How to install a shepherd's hook

Updated: 22 October 2026

The bag on the path is four or five tubes, a fork and a hook, and the listing says you need no tools. American sheets talk about a rubber mallet and a cement pit. Those instructions are for a different object, and one UK buyer has already snapped a weld by forcing a spike. This is how to install a shepherd's hook when the stake is a sectional amazon.co.uk station, or a one-piece crook you push into a lawn. We did not test burial depth in a lab. The models sit on the [shepherd's crook comparison](/hub/garden-decor/shepherd-s-crook).

Screw it together before it touches the soil

Lay the sections on the flat and hand-tighten every joint before the fork meets the lawn. CHERISHOME, SEGNAYEN, YOUNTHYE and APACALI say the same sequence: screw, then push, with no tools. NUERPO's UK bullet says no additional tools. A video with a drill and a deck bracket is the United States product mixed into the NUERPO reviews, not this ground fork. Leave out height you will not use. CHERISHOME can stand at 81–196 cm, including a 16 cm base. Extra tube is extra lever. NUERPO threads strip if you over-tighten them. One YOUNTHYE buyer lost the thread piece on three hooks. SEGNAYEN's joints keep turning. If a joint spins, stop. If the metal is the problem, use the shepherd's hook buying guide.

Choose ground you can push, and that you can see

You want firm soil you can push a fork into, clear of stones and of anything buried. A border dug last weekend will not hold a tall station. Paving, decking and a patio slab are the wrong fixing for these prongs. One CHERISHOME buyer tied the pole to a fence instead of burying the prongs. That is a confession that the spot was wrong, not a method to copy. Stop if you cannot see pipes, cables or irrigation under the fork. These listings do not ask for concrete. If the only place is a patio, use a bracket on a wall you trust, or leave the hook in the shed.

Push with your foot, and do not hammer the fork

Press the prongs in with your foot until the foot is seated. Do not stand on the crook and do not hammer the top. Crocus, on a one-piece feeder hook with 160 cm above ground and a 20 cm dog-leg spike, says to put your foot on the spike and to water dry hard ground first. Another Crocus hanger is 185 cm above the ground and 29 cm below. That 29 cm is that product's spike, not a universal burial. CHERISHOME and SEGNAYEN include a 16 cm base in their height lists, which is a different measurement. Hard ground gets water, then another push, not a mallet. One NUERPO spike broke at a weld on the way in. Sight the pole from two directions. A prong left half out will walk out when the feeder swings.

Hang the real thing, then look again

Hang the object you actually own, not a lighter stand-in. A lantern is not a watered basket, and an empty hook is not a feeder full of seed. If the pole leans once the weight is on, the soil is too loose, the foot is not seated, or the tube is too light. Tying it to a fence does not make the fork a proper installation. Lean the next morning usually means the soil slumped or a joint unwound. If the load is a basket and the pole bows, go to the shepherd's hook for a hanging basket page. Fit a wall bracket only if you are confident about the wall.

Common questions

How do you put a shepherd's hook in the ground?
Assemble and hand-tighten the sections on the flat, leave out height you will not use, then push the prongs in with your foot until the foot is seated. The listings in this set say no tools. If a joint spins or a spike bends, stop. Forcing it is how threads and welds fail in the UK comments.
How deep should a shepherd hook go?
There is no single depth for every hook. Crocus states 29 cm below ground on one hanger that stands 185 cm above, and a 20 cm dog-leg on another. CHERISHOME and SEGNAYEN include a 16 cm base in their listed heights, which is not the same as a buried spike. Push until the foot is seated. Do not copy an American cement hole.
What if the ground is hard?
Water the spot and try the foot push again, which is what Crocus advises on dry hard ground. If the fork still will not enter, move the hook. Do not hammer a thin five-prong casting. A NUERPO spike broke at a weld on the way into the ground.
Should I use a hammer or a mallet?
Not on these multi-prong feet. The UK listings say no tools, and a weld has already failed when a spike was forced. On a one-piece crook, Crocus still says foot on the spike, not a blow on the top. If the lawn needs a hammer, it is the wrong lawn for this hook.
Why do the threads strip?
Because the joint was over-tightened, or the thread piece was thin to start with. NUERPO comments describe stripped threads. YOUNTHYE lost the thread piece on three hooks for one buyer. SEGNAYEN joints keep turning so they never really lock. Hand-tighten on the flat and stop when the faces meet.
Why does the pole lean the next day?
The soil was loose, the foot was not fully seated, or a joint unwound overnight. Freshly dug beds do this even when the threads felt tight. If the pole bows only after you hang a basket, the load is the problem, and more burial will not turn a light tube into a bracket.
