Shepherd's hook buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have three amazon.co.uk photographs open, and each one is called a shepherd's hook. One is a short multipack for lights, one is a hollow station near 2 metres for feeders, and one shows a planted basket the listing never weighs. This shepherd's hook buying guide is the order we use before naming a fit: the job, the printed kilogram, the height in the border, the foot and the joints, then the coating. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf figures from 20 October 2026. We did not run a load test, and the sources we used cite no British Standard for crook capacity. The six listings are in the [shepherd's crook comparison](/hub/garden-decor/shepherd-s-crook).

Start with the job, not the photo

A light string, a seed feeder and a watered basket are three purchases, even when one title lists all three. Lights are a small, dry load you can shorten. Feeders want a station you can lift down for a weekly clean. A basket gains weight every time you water it, and the photograph was taken before that drink. The packs and stations here sit around £15–£25. A Woodside page states 8 kg at £7.99. That is a shop claim, not one of these six. Named fits are on the best shepherd's hook page.

Read the stated load, or accept that there is none

Only YOUNTHYE (2 kg on each hook, £22.99) and CHERISHOME (up to 5 kg, £21.99) print a kilogram. APACALI, NUERPO, SEGNAYEN and Abaodam print none. An empty cell is a photograph, not a capacity. Heavy duty is a phrase. CHERISHOME's 19 mm line is hollow steel at 1.44 kg. Watered basket weight is on the shepherd's hook for a hanging basket page.

Use the height you will actually stand in the border

Short multipacks here are 60 cm or 90 cm. YOUNTHYE gives both by adding or leaving out sections. APACALI's title is 90 cm. CHERISHOME lists 196, 158, 119 or 81 cm, including a 16 cm base. SEGNAYEN lists the same idea up to 194 cm. NUERPO's title goes up to 230 cm. Abaodam is 30 cm, a label stake. A 90 cm hook cannot sit well above a cat. Leave out sections you will not use. A 10 mm details cell is a parcel or a data error, not the hook.

Count the prongs, then look at the joints

Five prongs are a footprint, not a strength grade. CHERISHOME, SEGNAYEN and NUERPO use a five-prong or five-claw base. YOUNTHYE uses two prongs. NUERPO's UK texts still describe thin poles, a weld that broke as a spike went in, and two small baskets that buckled a set. Joints matter more once the hook is sectional. One YOUNTHYE buyer lost the thread piece, and SEGNAYEN's joints keep turning. A one-piece solid rod avoids those joints, and it is not in this table. Where you stop pushing is on the how to install a shepherd's hook page.

Powder coat is a wording, not a promise

CHERISHOME and YOUNTHYE say powder coat. APACALI says painted. SEGNAYEN says a matte black coating that prevents rust. Two UK reviews report orange rust at welds or under joints within three days of rain and within two weeks. Powder coat is a finish name, not a guarantee. Lights with a printed 2 kg go to the eight-pack that says so. A feeder with a printed 5 kg goes to the station that says so, with the lock complaint noted. A basket waits until a printed load still covers the watered weight.

Common questions

What height shepherd's hook do I need?
Match the centimetres to the job, not to the tallest title. In this set, 60–90 cm packs are the light-hook height, and the feeder stations list about 80–196 cm including a 16 cm base, or up to 230 cm on NUERPO's title. A 90 cm hook cannot also sit well above a cat. Leave out sections you will not use.
How much weight can a shepherd's hook hold?
Only the figure the listing prints. Here that is 2 kg on each YOUNTHYE hook and up to 5 kg on the CHERISHOME station. APACALI, NUERPO, SEGNAYEN and Abaodam print no number. A Woodside page states 8 kg, which is a shop claim outside this set, not a test. If the cell is empty, treat the capacity as unknown.
Is a five-prong base stronger than two spikes?
Not on the evidence in this comparison. Five prongs are a wider foot, not a measured strength grade. NUERPO uses five prongs and the UK texts still report flex, a broken weld and baskets that buckled the pole. YOUNTHYE uses two prongs and prints 2 kg, which is at least a number.
What does heavy duty mean on a shepherd's hook?
It means the seller typed the words. SEGNAYEN is called a heavy duty bird feeder pole and the listing still has no kilogram. CHERISHOME's 19 mm line is a hollow-tube diameter, next to a pack weight of 1.44 kg. Use the printed load and the UK comments about locks, threads and rust.
Why does the Amazon size say 10 mm when the title says 90 cm?
The 10 x 10 x 10 mm cells on APACALI and YOUNTHYE, and the 25 x 25 x 25 mm cell on NUERPO, are parcel fields. They are not the hook. SEGNAYEN's 22 x 12 x 6 cm details also fight a title height of up to 194 cm. Use the title height and the section count.
Can one hook do lights, feeders and a basket?
Not if you want a stated load for each job. Lights fit a short hook that prints about 2 kg. Feeders want a station whose UK comments describe feeders. A watered basket needs a number above that 2 kg line. One photograph that shows all three is an advert.
