Fingerprint padlock buying guide

Updated: 20.10.2026

The same words, fingerprint padlock, sit on a 40 g cable lock at £7.99 and on a 658 g gate lock at £59.99. A fingerprint padlock buying guide has to split those jobs before it talks about sensors. Measure the hole you already have, decide who else must get in, and only then compare stars. The [fingerprint padlock comparison](/hub/burglar-protection/padlock-fingerprint) holds the nine amazon.co.uk listings from 19 October 2026. We read those listings, the UK review notes on file, and public guidance from ProtectUK, Sold Secure and Clarion. We did not attack a lock in a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the job, not the sensor

The title on the box is not the job. A shed, a gate, a gym locker and a suitcase ask for different metal. Match the shackle to the hole before you compare stars. The heavier key locks are the Pebble, the Pebble Plus, the P15 and the TenixLox. The locker locks are the P6BF, the P8BF with a 0.4 cm shackle, and the blue Anweller. The Pebble table lists an 8 mm shackle hole, which Insight Security would treat as under the 11 mm rule of thumb for the lowest insurance grades. Who each listing suits is on the best fingerprint padlock page.

Weather codes and a second way in

Waterproof in a title is not an IP code, and an IP code does not mean a wet finger will read. Clarion describes IP65 as low-pressure jets, not immersion. The Pebble and the Pebble Plus claim IP65, the TenixLox claims IP66, and the P15 says not to immerse it. The P6BF says waterproof and prints no code. The HS0480, the HS0458, the P8BF and the blue Anweller state none. The second way in is a key, a code, or USB power. A flat cell leaves the shackle shut. The HS0458’s backup is a USB key and printed code 33. How a shed hasp changes the choice is on the fingerprint padlock for a shed page.

App sharing, then the battery

An app is for several people beside the lock, not for opening it from the office. The Pebble Plus names the Prezlock app and prints Wi-Fi, while the bullets do not describe an internet unlock. A P6BF review says the app waits until someone touches the pad. A P8BF review says the app wanted a user over 13. Try that before a child’s kit is shut inside. The included list names a cable and the bullets say none is supplied. Test the port before the shackle closes.

What this does not prove

None of these nine listings shows a Sold Secure mark or a BS EN 12320 grade. ProtectUK points padlocks on hasps at BS EN 12320 or an equivalent, and at a closed or shrouded shackle. Sold Secure maps Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond onto CEN grades 3 to 6. ASTM Grade 3 on the Prezlock pages, with a stated pull over 453 kg, is a US claim. It is not CEN grade 3. If the policy names a grade, leave this set. A 4.7 from five reviews is not the same evidence as 4.2 from 765.

Settle the hole before you compare stars

Measure the hole, name who else must get in, and decide whether a flat cell would trap something you cannot cut free. If it would, skip a lock with no backup key. If the schedule names Bronze or a CEN grade, this set is the wrong shelf. Use the comparison only after the job, the hole, the backup and the weather code are settled.

Common questions

What should I measure before I buy?
Measure the hole the shackle must pass through. A heavy body on the wrong hole does not lock the door. The P8BF states a 0.4 cm shackle, the HS0458 is a 3 mm cable, and the Pebble table lists an 8 mm shackle hole. If a listing does not state a diameter, do not guess it from the photo.
Do I need a backup key?
You need a second way in when the battery is flat. The Pebble, Pebble Plus, P15 and TenixLox list mechanical keys. The P6BF, the blue Anweller, the P8BF and the HS0480 do not. The HS0458 lists a USB key and the code 33. If a flat cell would trap kit you cannot cut free, skip a lock with no backup.
Does waterproof mean the sensor works in the rain?
No. IP65, on the Clarion guide, is about jets on the case, not a wet fingertip. The P6BF review is the worked example: heavy rain forced the app because the pad would not read, and the title had still said waterproof without an IP code. Dry the finger and the pad, or use the key.
Is a Bluetooth app the same as opening the lock from work?
No. The reviews in this set describe a phone next to the lock. The P6BF app waits until the fingerprint area is touched. The Pebble Plus connectivity line says Wi-Fi, and the bullets do not describe remote unlock over the internet. A watch unlock on that model still needed the phone app open nearby.
Does ASTM Grade 3 mean a UK insurance grade?
No. ASTM Grade 3 on the Prezlock pages is a US claim, including a stated pull over 453 kg. Sold Secure and BS EN 12320 are the frames ProtectUK and the Sold Secure catalogue describe, and none of these nine listings shows those marks. Do not write ASTM Grade 3 on a claim as if it were CEN grade 3.
How many fingerprints do I actually need?
Count the people who must open it, then add a spare slot. The Pebble and the P15 state 100. The TenixLox states 50. The HS0480, HS0458, P8BF and blue Anweller state 20. The Pebble Plus and the P6BF do not state a number. A hundred does not make the shackle stronger.
