Wi-Fi thermostat for a combi boiler

Updated: October 2026

A Wi-Fi thermostat for a combi boiler should programme space heating, leave hot-water temperature on the boiler, and match the terminals before you pay. You want phone schedules on a simple heating call. A stored-hot-water channel is the wrong test, because a combi heats water when the tap opens. The stat still has to be volt-free or switched live in the way that boiler expects. Cylinder timing stays off this page. The rows themselves are the [Wi-Fi room thermostat comparison](/hub/thermostats/wifi-room-thermostat). Products Compared used these amazon.co.uk listings and public UK notes, not a lab. A combi does not store the hot water

tado's help page puts the split in functional terms. A combi heats water when a tap opens, so it does not need a hot-water schedule on the room stat. A programmer with a stored-water channel is for a system that preheats a cylinder. We are not repeating any claim about which boiler type is more common in the UK. The distinction you need is on demand versus a tank. Set the hot-water temperature on the boiler's own control. Use the Wi-Fi stat for when the rooms call for heat, including a weekday setback if you are out. If a tank is actually in the house, you are not the reader this page is for, even when the boiler brand matches a combi advert. That includes a system boiler with an unvented cylinder sat in an airing cupboard. The 60-minute boost some receivers offer is a stored-water feature in tado's note, not a reason to demand a hot-water programme from a combi stat.

The stat still has to match the terminals

A combi still needs a room thermostat. Flameport separates two families and says you must not join them. A volt-free combi wants a two-wire stat, and that pair must not see mains. A switched-live combi wants mains on the switched-live terminal. Some boilers offer both sets. Linking them can damage the board, which is why two wires on a title is not enough until you know which two. On a volt-free combi the stat closes a dry contact, the boiler decides the flow temperature, and 230 V never arrives on that pair. A mains wall stat that needs live, neutral, and a switched output is a different count of cores, even in the same kitchen. If you cannot tell the families apart from the manual, do not buy on the word combi alone. Relay or dry contact remains valid when a modulating bus is absent. Whether modulation exists at all is the OpenTherm or relay page.

Listings that say combi, and the conflicts

Several rows mention a combi or a generic boiler, and each has a skip line. The BEOK at about £42.99 is titled as a two-wire combi stat, with on/off control, Tuya or Smart Life, and three AA cells not included. Skip it if heating must not stay on when the batteries fail. A review reports that fault, and other reviews describe cells lasting weeks. The Vibe at about £49.95 states OpenTherm and volt-free switching for combination boilers, with four periods a day. Skip it if you need the components line to list the receiver, because that line names only a wall-mount bracket while the description talks about a receiver beside the boiler. The wireless tado X starter B0D9QBPV51 at about £129.99 puts hot water in the title. A review says Alexa controlled heating and not hot water, so do not buy it to command combi hot water by voice. The other starter, B0H2MF6S5R at about £156.44, has a programmer line that says hot-water control. That is the cylinder feature. Do not treat it as the default combi buy. The MincoHome at about £32.99 says gas boiler in the title and ships a 3 m probe that the listing limits to 16 A electric heating. The KETOTEK at about £44.99 is dry contact for a boiler. A review says it would not replace a two-wire live-and-return Honeywell. None of these titles replaces the terminal check. Who should skip each listing across the whole set is on the best Wi-Fi room thermostat page.

Boiler Plus is not a product badge

If you are replacing a gas combi in England, Boiler Plus is a rule for that installation, dated from 6 April 2018. You need time and temperature control, plus one extra measure: weather compensation, load compensation, flue-gas heat recovery, or a smart control with automation and optimisation. BEAMA's note on the smart option adds optimum start and a way to change settings without standing at the wall. An app timer on its own is not automatically that package. Approved Document L is the England dwellings guidance. Wales and Scotland do not word the extra rule in the same way, which is as far as the installer notes we used will stretch. We are not inventing a statute for those nations. A Class VI or 4 percent line on the Vibe listing is the manufacturer's ErP wording, not a bill we measured. Load compensation through OpenTherm only counts in this conversation when the boiler actually has the bus. Weather compensation is a sensor and a curve, not a weekly schedule. If your installer is replacing the boiler, ask which extra measure they are signing off. If you are only changing the room stat, Boiler Plus does not stick a pass mark on every listing that says Wi-Fi. The England rule is set out in Boiler Plus and smart controls.

Common questions

Do I need hot-water control on a combi thermostat?
No, not for the tap. A combi heats water when you open it, and you set that temperature on the boiler. The room thermostat calls for space heat. A hot-water channel belongs to a stored cylinder, which is a different system and a different page.
Can a Wi-Fi stat run a combi boiler?
Yes, when the stat's output matches the combi's control terminals and the kit includes the receiver or bridge this install needs. Wi-Fi adds the phone schedule. It does not choose volt-free versus switched live for you. Read the boiler manual before you treat a works with combis line as a fit.
What is a 2-wire combi thermostat?
On a volt-free combi it is the two cores that form a dry contact, with no mains on that pair. Flameport says that pair must not see mains. A switched-live combi is a different two-wire or three-wire job. The BEOK title says two-wire, and you still confirm which family your terminals are.
Will a dry-contact stat damage a combi?
A dry-contact stat is the normal partner for a volt-free input. Damage is the risk Flameport describes when mains is put on a volt-free pair, or when the volt-free pair and the switched-live pair are joined. Match one family only. If you are unsure which pair is live, stop and get the boiler manual or an engineer.
Does Boiler Plus mean any smart thermostat qualifies?
No. In England, a gas combi replacement needs time and temperature control plus one extra measure from the Boiler Plus list. BEAMA's smart-control description includes automation, optimisation, optimum start, and remote adjustment. A weekly app timer is not automatically that measure, and the rule is not worded identically in Wales and Scotland.
Which listing in this set is actually aimed at a combi?
The BEOK title is a two-wire combi stat, and the Vibe description names combination boilers with OpenTherm and volt-free switching. Both still have skip lines: battery fail-on for the BEOK, and a components line that does not list the receiver for the Vibe. Gas boiler on the MincoHome title does not make the 16 A probe a combi sensor.
Can Alexa turn the hot water on if I have a combi?
There is no stored hot water for Alexa to enable on a plain combi. The boiler heats at the tap. On B0D9QBPV51 a review says voice control covered heating and not hot water, even though the title mentions hot water. Do not buy a voice claim as a combi hot-water switch. What a voice line costs is a separate question in what an Alexa thermostat costs.
What if my combi also has a hot-water cylinder?
Then you are outside this page. A cylinder needs stored-water timing, which is the programmer job, not the on-demand combi job. Confirm what is actually piped before you follow a combi title. If a tank is in the airing cupboard, use a control path that times that store.
