Decking oil for hardwood

Updated: October 2026

The boards arrived this week, they still look like the sample in the showroom, and you want them oiled on Saturday. Decking oil for hardwood fails when it goes on too soon or sits on the surface. Bangkirai, ipe, iroko, teak, oak, and yellow balau hold oils and, in oak and chestnut, tannin. The wait depends on the species and on the tin, and the makers do not agree with each other. Brush technique and cloth safety stay on [how to apply decking oil](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/terrace-oil/sub/terrace-oil-how-to-apply). The three amazon.co.uk extracts remain on the [terrace oil comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/terrace-oil). Peter F. compiled the waits on 16 October 2026. Why new hardwood refuses oil

New tropical decking is full of extractives and, for a while, unwilling to take a finish. Oil that cannot get in pools in the grooves and stays tacky. Softwood waits will mis-time a bangkirai deck: about six weeks for larch and Douglas fir, about six months for fresh pressure-treated pine. Which tin matches the job is on best decking oil.

Bangkirai, ipe, and balau

Osmo UK says about 12 weeks for bangkirai, and at least 3 months for a tropical group that includes bangkirai. One species list puts ipe at 6–8 weeks. The weathering FAQ puts ipe at about 12 weeks. Take the longer Osmo line when those pages conflict. One UK review of Osmo 006 on yellow balau reported several applications a year. That is one deck, not a species rule.

Iroko, teak, and oak

Owatrol says iroko should weather about 12 months before Deks Olje D1. Osmo’s FAQ puts iroko at about 12 weeks. If the tin is Deks, Saturday is the wrong day for new iroko. Oak and chestnut can still bleed on Blanchon even when new wood is allowed. D1 is not for thermo-treated wood.

How much the first coat drinks

Osmo’s listing says up to 24 m² per litre with one coat. Deks lists 8–12 m² per litre, while the first saturation is about 1–4 m² per litre. A 1 litre tin at £41.79, at 2 m² per litre, covers a couple of square metres of bare ipe. Blanchon prints 62.5 m² per container and no coat count. The preservative limit is the decking oil buying guide.

Common questions

How long do I leave new bangkirai before oil?
Osmo UK says about 12 weeks for bangkirai, and the same page also says at least 3 months for a group of tropical species that includes bangkirai. Use the longer of those two Osmo lines if you are applying Osmo and the can does not give a tighter figure. Do not oil new bangkirai on the weekend it is laid. Moisture limits still apply after the wait: about 18 percent on one Osmo source and 20 percent on the UK product page. Do not merge them.
Is the wait for ipe the same as for bangkirai?
Not on every Osmo page. One species list puts ipe at 6–8 weeks, while the weathering FAQ puts ipe at about 12 weeks with teak and iroko. Bangkirai is about 12 weeks, or at least 3 months in the tropical group. Do not average the ipe numbers. If the pages disagree, wait the longer Osmo period before an Osmo oil, and do not import Owatrol’s 12-month iroko rule onto ipe unless you are using D1 and the D1 instructions say so. A review of D1 on an ipe deck is one user’s job, not a new official wait.
Can I oil new iroko this weekend?
Not with Deks Olje D1. Owatrol wants iroko weathered about 12 months, or properly prepared, before that saturator. Osmo’s FAQ puts iroko at about 12 weeks, which is a different product’s clock. Pick the clock that belongs to the tin. A weathered iroko gate finished with Osmo 006 in a UK review is not permission to coat fresh iroko boards on Saturday. New iroko is still full of the material that stops oil getting in.
Will oak bleed through decking oil?
It can. Blanchon warns that oak and chestnut can still bleed tannin even when new wood is allowed. Osmo treats about six months of weathering for oak as optional, if you want less tannin, not as the tropical-deck rule. Test a hidden board, especially on a matt medium-oak finish where a dark bleed will show. The Blanchon colour name “medium oak” is a shade, not evidence that the oil neutralises tannin. Chestnut deserves the same caution even though it is less common on UK decks.
How many litres do I need for the first coat on dense boards?
Price Deks from 1–4 m² per litre for the first saturation, not from the listing’s 8–12 m² per litre. At 2 m² per litre, 1 litre at £41.79 does not cover a terrace. Osmo’s listing figure is up to 24 m² per litre for one coat, and ribbed hardwood drinks more. Ignore a second-coat claim of about 72 m² per litre that is not on the Osmo UK page. Blanchon’s 62.5 m² is per 5 litre container, with no coat count on the extract. Buy the first coat from the thirstier number for the product you are actually using.
Is Osmo 006 only for bangkirai?
It is a Bangkirai satin colour, and Osmo UK calls it a popular colour for ipe and bangkirai. It is still a decking oil in that range, not a separate chemical reserved for one species. The listing aims it at decking, terraces, and outdoor furniture. You can choose it for the tint. You still weather the boards for the species, and you still treat the 24 m² per litre line as one coat on a receptive surface, not as a promise for fresh, ribbed tropical boards in week one.
Can I use Deks Olje on thermo-treated hardwood?
No. Owatrol says D1 is not for thermo-treated wood. A long weather in the garden does not put heat-treated boards back inside that instruction. Use a product whose maker names thermo-treated timber, or leave the boards unfinished until you have that instruction. Do not substitute Osmo’s 12-week tropical line either, unless the Osmo tin you buy states that use. The exclusion is a product limit, not a general ban on oiling every hardwood.
