Shepherd's crook garden hook hanging basket: stay upright

A shepherd's crook garden hook leans once the hanging basket is watered. Seat the foot in firm soil, follow the packet load, then water and watch the pole.
On this page

The shepherd's crook looks straight when you hang the liner. By evening, after a full watering, the garden hook has a lean and the basket sits closer to the lawn than to the rose. Watering makes the basket heavier than the dry liner you carried out, and a stake only half seated in soft soil has started to walk. A shepherd's crook garden hook hanging basket stays upright when the foot is fully in firm ground and the wet load is still inside the figure printed on that hook.
This is the failure people meet in a British border, where a dry week and a soaking can arrive in the same fortnight. Products Compared used the amazon.co.uk listings in our shepherd's crook comparison and the Royal Horticultural Society note that container compost gets heavy when wet. Prices below are as those listings showed in October 2026. We did not hang baskets on a test rig. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.
In short
The shepherd hook leaning in the border is usually a wet basket on a foot that was never fully buried. Read the load on your own packet, hang the basket, then water it and watch the pole for several minutes. If the listing only promises lightweight baskets, hang a lightweight basket. A shepherd crook in a pot needs a heavy pot, or the pot is what falls.
The lean starts before the basket looks heavy
A hanging basket looks the same size after you water it. The garden stake basket weight does not. Dry compost in a coir liner is a fraction of that compost once the pores are full. The Royal Horticultural Society makes the point for containers: wet compost is heavy. A basket on a hook is that material on a lever. You notice the change when you lift the basket down.
The Hanging Basket Company, a UK seller, says a planted, watered 30 cm basket can be about 5–7 kg, and a 40 cm basket can pass 10 kg. Treat that as their bracket guidance, not as the rating on your hook. In our shepherd's crook comparison, YOUNTHYE states 2 kg on a short eight-pack and CHERISHOME states up to 5 kg. A basket in the photograph is not a load. If the bullet has no number, you cannot check the wet liner, so choose a lighter job or another fixing.
The lean often starts at the first real watering, while the basket still looks ordinary. The weight is then off to one side, and each hour of sag adds turning force on the prongs. Pushing the pole upright by hand reuses the same soft hole. Two planted baskets on one double hook are two wet loads, and an uneven pair twists the pole as well as leaning it.
Firm ground and a vertical pole
Match the foot to the soil you have this week. A lawn that cut cleanly in May can be a sponge in October. If the prongs fold, or the stake skates while you stand on the foot, stop. The Health and Safety Executive's plain point applies in a small way: do not keep lifting or pushing more than you can manage when the ground is poor.
Depth is the length of that hook's own foot, fully seated, not a centimetre copied from another brand. Crocus lists one steel crook at 185 cm above ground and 29 cm below, for feeders and lightweight lamps, at £18.99. That 29 cm is their insertion. The CHERISHOME station includes a 16 cm base in its stated height. Halfway in gives you half the anchor and the full pole as a lever.
Sight the pole against a fence post before you hang the basket. Seat every threaded joint. One amazon.co.uk buyer rejected the CHERISHOME station because the sections did not lock. Do not hammer a thin foot. Press with your foot only where that listing says to. Our install notes for a shepherd's crook stay with assembly and a fully seated foot. Keep the hook out of soil you have just dug, and off paving, which will not hold a prong.
Water the basket while you watch
Test on the day you plant, not after a week of hoping. Hang the basket while the compost is still damp from potting, stand where you can see the foot, and water until the liner runs. Stay for several minutes. A crook that shifts in that window will be worse when the liner is sodden tomorrow.
The pole should stay in line with itself. The foot should not rise on the side opposite the basket. The basket should not slide down the crook. Take it off if any of those happen. Look again the next morning. A few degrees of lean are easy to miss until the foliage brushes the plants underneath. If the hook pulls out of the lawn, that hole is finished. Seat the foot in a new spot.
Wind is the second load once the foliage fills in. The CHERISHOME pack weighs 1.44 kg, and the bullet describes 19 mm hollow steel, so the full-height station is still a light tube. One comment about a violent wind is not a wind rating. Drop a section if the border is exposed. BATA lists a Tom Chambers shepherd crook at £19.99 excluding VAT, click and collect only, for lightweight baskets. That is a trade price, not an amazon.co.uk shelf price. A soaked coir basket is outside that wording.
What the UK listing actually promises
The CHERISHOME feeder station is the top pick in our comparison because it prints a load of up to 5 kg. On amazon.co.uk it was £21.99, with 4.4 from 46 ratings. Heights run to 196 cm including the base, with one hook, three extension poles and a five-claw foot. Feeders are sold separately, and the arms face the same way. A soaked basket at the full 196 cm is outside what that 5 kg line can be asked to prove.
The YOUNTHYE eight-pack states 2 kg each, at 60 cm or 90 cm, £22.99, with 4.4 from 28 ratings. That load matches a solar lantern, and it sits below a watered basket. APACALI's similar pack prints no kilogram figure, and one UK note said a small basket was already too much. The buying guide puts the job, the stated load, the height and the foot ahead of the model name.
Powder coat is not a rust-proof finish. Buyers of a SEGNAYEN station in this set report rust at the joints within days of rain. If the collar is already orange, leave the basket off. A dimension of a few centimetres is often the parcel, not the standing height. If the hook arrives bent, stripped or misdescribed, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 usually gives 30 days to reject it for a refund from the seller. Citizens Advice is on 0345 404 0506.
A pot on the patio, and the winter lift
A shepherd crook in a pot works when the pot is the anchor. A light plastic container becomes a lever: the basket pulls, the pot tips, and the water is on the slabs. Bury the prongs to their full length in compost or gravel kept for the hook, in a pot obviously heavier than the wet basket. This is a practical warning, not a measured force. Keep the spikes out of the shrub you care about. Our notes on whether a stake can take a watered basket stay with that load. When the pot walks, use a wall bracket.
Lift the hook when it leans, when the border will stay soft, or when a bare pole would stand over the path. Store the sections dry so the joints are not lying in wet grass. There is no date for every British garden. A vertical crook with a firm foot can stay out. Do not hang a winter basket the packet never covered. Concrete in the lawn leaves a stump you cannot lift, and it does not raise the printed load. If the soil will not hold a spike, or a mains festoon is part of the plan, stop. The hook is not an electrical product.
