Shepherd's hook for a hanging basket

Updated: 22 October 2026

The photograph shows two planted baskets and a black crook, and the bullet never says what they weigh after you water them. A shepherd's hook for a hanging basket is a load question first. Hang a basket only when the listing prints a figure that still covers it after watering. A basket in the photo is decoration until that number exists. Seller guidance and the amazon.co.uk listings were read on 20 October 2026. Those weights are not a lab result. The table is the [shepherd's crook comparison](/hub/garden-decor/shepherd-s-crook).

Weigh the basket after you water it

A dry basket in a product photo is not the load on a windy evening. The Hanging Basket Company says a planted, watered 30 cm basket can be about 5–7 kg, and a 40 cm basket can pass 10 kg, before wind. That is seller guidance, not a test we repeated. The RHS Plants Hi-Lo pulley is rated up to 9 kg for a 30–35 cm basket. It is a pulley, not a stake, so do not borrow the 9 kg as a crook rating. Amethyst Horticulture describes an unplanted self-watering basket at 6 kg and a planted one at about 25–30 kg, with a 6 litre reservoir. That is not a 30 cm wire basket. Weigh your own after watering. Wind sits on top of the 5–7 kg figure. The decision order is the shepherd's hook buying guide.

Two kilograms is a light hook

YOUNTHYE states 2 kg, also written as 4.4 lb, on each hook in an eight-pack at £22.99, at 60 cm or 90 cm. Two kilograms sits below the 5–7 kg band for a watered 30 cm basket. The title mentioning a basket does not change that. This pack is for lights. The best shepherd's hook page says so. APACALI is eight hooks at £23.49, titled at 90 cm, with no kilogram. One UK text said a small basket, lighter than the advert, was already too much, while solar jars were fine. A blank cell is not a quieter way of saying 5 kg. A 90 cm hook puts the basket at head height. The height does not add capacity.

Five kilograms is the top of this set, not a large basket

CHERISHOME states up to 5 kg on one station at £21.99. Heights run to 196 cm, including a 16 cm base. Five kilograms meets the bottom of the 5–7 kg band and does not cover a 40 cm basket past 10 kg. At nearly 2 metres the lever is longer than on a 90 cm hook. One UK buyer hung a plant basket and said it stayed balanced. That comment is not a reason to treat 5 kg as 7 kg. SEGNAYEN and NUERPO print no kilogram. NUERPO's UK texts say small baskets buckled a set in a light wind. If your basket is nearer 7 kg than 5 kg, this set has no stated match. A second stake does not add the kilograms together.

A wall bracket is a different fixing

Use a wall bracket when the printed load is too low, the soil will not hold a fork, or you are standing on paving. Thorness sells a 25 cm coated-steel bracket, stated up to 18 kg, at £10. That 18 kg is the bracket's claim. It does not transfer to a ground stake. British Ironwork Centre lists a 41 cm wrought-iron bracket at £44.99 with no kilogram on the page we saw. A longer arm is a longer lever. The Metal Bracket Company states 40 kg on a made-to-order bracket and puts installation on the buyer. If you do not trust the wall, stop and ask a professional. Match a watered weight to a printed figure, or move the basket to a bracket whose own figure covers it.

Common questions

Can a shepherd's hook hold a hanging basket?
Only when the listing prints a load that still covers your basket after watering. YOUNTHYE at 2 kg is below seller guidance of about 5–7 kg for a watered 30 cm basket. CHERISHOME at up to 5 kg only meets the bottom of that band. The other listings print nothing. Weigh yours after watering before you hang it.
How heavy is a hanging basket after you water it?
The Hanging Basket Company says a planted, watered 30 cm basket can be about 5–7 kg, and a 40 cm basket can pass 10 kg, before wind. That is seller guidance. An RHS pulley rated up to 9 kg is not a stake. A self-watering reservoir basket can be around 25–30 kg in one maker's description. Do not use that figure for an ordinary wire basket.
Is 2 kg enough for a basket?
No, not for the watered 30 cm band of about 5–7 kg. YOUNTHYE prints 2 kg, or 4.4 lb, and describes lightweight items. A dry basket in a photo can look fine and still be too heavy after you water it. Use the 2 kg pack for lights.
Is 5 kg enough for a 30 cm basket?
It sits on the bottom of the 5–7 kg seller band, so it might cover a lighter 30 cm basket and it does not cover one at the top of that band, or a 40 cm basket past 10 kg. CHERISHOME prints up to 5 kg, at a height up to 196 cm. One UK comment is not a new capacity. If you are unsure, do not hang it there.
Should I use a wall bracket instead?
Yes, when the stake's printed load is below the watered basket, or the ground is paving. Thorness states up to 18 kg on a 25 cm bracket at £10. That figure belongs to the bracket, not to these crooks. A longer projection is a longer lever, and a higher stated figure still leaves the wall to you.
