How to use a right angle drill attachment

Updated: 2026-10-23

The housing spins in your hand and the screw does not move, and it feels as if the attachment is broken. That reaction is what a right-angle head does when nothing braces it. This page is the sequence: which end goes in the drill, how long a bit you need, and when to stop. It does not rank the twelve listings. Those stay on the [right angle drill attachment comparison](/hub/drilling-and-accessories/right-angle-drill-attachment). Products Compared read listing bullets and UK review themes, not a lab, on 22 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Fit the shank and the bit

Take the battery out before the bit goes in. The shank is 1/4 inch hex on the compact DeWalt and Milwaukee heads, and 8 mm hex on the DODUOS and HSEAMALL chucks. The output is the other end. DT20500 reviewers say 25 mm bits sit too deep. DWARA120 reviewers cannot pull small bits back out. A 50 mm Pozi, of the sort in the ColumPRO S003-105 set, leaves a stem to grip. On the QHSXMQ box, reviewers say the 90-degree piece will not chuck into a drill. The buying guide separates those pieces from a single gearbox.

Brace the head

The drill turns the input. The gears turn the bit the other way, and the housing wants to rotate with them. Reviews on the ColumPRO, the Motrijuka pair and the DODUOS say you hold the body, or the head spins and the screw stays put. A magnet keeps the fastener. It does not replace that hand. Guides on the DWARA120 treat the spin as normal reaction, not a defect. Put your second hand on the housing, clear of the jaws and the bit. A side handle, included with the DWARAFS and named as removable on the DT20500, gives you that grip. Start with a short trigger pull. If the head twists out of your fingers, stop. If the gap is too narrow for that second hand, the attachment is the wrong tool for the bay.

Speed, clutch and impact bursts

On a drill-driver, set a low clutch and a low speed before the screw touches. The head will tell you the limit by clicking, heating or walking. Start slower than the drill’s top speed. A maximum-clutch habit saves neither the gearbox nor the finished face. Hammer mode stays off. Nothing in the DODUOS or HSEAMALL bullets asks for hammer. A percussion blow through plastic gears is how a 25 Nm adapter becomes a loose chuck. The Milescraft Drill90PLUS, not in this set, is explicitly refused for hammer drills. An impact driver is allowed only when that model’s listing says impact-rated. Short pulses, not a pinned trigger, are how those heads are described. A 105-degree ColumPRO, a mixed kit or a chuck adapter stays on a drill. The model-by-model permission is on the impact-driver page.

Driving and light drilling

Most of these heads drive a screw you cannot approach square-on. Seat the bit in the recess before you pull the trigger, or you will cam out and mark the door. A pilot hole still matters in hardwood and near an edge. Hex-only heads take driver bits, not round twist bits. For a round bit, use a 0.8–10 mm chuck adapter and stay inside a light hole. DODUOS reviews include the chuck leaving the bit in the wood. Stop there. One UK review limits the 12 inch DWARAFS to driving, not drilling. Large holes should be stepped up, and a joist is outside these adapters.

Stop signs

Stop when the head wobbles, when a retaining ball has dropped out, or when the chuck no longer holds. DODUOS reviews include a unit that arrived in pieces and a chuck that loosened on the first holes. Heat and a click mean you stop. Do not oil it into another attempt on a finished cabinet. If the listing said impact-rated and the gears stripped, that is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 question for the seller. At work, look at the head before you use it.

Common questions

Which end goes in the drill?
The shank goes in the chuck or the impact collet: 1/4 inch hex on the compact heads, 8 mm hex on the DODUOS and HSEAMALL. The bit points at the screw. Fit it with the battery out. Clamping the output end into the drill leaves the housing with nothing to turn.
Why does the attachment spin instead of the screw?
Nothing is resisting the housing. The gears push the bit one way and the body the other. Reviews on the cheaper offsets and the DODUOS say you hold the body. A magnet only keeps the screw on the bit. If there is no room for that hand, the bay needs a different tool.
Should I use the drill clutch or impact mode?
Use a low clutch and a low speed on a drill-driver. Use short pulses on an impact driver only if that exact model is stated as impact-rated. Hammer mode stays off. A 105-degree ColumPRO, a chuck adapter and the DWARAFS are not in the yes list here.
Can I drill with it, or only drive screws?
Drive screws with a hex head and a driver bit. Drill a light hole only with a chuck adapter, and treat a loose chuck as a stop. One UK review says the DWARAFS shaft is for driving, not drilling. Joists and large holes are outside these listings.
Where do my hands go if the gap is too small?
If you cannot brace the housing without putting fingers on the jaws, do not pull the trigger. You need a shorter approach, a dedicated angle drill, or the panel off. A one-handed start is how the head spins and a finished face gets marked.
