Click vinyl vs laminate

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing a wood-effect floor for a kitchen, a hall or a bedroom, and both products click together. The lock is the similarity. The core is the difference the first time water gets past the surface. This click vinyl vs laminate page stays on that fork. It uses the four amazon.co.uk click vinyl listings on the [click vinyl comparison](/hub/flooring/click-vinyl), not a national league table, and it does not turn an SPC plank and a flexible glue-down tile into the same product. The criteria inside the vinyl set are on the [click vinyl flooring buying guide](/hub/flooring/click-vinyl/sub/click-vinyl-buying-guide). Prices and stars are the amazon.co.uk figures from 19 October 2026. There is no lab test.

The core, not the click

Laminate’s core is wood-based fibreboard. Tapi’s care guide puts the practical result in one place: water that gets past the surface can swell that core, and they tell you to use a barely damp mop. A clicked joint on laminate is still a joint over fibreboard. A splash you wipe in a minute is a different event from a washing-machine leak you find in the morning. Expert Reviews, writing about bathroom floors, do not treat standard laminate as the default in a wet room, because moisture can warp a wood-fibre core. A product sold as waterproof laminate is its own claim, on its own listing. It is not the same board as the vinyl and SPC packs here. The click vinyl in this set is vinyl or stone polymer composite. Grey and White Cliffs Grandismo are 4 mm vinyl with a 0.55 mm wear layer. London Fog and Fog Gray FLOORNATION are 6.5 mm SPC with the same 0.55 mm wear layer and 1.5 mm IXPE already attached. None of them is a fibreboard core. One grey Grandismo reviewer said the boards were easier to work than laminate and described the floor as waterproof. That is one owner’s account. It is not a soak test, and it does not promote every plank in the set into a wet-room floor. You can picture the spill without a lab. A pan of water knocked over at the sink, wiped within a few minutes, is the case the vinyl core is bought for. The same pan left overnight against a laminate joint is the case fitters mean when they talk about swelling. If you want the fitting order for the vinyl packs, it is on how to lay click vinyl flooring. The core choice comes before the first click.

Kitchen and hall

A kitchen is where this set’s room lines earn their keep. All four listings name a kitchen, and they also name a bathroom. Grandismo says water resistance, with an asterisk on the White Cliffs water-proof line. FLOORNATION’s bullets say 100 percent waterproof and also name wet rooms. Use the kitchen and the tray bathroom. Do not upgrade the wet-room word into a tanked shower. That limit is on click vinyl for a bathroom. For a galley kitchen with a sink, a dishwasher and a door to the garden, the vinyl or SPC core is the reason to leave standard laminate on the shelf. A hall is the mixed case. Wet shoes and a dripping umbrella are spills, which points you at this click vinyl. A hall is also grit, which points you at the wear layer rather than at the word waterproof. Every pack here states 0.55 mm. That film is the same on the 4 mm vinyl and the 6.5 mm SPC, so the thicker plank is not a thicker wearing surface. White Cliffs reviews mention scratches and stains from trainers and rubber toys. A hall will show that kind of mark whether you chose vinyl or laminate. Laminate can shrug off grit on its own wear layer, and then swell if the grit arrived with a puddle that sat in the joint. If the front door is the wettest spot in the house, vinyl from this set is the more coherent buy, underlay rules included. Heat sits in the same rooms more often than people expect. FLOORNATION states underfloor heating up to 27°C. Grandismo states no maximum, and one grey review describes the floor bowing and softening when the heating came on. Do not choose Grandismo over laminate because you assume it is happier on a mat. If the kitchen has underfloor heating, the listing needs a number, or you need advice from the brand, before either core goes down.

A dry bedroom

A bedroom that stays dry is where laminate remains a fair buy. You are not asking the core to survive a sink or a shower tray. You are asking for a click floor, a wood effect and a price you can live with. Standard laminate’s fibreboard core is a poor bathroom default. It is not a poor bedroom default, as long as you accept a barely damp mop and you do not fit it in the en suite on the same afternoon. If the bedroom is actually the landing outside a bathroom, treat it as the hall: spills are likely, and the vinyl core is the point. If the bedroom door opens onto a hall you are also flooring, decide the core for the wetter room first. Running laminate into the hall because the bedroom offcuts are convenient is how a dry-room choice becomes a swollen joint by the mat. A profile in the doorway lets the bedroom stay laminate and the hall stay vinyl. That break is also how a floating floor keeps an expansion gap. Here the point is only that the two materials do not have to be one continuous floor.

Price and the condition

The prices you can use are the ones on these vinyl listings. Grandismo is £29.99 per square metre, and the pack is 1 m², before the underlay the warranty line requires. FLOORNATION is £55.99 for 1.7568 m², which is about £31.87 per square metre if you divide those two figures, with IXPE included. There is no laminate pack price in this comparison, so this page will not invent one or borrow a price from another shop. If a laminate you are holding is far cheaper per square metre, that saving is real only while the room stays dry. A swollen hall wipes it out. The recommendation has a condition. Choose click vinyl from this set when spills are the risk: a kitchen, a hall with wet shoes, or a bathroom with a shower tray that the listing actually names. Choose laminate when the room is a dry bedroom, you will keep water off the joints, and you accept a fibreboard core. Do not choose either click floor, vinyl or laminate, as the default for a continually wet room. That job is sheet vinyl with a cove, not a floating lock. Common questions

Which is better in a kitchen?
Click vinyl from this set, if spills are the reason you are choosing. The core is vinyl or SPC, and all four listings name a kitchen. Standard laminate’s fibreboard core can swell when water sits in a joint. A product marketed as waterproof laminate would need its own listing before you treat it as the same answer.
Which is better in a bedroom?
Laminate is still reasonable in a dry bedroom, with a barely damp mop, if you accept the fibreboard core. If the room is an en suite or the floor runs out to a wet landing, the vinyl core is the better match. You do not need SPC rather than the 4 mm Grandismo solely because the room is a bedroom.
Does laminate survive spills?
A splash you wipe at once is the care Tapi describe, with a barely damp mop. Water left against the joint can swell the wood-based core. That is the failure vinyl in this set is meant to avoid. It is not a claim that laminate cannot be used anywhere.
Is waterproof laminate the same as click vinyl?
No. Waterproof laminate is a laminate claim on a laminate listing. The packs here are vinyl or SPC, with a 0.55 mm wear layer. A shared click and a shared wood effect do not make the cores the same. Judge a waterproof laminate on its own page.
When do you still pick laminate?
Pick it for a dry bedroom, or another room where spills are not the job, and you are content with a fibreboard core and a barely damp mop. Pick click vinyl from this set when the kitchen, the hall or a tray bathroom is the risk. Pick sheet vinyl, not either click floor, when the floor stays wet.
