How to use a cross line laser

Updated: October 2026

A shelf that looked level in your hand is out once the bracket is fixed, because the spirit level moved with you. A cross line laser keeps the reference on the wall. The sequence is the same on a £19 cube and on a Bosch: set it nearly level, unlock, wait for a steady line, mark the centre of the beam, and lock the pendulum before the bag. Model choice is the [cross line laser comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/cross-line-laser). Peter F. used these listings and UK how-to sources on 16 October 2026, not a lab. Put it somewhere nearly level

Self-levelling corrects a small tilt. It does not turn a wonky pile of books into a datum. Most listings in this set state a window of about ±4 degrees. The Huepar 703CG states 3.5 degrees, and the SAVSEC states ±3 degrees. Outside that window the beam should flash or blink. DOVOH, Nikotek, Lusweimi, and RockSeed all describe that flash. A flashing line means move the base. Set the tool on the floor, on a tripod, or on a bracket that is itself steady. If the floor slopes more than the window, shift the tripod legs or choose a flatter patch. You cannot silence a genuine out-of-level warning by locking the pendulum. Manual mode is for a stair rail or a deliberate slope you intend to follow. The line it throws is the angle you locked, and it is not level.

Unlock, wait, then mark the centre

Leave the pendulum locked while you carry the tool. Unlock it only when the base is in place. On the Huepar cross with the 100 cm tripod, a UK review says the switch needs two clicks. One click looks like a dead tool. The GLL 2-10 states self-levelling in under four seconds. Mark only a line that has stopped flashing. Mark the centre of the beam, not the bright edge. A thick line can be a few millimetres deep, so use the same point all day. Do not stare into the beam while you hunt for it. GOV.UK treats a Class 2 glance as something you look away from. Recheck the height after every move.

Get the line to the height you need

The line is only useful at the height of the mark. A 66 cm tripod, included with one Nikotek, will not reach a ceiling line or a high picture rail. Reviews call that stand short and wobbly. The Huepar kit’s 100 cm tripod is taller and is still called flimsy. The Lusweimi states 127 cm. If the bundled stand flexes when you touch it, move the cube to a camera tripod. Several listings state a 1/4 inch thread for that. If the tool cannot reach, mark a parallel line lower down and measure up from the ticks with a tape. Do not tilt the head past the self-levelling window and then treat the flashing line as level. Wall tile courses, which use this same horizontal line as the first full row, are on the laser level for tiling page.

Lock it and recheck after a knock

Before the tool goes in the bag, lock the pendulum. Travel with it unlocked is how the compensator gets damaged. If you forget to unlock it on site, the line looks steady and it is not level. Glance at the switch before you mark a whole wall. The lock itself is covered on lock a laser level pendulum. If you knock the tripod while adhesive or brackets are going on, set up again. Put a spirit level on a mark the laser just made. If they disagree by more than a pencil line, stop. A beam that will not settle is no longer a reference. That is the point to get a professional, along with structural marks, a missing class label on a very bright beam, or any label that reads Class 3B or Class 4. Outdoor level over tens of metres is a rotary and a detector.

Common questions

Why does the line flash?
The base is outside the self-levelling window, usually about ±4 degrees in this set, 3.5 degrees on the Huepar 703CG, and ±3 degrees on the SAVSEC. Shift the stand until the line is steady. A flash is a refusal, not a dim level line you can still mark.
Can I tilt the head to reach a stair rail?
Only in manual mode, with the pendulum locked on purpose, and only if you want that slope. The line is then not level. Do not lock the pendulum merely to stop a flash on a floor that is too far out of the window.
How high should the tripod be?
High enough for the mark, and stiff enough that a touch does not move the line. A 66 cm stand fails for ceilings. A 100 cm stand can still be too flexible. Use a camera tripod on the 1/4 inch thread if the included legs wobble.
Do I mark the top of the line or the middle?
Mark the centre, and use that same point all day. A thick beam can put the top and the bottom several millimetres apart. Mixing edges between two setups is enough to show a step in a row of tiles or shelves.
What do I do before it goes in the bag?
Lock the pendulum, then pack it. The lock is the transport lock as well as the slope lock. An unlocked pendulum in a bag is a common way to knock the compensator out of agreement with a spirit level later.
How do I know a drop has shifted it?
Mark a line, then lay a spirit level along that mark. If they disagree by more than the thickness of the pencil line, stop using the laser as a reference. Recheck after any knock while you are fixing or spreading adhesive.
