How to charge a cordless lamp without cooking the cell

Updated: 2026-10-21

You have just unboxed a cordless lamp, the only lead is a short USB cable, and the bedside charger is the fast one from your phone. Several listings in our [cordless lamp comparison](/hub/workshop/cordless-lamp) allow only 5 V, the wall plug is often missing, and the longest hour is the dim setting. This page is the charge, not a ranking. If you have not chosen one yet, start with the [cordless table lamp buying guide](/hub/workshop/cordless-lamp/sub/cordless-lamp-buying-guide). We did not time a charge. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Use a 5 V source

When the listing says 5 V, charge at 5 V. The MJ PREMIER glass lamp allows only a standard 5 V DC charger, not a fast charger and not anything above 5 V. It quotes four hours and a blue light while charging. The cable is included. The plug is not. Do not copy a higher voltage from another brand. The UPXNBOR says avoid fast chargers and charge fully first. It is 3.7 V, and 0–5 °C may cut capacity to about 70–80%. The OUTON states a 3–5 hour charge. The Litluzecozy states about two hours on USB-C. If the case swells or the lamp gets hot, unplug it.

The AAA lamp is not this charge

The small MJ PREMIER does not belong in the USB steps. It runs on two AAA cells at 3 V. You replace them. You do not USB-charge them, and the listing does not confirm the cells are in the box.

How to read the hour claim

People quote the flattering end of a range. The OUTON says up to 13–120 hours, and a review return sits around 10 hours. The fuaoddda separates 12 hours at full brightness from over 270 hours on low. The Litluzecozy prints 16 hours high or 32 low, and a review doubts the 16-hour claim. The UPXNBOR prints 16, 9 and 7 hours, while many of 459 reviews say about an hour to about four hours. Lamp Library’s rule of thumb is about eight hours at a medium setting. After a damp evening, charge indoors once the lamp is dry, as on the outdoor cordless lamp page.

When it will not charge

Try a known 5 V source, then a second cable. The MJ PREMIER blue light means a charge is happening. The OUTON shows 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. If nothing lights, stop. The UPXNBOR file includes dead charge ports, including after the return window. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers goods that are faulty or not as described. Do not open a sealed cell. GOV.UK guidance says not to put a finished cell in the household rubbish. The next lamp is on the best cordless lamp page.

Common questions

Can I use my phone fast charger?
Not if the listing says 5 V only. The MJ PREMIER glass lamp forbids a fast charger and any adapter above 5 V. The UPXNBOR also says to avoid fast chargers. A phone charger that raises the voltage to feed a handset is the wrong source, even when the USB-C plug fits. Use a plain 5 V adapter. If your listing prints a different input, follow that figure, and do not borrow a higher voltage from another brand’s page.
How long should the first charge take?
It depends on the listing. The Litluzecozy says about two hours, the OUTON says 3–5 hours, the MJ PREMIER glass lamp says four hours, and the PreeOtti’s cons line says about six hours. One fuaoddda review needed a full day the first time. Charge fully before you judge the runtime, especially on the UPXNBOR, which tells you to do that. There is no single first-charge time for every cordless lamp in this set.
Why is there no plug in the box?
Because many of these parcels are a lamp and a USB cable. The MJ PREMIER glass listing says the cable is included and the plug is not. The Litluzecozy box is the lamp, a USB-A to USB-C cable and a manual. You supply the 5 V adapter. That adapter, if it plugs into a UK socket, is the BS 1363 part. Do not assume a British mains plug is in the parcel unless the included-components line names one.
The lamp says 120 hours and died after an evening. Is it faulty?
Not automatically. On the OUTON, 120 hours is the long end of a 13–120 hour claim, and a review return around 10 hours sits near the short end. Treat the long figure as the dimmest setting. A lamp that then gives you a few minutes, or that will not charge at all, is a different problem and a reason to contact the seller. Compare what you got with the review file before you assume the headline.
What do I do if it will not charge at all?
Confirm the source is 5 V, try a second cable, and watch for the indicator that listing describes, such as the MJ PREMIER’s blue light or the OUTON’s four-step gauge. If it still does nothing, return it. Do not open the lamp to reach the cell. Reviews on the UPXNBOR include ports that died, including after the return window, which is why you should not wait weeks to check a new lamp.
Does the AAA lamp use the same steps?
No. The small MJ PREMIER uses two AAA cells at 3 V and a replaceable bulb stated at 29–33 lumens. You fit cells, you do not USB-charge the lamp, and the listing does not confirm the cells are supplied. The timer is 6 hours on and 18 hours off, or always on. If the glow is too dim, that is the lumen figure, not a flat rechargeable cell.
