Shepherd's hook for a bird feeder

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want birds at the end of the lawn, not a lantern hook that leans when a feeder fills with rain. A shepherd's hook for a bird feeder has to stand far enough from cover, high enough that a cat crosses open ground, and low enough that you can still take the feeder down every week. RSPCA, RSPB and BTO guidance sets that placement. A tall tube is not cat-proof, and nothing here is a lab test. The six listings sit on the [shepherd's crook comparison](/hub/garden-decor/shepherd-s-crook).

Put the feeder where a cat has to cross open ground

The RSPCA says to hang feeders well above cat height, away from bushes, branches, walls and roosts, and to avoid flat feeders. The RSPB shop guide asks for at least 2 metres from a jumping-off point such as a tree, a shrub or a fence. Cats Protection says cats cannot climb a tall, thin shepherd's hook. That line is their wording, not a guarantee. A cat can still launch from a fence, a bin or a branch. A baffle can help, and the RSPB is clear that it is not squirrel-proof. Squirrels jump from the ground and drop from above. We are not inventing a baffle diameter for these crooks. Keep the 2 metre gap anyway. A hook tucked into a shrub has already failed the placement.

A 90 cm light hook is not that place

YOUNTHYE tops out at 60 cm or 90 cm and states 2 kg, also written as 4.4 lb, on each of eight hooks at £22.99. The bullet mentions small bird feeders among lightweight items. That is a light-hook sentence, not the RSPB placement. APACALI is a 90 cm eight-pack at £23.49 with no kilogram. Abaodam is 30 cm. None of those is a feeding station you can site 2 metres from a fence. CHERISHOME lists up to 196 cm, including a 16 cm base, stated up to 5 kg, at £21.99. The pack weighs 1.44 kg and the bullet says 19 mm hollow steel. SEGNAYEN lists up to 194 cm at £19.99 and prints no load. A 2.2 m, 25 mm RSPB station at about £35 is the stouter comparison. You still have to lift the feeder off.

You have to be able to take the feeder down

The RSPCA says clean feeders at least weekly. The BTO says about weekly, outdoors, and to move the site, and to stop for at least two weeks if birds look sick. The RSPB's note is weekly, with a weak bleach solution or an animal-safe disinfectant. Do that on the ground. If you cannot lift the feeder off without climbing, the pole is too tall for the way you clean. The BTO pauses seeds and peanuts from May to October. The RSPB dates that pause from 1 May to 31 October and still allows mealworms and fat. CHERISHOME sells the feeders separately. A pole that sways is a light tube or a loose foot. Shorten a section or move the stake.

What the UK comments say about these stations

CHERISHOME's UK texts mostly match a feeder station. One buyer said the sections did not lock. The named pick is on the best shepherd's hook page. SEGNAYEN's joints rusted within three days in one review and within two weeks in another, against a rust-resistant bullet. Joints that keep turning make a feeder walk around the pole. NUERPO's UK texts describe thin poles, a broken weld and baskets that buckled a set. The 4.3 from 350 is not seven British endorsements. If a pole you own sways, check the foot on the how to install a shepherd's hook page.

Common questions

How high should a bird feeder be to deter cats?
The RSPCA says well above cat height, away from cover and roosts. Cats Protection says cats cannot climb a tall, thin shepherd's hook. Treat that as their claim, because a cat can still jump from a fence or a branch. In this set, stations near 194–196 cm can approach that height. A 90 cm light hook cannot. High is not the same as cat-proof.
How far from a fence or a shrub should the pole stand?
The RSPB shop guide says at least 2 metres from a tree, a shrub or a fence. A British seller of a 90 cm hook gives the same gap, which that short hook cannot combine with a feeder at 1.5–2 m. Measure the gap before you push the fork in. A hook against a fence fails the rule even if the metal is the tall station.
Will a squirrel still reach a shepherd's hook?
Yes, it might. The RSPB says a baffle helps and is not a guarantee, because squirrels jump from the ground and drop from above. Keep the 2 metre gap from cover anyway. A squirrel on the pole is a reason to move the feeder or add a guard that fits, not proof that the next hook is squirrel-proof.
Is a 90 cm hook high enough?
Not for this placement. YOUNTHYE and APACALI stop at about 90 cm, and YOUNTHYE's 2 kg line is a light-load claim that mentions small feeders. The RSPCA wants the feeder well above cat height. Use a 90 cm hook for lights. Use a station near 2 metres when the job is birds.
How often do you clean a feeder on a hook?
About weekly, which is the RSPCA, RSPB and BTO line, and outdoors if you are following the BTO note. You need to lift the feeder down to do it. Move the site if mess builds up, and stop for at least two weeks if birds look sick.
