Petrol vs electric pressure washer

Updated: 21.10.2026

The patio is green and you are standing between a pull-start petrol washer and a corded machine that needs a socket you may already have. Petrol vs electric pressure washer is a power-source decision, not a ranking of the eleven amazon.co.uk frames in our [petrol pressure washer comparison](/hub/compressors/petrol-pressure-washer). Products Compared set the two options against UK socket advice, the SIP sound-power figures, and Thames Water's temporary use ban as updated on 12 October 2026. We did not measure a garden. Choose electric when a splashproof outdoor socket on an RCD already reaches the work. Choose petrol when the job has no safe mains supply.

Start with the socket

A weatherproof outdoor socket, on a circuit with RCD protection, that can see the car and the flags without a lead through a wet doorway, is an electric washer's home. Electrical Safety First's advice is a UK 3-pin plug, a splashproof outdoor socket, an RCD, no ladder, and no spraying towards sockets. HSE's INDG68 says the flexible cable is the part that fails on a mains cleaner. A kitchen extension through a wet door fails that test. Petrol removes the lead and adds a fuel can, oil, and a cord you pull. A flat or a balcony often has nowhere sensible to store petrol or run an engine. The petrol pressure washer buying guide is for when you have already decided the socket is missing.

Noise, weight, and fuel

In this set the SIP Tempest 160AX lists 104 dB(A) sound power and the 215AX lists 112 dB(A). Both numbers sit above the 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A) action values in the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005. Hearing protection still belongs with these frames. HSE allows up to 30 litres of petrol at home without telling the Petroleum Enforcement Authority, not in a living room. GOV.UK says standard petrol is E10 and that garden equipment may not be compatible. If the machine will sit from October to March, emptying the tank is part of the price.

Power is not only bar

Toolstation's guide treats about 130 bar as often enough to brighten slabs, and warns that machines toward 180 bar and above can mark cars and furniture. The SIP 160AX is rated at 135 bar with 402 litres per hour. The 215AX is rated at 180 bar with 522 litres per hour. A £169 page that shouts 7.5 hp and then disagrees with itself on PSI has not proved it will out-clean a corded machine beside the car. The Generic listing's 3500 PSI, with no flow, is not a reason to prefer petrol. When the socket test has failed, the best petrol pressure washer page splits the SIP pair from Pro Splash and from the £169 cluster.

Water rules hit both

A hosepipe ban does not give petrol a free pass. Thames Water's temporary use ban, updated on 12 October 2026, says a mains-fed pressure washer must not clean patios, drives, paths, walls, or vehicles for households. Stored rainwater is still allowed on that page. The restriction is regional and dated. If your supplier is in that kind of ban, both machines stop at the mains tap. A water butt remains only if the washer can draw from it. The SIP listings state 2 m of suction. Electric, if the outdoor socket is splashproof, on an RCD, and you can reach the job without a lead through the house. Petrol, if the work is beyond a safe cable, and you will store fuel and wear hearing protection.

Common questions

I have an outdoor socket. Do I still want petrol?
Usually no. If the socket is splashproof, protected by an RCD, and close enough that the cable stays outside, a corded washer does the car and a modest patio with less noise and no fuel. Petrol still makes sense if that socket cannot see the far end of a long garden, or if you need a stated flow such as the 522 litres per hour on the SIP 215AX and you accept the weight.
There is no socket at the end of the garden. Is petrol the answer?
Yes, when the alternative is a lead run across wet ground or in through a doorway. That is the job these petrol listings are for. You then choose on flow, a named pump, and reviews, not on the largest PSI. A site with no power at all is the same decision.
Can I run an extension out of the kitchen?
That is a weak substitute for an outdoor socket. Electrical Safety First wants a proper outdoor point and an RCD, and it says not to spray sockets. HSE notes that the flexible cable is the part that fails on a mains cleaner. A lead through a wet door fails that advice. Fit a socket, or buy petrol for the jobs the house cannot reach.
Which is more work to store?
Petrol is. You have engine oil, a fuel can within HSE's 30 litre home limit, and E10 that you should not leave in the tank all winter. The frames here weigh about 25 kg to 35 kg. An electric washer stores as a hose, a lance, and a plug, with no flammable liquid beside it.
Does a hosepipe ban treat both the same?
On a mains-fed patio, drive, path, wall, or vehicle, Thames Water's ban as of 12 October 2026 restricts the pressure washer, whichever motor turns the pump. Stored rainwater is the exception that page allows. Other companies publish their own maps. Petrol is not exempt. Check the supplier that bills your postcode.
Is petrol always more powerful?
Rated pressure and litres per hour decide the jet. The SIP 160AX is rated at 135 bar, in the same region as many corded washers. The 215AX is rated at 180 bar and 522 litres per hour. A 7.5 hp title with no matching flow can be less useful than a plug-in machine beside the car. Reach without a socket is the petrol advantage.
