Keter shed vs wooden shed

Updated: 22 October 2026

You like the wood-effect panels, and you do not want a weekend each spring with preservative. A Keter shed vs wooden shed decision is less rot treatment on the resin, and less freedom to screw or lock the shell the way timber allows. This page stays on the material. Prices from £137.99 to £639.29 on 19 October 2026 stay on the [Keter garden shed comparison](/hub/garden-supplies/keter-garden-shed). We did not run a lifespan test. Paint and rot

Which? describes wood as a shed you treat through the year and can repair, and plastic as light and low on maintenance, while being harder to customise and harder to secure. Keter’s own page argues that resin does not rot and that a wash with mild detergent is the care. That is a manufacturer argument, and this set was not priced against a timber sample. You do not paint a Keter shed to protect it from rot. Keep acetone and harsh solvents off the panels. On the Manor Pent listing the material field says wood, while the bullets describe polypropylene, so a wood filter can still be a resin shell.

Shelves and weight on the walls

Keter manuals tell you not to lean heavy items on the walls. The panels are a skin, and a load that would sit on a timber stud has nowhere honest to go. Reviews of the 4 × 6, filed from Italy and France rather than from a British winter, say you cannot fix things to the panels, and they describe a hollow floor. Those notes are not UK weather evidence, and they do match the manual’s warning. A 15 kg tool rail, a bike hook or a small vice belongs on a freestanding rack, or on a bench that stands on the floor. The Store-It-Out Nova does not include shelves, and optional shelves are not a licence to drill the box. If your plan is a workbench bolted through the wall, timber accepts those fixings. A hole in a resin panel is a leak you cannot easily make good.

Locks, flex and condensation

A hasp is a place for a lock. None of these listings puts a padlock in the carton, so the lock is a condition you add. A Manor Pent reviewer found the latch screws reachable from outside. Which? calls plastic sheds hard to secure. A UK security guide rates plastic low to medium because the panels flex. A wall you can spring by leaning on it gives movement that a framed timber door often does not. Check your home insurance before you store a bike or anything you would mind losing. The policy, not the hasp, decides whether a resin shed is an acceptable outbuilding. Listings claim vents, and there is no lab figure for how dry the air stays. Resin does not soak up moisture the way bare timber can, so droplets stay on the surface.

When wood, and when this resin

Choose Keter resin when you will not treat timber every year, and when bins, a mower and ordinary tools are enough for a hasp and a padlock you fit yourself. Choose wood when you need to fix into the walls, repair a panel with a new board, or store things a flexing hasp cannot reasonably protect. That is not a claim that resin lasts longer or costs less. If the decision is already resin, the centimetres, the lock and the review counts are in the Keter garden shed buying guide. Who should skip which listing is on best Keter garden shed. Where the shell sits, and the height that includes the base, is on Keter shed base and planning.

Common questions

Do I have to paint a Keter shed?
No preservative coat is required to stop rot. Wash with mild detergent, keep acetone off the panels, and look for cracks. Wood-effect colour is moulded in. A wooden shed in the same garden still wants a yearly treatment if you want the boards to last.
Will a wooden shed last longer than a Keter shed?
Nobody in these sources gives a year count you can quote for either material. Treated timber can be repaired board by board, and resin skips that rot cycle and can still crack or flex. Keter’s no-rot line is the manufacturer’s claim, not a lifespan test.
Can you screw shelves into a Keter shed wall?
The manuals say not to lean heavy weight on the walls, and 4 × 6 buyer notes say the panels are not there to fix into. Use a freestanding rack. If the workshop needs a bench bolted to the wall, timber takes those screws.
Which is more secure, plastic or wood?
Plastic is the harder shell to secure, in Which?’s buying guide, because panels flex. These listings give you a hasp, and you supply the padlock. A Pent reviewer could reach latch screws from outside. Check what your insurance will cover in an outbuilding.
Do plastic sheds get condensation?
Vents are claimed on listings, and there is no laboratory figure for humidity inside these models. Resin does not absorb water the way untreated timber can, so moisture beads on the walls. Lift stored kit off the floor and keep the vent clear.
Is a resin shed cheaper than timber?
Not as a rule. The amazon.co.uk Keter set checked on 19 October 2026 runs from £137.99 to £639.29, and those are resin prices only. They do not tell you what a timber shed costs this month. Compare a named timber building with a named Keter body.
