BGS torque wrench which size fits the handbook figure

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are matching a handbook figure to one click wrench, and amazon.co.uk is showing a dozen BGS tools under one name. The marked scales run from 2 N·m to 980 N·m. A 5–25 N·m wrench will not tighten a car wheel, and a wrench that starts at 140 N·m will not release at 120 N·m. BGS torque wrench which size is that range question. Drive and direction come after the number sits inside the marks. The twelve listings stay on the [BGS torque wrench comparison](/hub/hand-tools/bgs-torque-wrench). Start from the number, not the drive

The handbook figure has to sit inside the printed scale. A 5 N·m bolt is outside a wrench that starts at 6 N·m, and a 120 N·m nut never meets the click on a scale that ends at 110 N·m. Tyre guidance is only a cross-check. Barum calls about 110–120 N·m common for a car and still sends you to the vehicle manual. Four low tools stop well short of a wheel. The 7181 is 6–30 N·m at £15.98, the 2825 is 5–25 N·m at £23.17, and the 960 is the same 5–25 N·m span at £28.55. The BGS DIY torque wrench 987 is 2–24 N·m at £28.60. Compared with the 7181, the 987 starts lower and costs more, though a UK review says that sample never clicked. Car scales are the BGS 40–220 N·m model 2827 at £54.98 and the BGS 60–330 N·m model 2829 at £50.15. A 110 N·m nut sits in both, and a 50 N·m plug sits only on the 2827, because the 2829 opens at 60 N·m. The 2806 covers 60–340 N·m at £106.76, about twice the 2829, without a lower start. The 2843 stops at 105 N·m (£37.35), the 9576 runs 140–980 N·m (£166.48), and the 7532 is a 10–50 N·m insert set at £131.59.

Drive size and the adaptor trap

Torque wrench drive size matters only after that square’s scale contains your figure. A 1/4 torque wrench here is the 6.3 mm square on the 7181, the 2825, the 960, and the 987. The 3/8 inch tools are the 2841 (5–25 N·m, £38.74), the 2843 (7–105 N·m), and the 961 (20–110 N·m, £24.44). Half-inch is the wheel square on the 2827, the 2829, and the 2806, and the 9576 is the 3/4 inch tool from 140 N·m up. The 961’s 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch adaptor lets a half-inch socket fit, and the scale stays 20–110 N·m. A handbook figure of 140 N·m needs a range that already includes 140, such as the 2827 up to 220 N·m, though that wrench still starts at 40 N·m.

Direction and the stated percentage

Most of these listings describe a clockwise click, which suits ordinary wheel nuts. A left-hand thread needs the opposite release. The 7181, 2825, 2827, 2829, 2841, 2843, and 9576 are described as clockwise or right-hand only. The 2806 states both directions, at 60–340 N·m and £106.76. Compared with the 2829 at £50.15, you pay for that second direction, not for a scale that opens below 60 N·m. A reversible ratchet turns the square and does not add a second click. Model notes are on the BGS torque wrench clockwise only page. The 2827 and the 2829 state ±3%, and the 961 and the 2806 state ±4%. A tighter bullet is not a UKAS certificate, and the £50 clockwise pick on the best BGS torque wrench page is the wrong one if you need the left-hand release.

What to ignore on the listing

Ignore attribute cells that fight the title. The 2829 weight field says 40 g, which is not a 60–330 N·m half-inch wrench. The 987 shows 13 N·m in the item-torque field against a 2–24 N·m title, so 13 is a stray number inside the span. Read the newton-metre span in the title, and the scale photo if one is shown. Stars are shopper scores, not a measure of how far the click sits from the set value. A 4.8 rating sits on a clockwise wrench near £50 and on the 2806 at £106.76. Origin lines on these amazon.co.uk listings say China or Taiwan. BGS technic KG’s company address is in Germany. Price comes after the range and the direction already fit. A higher band without a higher handbook figure adds reach you will not use.

Common questions

Can one wrench do bike bolts and wheel nuts?
One wrench in this set will not do both jobs. The low tools stop at 24–30 N·m, which can cover many bike bolts and stops short of a car wheel. The 2827 starts at 40 N·m and the 2829 at 60 N·m, so both miss a 6 N·m stem bolt. If you work on a bike and a car, plan on two ranges. The 961 adaptor changes the socket and leaves the 110 N·m ceiling where it is.
What is the difference between BGS and BGS Do it yourself?
In this set, BGS Do it yourself is the line name on the 987 and the 9576, not a second accuracy standard. The 987 is a 1/4 inch wrench at 2–24 N·m for £28.60. The 9576 is a 3/4 inch wrench at 140–980 N·m for £166.48, described as clockwise only. The other listings use BGS model numbers without that DIY line. Compare the marked range and the click direction before you treat the DIY line as a reason to pay more or less.
Is ±3% better than ±4% on the listing?
On the listing, ±3% is a tighter claim than ±4%. BS EN ISO 6789-1:2017 allows up to ±4% when the wrench maximum is above 10 N·m, and up to ±6% at 10 N·m or below, unless the maker claims a tighter figure. The 2827 and the 2829 state ±3%. The 961 and the 2806 state ±4%. Either bullet is a manufacturer claim, not a UKAS certificate, and a drop or an overload puts that old percentage in doubt.
Is 1/2 inch the one to buy first for a car?
Choose 1/2 inch first when the handbook figure sits between 40 N·m and 220 N·m, which covers many wheel nuts. In this set that is the 2827 at 40–220 N·m (£54.98), or the 2829 at 60–330 N·m (£50.15) if you never set a fastener below 60 N·m. A half-inch square does not help with 10 N·m trim bolts. For those, use a 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch scale that includes 10 N·m.
