Laser level for tiling

Updated: October 2026

A tile course that starts true in a British bathroom drifts by the window when each spacer takes a different squeeze. A laser level for tiling holds the line while your hands are on the tile. A single cross is enough for one wall. A floor that must stay square around the room is a different setup. The listings are the [cross line laser comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/cross-line-laser). Peter F. used those amazon.co.uk pages and UK tiling notes on 16 October 2026, and did not lay a floor. A wall course needs one steady horizontal line

On a wall, set the horizontal line at the top of the first full row of tiles, not at the skirting. BuildWiz describes that row as often one tile up from the floor, so the cut tiles sit at the bottom where the floor is rarely flat. Measure the storey, find the high point of the floor if the room dips, and place the line so the lowest cut is still a piece you can fix, not a sliver. Add a vertical line at the first column you are happy to show. You still use spacers. The laser does not set the joint width, and it does not stop a tile from slipping in wet adhesive. UK reviews mention tiling with the Bosch GCL 2-15, the DOVOH, and a Huepar cross. Switch-on steps are on how to use a cross line laser.

A floor needs square, not only level

A floor layout fails when the grout lines are level and still not square to the room. Dry-lay from the centre and shift the start so you do not finish under half a tile. A 3-4-5 check is ordinary geometry: 300 mm and 400 mm on the arms, 500 mm on the diagonal. A single cross throws a fan at the wall in front of it, and that fan is a weak square once you walk around a corner. That is where a 360 degree vertical pair starts to earn the money. In this set the Huepar 703CG states three 360 degree planes at £144.32, and the SAVSEC states four at £75.99. Laser Level Shop’s tiler range starts from about £120 including VAT for tools with a floor line close to the ground.

Gloss, sun, and a knocked tool

Gloss and a bright window hide a red line first, and they can hide green as well. UK reviews of the red GCL 2-15 say strong light leaves no practical distance. Pulse mode on the DOVOH and the SAVSEC needs a receiver that is not in either box. Kit glasses are not certified eyewear. Seeing the line when the room is bright is the separate note on seeing a laser level in daylight. If you knock the tripod while you are spreading adhesive, the line moves and the course follows it. Set up again, and check a mark you already trust.

When to stop using a cross

Stay with a single cross for a splashback, a hearth, or one bathroom wall. Step up when the floor has to stay square past more than one corner, or when you need a 45 degree line for tiles laid on the diamond. The Bosch GTL 3, sold as a floor and wall tile laser, can add that 45 degree line and states ±0.2 mm/m. It is not in this comparison. A cross from this set does not become a tile laser because the listing says DIY. Stop and get a tiler if the substrate is out of flat by more than your adhesive bed can take, if the tool no longer agrees with a spirit level after a drop, or if the dry-lay already shows slivers on two walls.

Common questions

Can I tile a splashback with a £20 cross?
Yes, if the line is steady, you can see it, and the splashback is one wall. The Nikotek at £18.69 is that sort of cube. It has no printed accuracy and no tripod. Check the first course with a spirit level, and do not expect the same cube to square a whole floor.
Where should the horizontal line sit?
At the top of the first full row, often one tile up from the floor so the cuts absorb the dips. BuildWiz describes that practice. Your tile height and the high point of the floor decide the actual millimetres. The line is a reference, not a substitute for spacers.
Do I need a 360 degree laser for a bathroom floor?
You need one if the grout must stay square around the room from a single setup. A cross on one wall will not do that walk. The Huepar 703CG and the SAVSEC are the 360 degree options in this set. A small floor you can see in one view can still be set out with a cross and a 3-4-5 check.
Will the line show on glossy tiles?
Sometimes poorly. Gloss and a bright window hide red first, and they can hide green as well. Move the light, or mark ticks and work from the ticks, rather than assuming a green diode wins on every tile. Sun outside is a receiver problem, not a colour problem.
What if the line flashes because the floor slopes?
The base is outside the self-levelling window, about ±4 degrees on most of these listings. Pack the tripod or move it until the line is steady. Locking the pendulum to stop the flash gives you a slope, not a level course.
When is a dedicated tile laser the point?
When you need a line close to the floor, or a 45 degree line, and a cross plus a tape keeps producing slivers. Trade tile lasers, including a Bosch GTL 3 with a stated ±0.2 mm/m, sit outside this set and often from about £120. A cross remains the right tool for one wall.
