Decking oil buying guide

Updated: October 2026

You have a garden deck that has gone grey, a dry weekend in the diary, and three bottles that all seem to say oil. This decking oil buying guide is the step before you choose a tin. It separates a penetrating decking oil, a terrace and cladding oil, and a clear saturator, and it stops short of ranking the three amazon.co.uk listings we kept. Those shelf prices, star lines, and coverage claims sit on the [terrace oil comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/terrace-oil). Peter F. assembled this page on 16 October 2026. We did not weather a deck in a lab. A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

A terrace oil in UK shops is a penetrating finish for exterior deck boards. Water should bead, and a tint can slow greying. A decking oil, the Osmo 006 tin, is two thin coats on bare boards and one coat when you refresh. Blanchon is aimed at decks, gates, cladding, screens, and fencing. Deks Olje D1 is driven in until the wood refuses more, then wiped. Stain is a different shelf. Read decking oil vs decking stain before you add one to the basket.

Timber before brand

Match the timber before you match the brand. Osmo’s notes put about six weeks on larch and Douglas fir, about three months on bangkirai, garapa, and massaranduba, and about six months on fresh pressure-treated pine. Moisture on that source is about 18 percent maximum. The Osmo UK product page states 20 percent. Do not average them. Hardwood waits are on decking oil for hardwood.

Tint, coverage, and the tin size

Osmo UK says a clear teak decking oil gives little UV protection, and a coloured decking oil slows greying. The tin in our set is 006, Bangkirai satin, not 007. Per litre, Deks is about £41.79, Osmo about £28.92, and Blanchon about £22.59. The largest tin is the lowest rate only if you will use it. Which tin fits is best decking oil.

What this oil will not do

A decorative oil is not an HSE product-type 8 wood preservative. The TDCA says deck timbers that carry the deck want industrial Use Class 4 treatment to BS 8417. You cannot oil the joists into a structural specification. NF EN 13036-4 on the Blanchon listing is not a UK pendulum test value, and the listing prints no number.

Common questions

Is terrace oil the same as decking oil?
In UK shops the words overlap, and they are not one product. Decking oil, in this set the Osmo 006 tin, is a tinted oil with two first coats and a 12-hour dry on the listing. Terrace oil, the Blanchon 5 litre tin, is aimed at decks and cladding as well as gates and screens. A saturating oil such as Deks Olje D1 is a third type: you feed dense hardwood until it stops drinking, then you wipe. Use the comparison table when you want the three extracts side by side, and use this page when you are still choosing the type.
Should I buy oil or stain?
Buy oil when the boards are sound and you will refresh a penetrating finish when wear shows. Buy a decking stain when you want a stronger colour and you will stay with that system. A film-forming finish on horizontal boards can crack and flake, which is why the TDCA prefers a penetrating finish on decks. That is not a measured lifespan for your garden. The versus page sets the condition, including what happens if an old stain is already on the wood.
Does the oil preserve the joists?
No. These oils are decorative coatings for the boards you can see. HSE product type 8 is a wood preservative, and a colour oil is not one unless an authorisation says so. The TDCA says the deck structure wants industrial Use Class 4 treatment to BS 8417. Brushing oil onto joists does not meet that. Use Class 3 describes boards that get wet above ground. If the frame has failed, call someone who can specify the timber treatment, not another tin of oil.
Should I buy clear or tinted decking oil?
Tinted, if you want to slow greying. Osmo UK says a coloured decking oil slows greying and that a clear teak decking oil gives little UV protection. The clear product 007 is described on an Osmo FAQ as offering no UV protection. The Osmo tin in our set is the tinted 006, not that clear oil. A clear saturator, including Deks Olje D1, will also move toward grey. A UV-resistant line on a listing is not a promise that new hardwood keeps its showroom colour.
Why is a 1 litre saturator a poor budget for a bare hardwood deck?
Because the thirsty coat is the first one. Deks Olje D1 is £41.79 for 1 litre, and the amazon.co.uk listing says 8–12 m² per litre. Owatrol’s own first-saturation figure is about 1–4 m² per litre. At 2 m² per litre, that tin covers a couple of square metres of bare dense board, not a terrace. The 8–12 m² rate is maintenance, after the wood is already full. Price the first coat from the low figure, then decide whether 1 litre is enough.
Is boiled linseed oil the cheap decking oil?
Not in this category. Rawlins says linseed’s exterior resistance is weaker than a modern exterior oil and does not recommend it on exposed wood. A separate timber-shop FAQ still treats boiled linseed as the ordinary deck treatment. Those sources disagree, so do not file linseed as a budget decking oil. It is also the cloth people mean when fire services warn about piled oily rags. If you use a drying oil, follow that tin’s safety data sheet rather than a generic bag instruction.
Which of the three tins is a decking oil?
Only the Osmo 006 listing is named as a decking oil, in Bangkirai satin, at £72.31 for 2.5 litres, with 4.7 from 19 ratings. Blanchon is a terrace and cladding oil in a 5 litre tin, with no star line in the extract. Deks Olje D1 is a clear saturating oil at £41.79 for 1 litre, with 4.6 from 216 ratings, and the extract stresses furniture, parquet, and a boat hull. The UK brand page does list timber decking for Deks. This amazon.co.uk extract does not name terrace boards. Pick the type on this page, then open the comparison for the field-by-field table.
