Laser level pendulum lock: pack it, then unlock

The laser level pendulum lock is for the bag and for a slope you set on purpose. Unlock it before a level mark, because a locked line follows the case.

Halfway to the van the housing clicks. That click is the pendulum, free to swing, meeting its stop every time the bag turns a corner. A laser level pendulum lock is the clamp that stops that travel, and it is the same clamp that holds the beam at an angle when you ask it to. Leave it locked while you mark a shelf and the line can look perfectly calm while it follows the case.

Nine of the twelve amazon.co.uk listings in our cross-line laser comparison print a manual lock. DOVOH, Nikotek, Huepar, RockSeed, Lusweimi, and SAVSEC are in that group. The Bosch Professional GLL 2-10 does not state one. A locked line follows the housing. Grettz puts the daily rule in one sentence: unlock only when you want self-levelling. Homebuilding puts the other limit next to it. The tool has to sit near level, or the line flashes.

Prices, star lines, and lock wording are the amazon.co.uk details stored for that comparison, plus the maker and safety pages named in the research. We did not run a lab test, and we did not measure how many miles of unlocked travel move a stated accuracy. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

In short

Lock the pendulum before the tool goes in a bag, and unlock it before you mark anything that has to be level. Manual mode is that same clamp, used on purpose for a slope, so a steady locked line is the angle of the case. If the listing never mentions a lock, do not invent one, and do not assume the pendulum is parked for the journey.

Two jobs of the same switch

The switch does two jobs with one mechanism. Open, the pendulum hangs and finds level inside a small window: about ±4 degrees on most of these listings, 3.5 degrees on the Huepar 703CG, and ±3 degrees on the SAVSEC SV-Y04CG. Past that window the line should flash. Locked, the same pendulum is clamped and the beam follows the housing. That is the slope you asked for, and it is the parked weight you want in a bag so it is not meeting its stops on every corner.

DeWalt's published manual for the DW08802 gives both jobs to one control. The transport lock protects the pendulum and selects manual mode. DOVOH, Nikotek, Huepar, RockSeed, Lusweimi, and SAVSEC use the same idea when the icon is a padlock, a pendulum, or the word Manual. There is no shared direction. With the tool off, tilt the housing. An unlocked pendulum often rattles. A locked one stays quiet. That rattle is the laser level rattle in the case, and it is the clue that you packed the tool free.

Quiet means the weight is clamped, or that you cannot hear it. It does not mean the beam is level. One degree of case tilt is about 17 mm of rise over a metre, from the tangent of 1 degree. That is geometry, a rule of thumb for the mark, and it is not a second accuracy figure from the listing. A tripod head that looks roughly square can still hand you that slope while the pendulum is locked. The how to use page is the sequence: unlock, settle, mark, lock. This page is why the first step and the last step are the same control.

Pack the laser with the pendulum locked

  1. Move the switch to locked or manual before you lift the tool off the head.
  2. Power it off so a slider cannot wake the beam inside the bag.
  3. Tilt the housing. Silence means the clamp is holding. A click means the pendulum is still free.
  4. Use the pouch or case that came with it, and keep bits and a hammer off the window.
  5. At the next job, unlock and wait for a steady line before you transfer a height.

A canvas bag does not clamp the pendulum. On the Nikotek 66 cm kit at £29.99, one UK household thought the green cross was faulty until support explained the lock.

Weight makes the knock worse. The Huepar 703CG is about 1.95 kg and the SAVSEC kit about 2.57 kg. A kerb or a van step can slap a free pendulum into its stop. We have no lab figure for how far that moves a stated ±0.3 mm/m. After an unlocked journey, compare a short run with a spirit level before a finished edge. If they disagree, stop.

Use manual mode only for a slope you set

A domestic stair is many times steeper than ±4 degrees. Four degrees is about 70 mm of rise over a metre. Stand an unlocked cross on a stringer and the line should flash. Manual mode throws a line along a pitch you have already set with a board, a measured rise and going, or an angle finder. The lock does not know the going. It repeats the angle of the housing. Check the first mark with a tape before you cut a string or fix a handrail.

A shallow fall is easier to miss. A slope you can still stand on may sit inside the window. Unlock the pendulum and the beam goes to gravity, which is the right line for a shelf and the wrong line if you meant to draw the fall itself. The buying guide puts the lock in a buying order. Here it is a habit, and a slope the laser did not measure is still your measurement.

Which listings state a lock

Nine listings print a manual lock. They are the Nikotek cube at £18.69 and the Nikotek 66 cm kit at £29.99, the red RockSeed LV1 at £22.99 and the green LV1GT at £29.99, the Lusweimi 127 cm kit at £34.99, the DOVOH C2-120G at £49.99, the Huepar cross with the 100 cm tripod at £55.99, the SAVSEC SV-Y04CG at £75.99, and the Huepar 703CG at £144.32. Those are the amazon.co.uk shelf prices stored for the comparison, and they move.

Three Bosch rows need a slower reading. The GLL 2-10 at £89.95 states ±0.3 mm/m, up to 10 m, IP54, and self-levelling within ±4 degrees in under four seconds. A pendulum lock is not in the fields we used. The top pick, the GCL 2-15 at £119.99, states Class 2, ±0.3 mm/m, two centred plumb points, and 4.6 from 7,977 ratings. Its lock field is that reviews describe a fixed mode. The English bullets do not print a transport lock the way the cubes do, so confirm the control on the tool before you assume the bag routine. The GLL 20-22 G at £154.00 has a spec table that says Manual, with ±0.3 mm and no "per metre," and no self-levelling window in the English bullets.

When the switch is missing or the tool arrives crooked

If you own the GLL 2-10, pack the housing you actually have. The box is the laser, three AA cells, and a pouch, at about 410 g. Power off, pouch on, and keep it out of a loose drawer of bits. The listing does not say that switching off clamps the pendulum.

A new tool that will not level is often the switch. Find the lock before you open a return. The Nikotek household had a working pendulum and a locked one. Huepar reviews add a second click. If the lock is off and the line flashes, move the support into the window. If the lock is off, the line is steady, and a short spirit level disagrees, suspect a knock in the carrier. Fresh cells, or a full charge on a USB-C pack, come before you blame the diode.

Keep your eyes out of the aperture while you check. GOV.UK's laser guidance, citing BS EN 60825-1, treats Class 2 as visible light with a low risk for a brief glance because you look away, and it is not a beam to stare into. The GLL 2-10 and the DOVOH do not state a class in the fields we used, and a printed Class 2 label is not a measurement we made. Kit glasses are not certified protective eyewear. Point the window at the wall. Lock what can be locked before the bag, unlock before a level mark, and stop if a spirit level and the beam disagree on a short run.

Common questions

Which way is the laser level pendulum lock?
These listings do not share one direction. DOVOH, Nikotek, Huepar, RockSeed, Lusweimi, and SAVSEC state a manual lock, and the icon may be a padlock, a pendulum, or the word Manual. With the tool off, tilt the housing. An unlocked pendulum often rattles. A locked one stays quiet. DeWalt's published manual for the DW08802 treats that same control as transport protection and as manual mode. Read the mark on your switch before you copy a left or right habit from another brand.
Will manual mode draw a level line?
Manual mode clamps the pendulum, so the beam follows the housing. A steady line in that mode is the angle of the case, including any tilt in the tripod head. Level comes from the unlocked pendulum, inside the stated window, usually about ±4 degrees. If the base is too steep, the line should flash. Locking the switch to stop a flash leaves a bright line at the housing's angle. Unlock the pendulum, let it settle, and then mark.
Can I use manual mode for stairs?
You can use manual mode to throw a line along a stair pitch you have already set. A domestic stair is many times steeper than a ±4 degree self-levelling window, so an unlocked tool on that slope should flash. The lock does not know the going or the rise. Set the pitch with a board, a measured rise and going, or an angle finder, clamp the pendulum, and use the beam as a repeatable line. Check the first mark with a tape before you cut.
Can travel without the lock shift accuracy?
The lock is there so the pendulum is not swinging while the bag moves. We have no lab figure for how far an unlocked trip moves a stated accuracy such as ±0.3 mm/m. A free weight can hit its stops. After a journey with the pendulum unlocked, compare a short run with a spirit level before you mark a finished edge. If they disagree, stop. A tool that no longer matches after a knock is a reason to pause the job.
What if there is no lock switch?
The Bosch Professional GLL 2-10 at £89.95 states self-levelling within ±4 degrees and ±0.3 mm/m, and the fields we used do not state a pendulum lock. Do not assume a transport clamp is part of that model. You also cannot select a slope mode the listing never describes. Carry it in the pouch so the housing is not loose among other tools. Where a spec table only says Manual, as on the GLL 20-22 G, confirm the control on the tool before you treat it as a travel lock.
Why did the laser arrive and refuse to level?
Start with the switch. One household with the Nikotek 66 cm kit thought the tool was faulty until support explained the pendulum lock. Huepar tripod-kit reviews describe a switch that needs a second click. If the lock is off and the line flashes, the base is outside the window. If the lock is off, the line is steady, and a spirit level disagrees, the pendulum may have taken a knock in transit. Fit fresh cells before you open a return. Do not stare into the aperture while you test it.
Should I lock the pendulum in the bag?
Lock it when the model has a lock. That is the travel job of the switch. A canvas bag does not clamp the pendulum for you. The Huepar 703CG is listed at about 1.95 kg and the SAVSEC kit at about 2.57 kg, so a kerb or a van step is a real knock if the weight is free. Lock it and power it off. On the way out of the bag, unlock the pendulum before the first level mark, including a picture rail that only takes ten minutes.
