Wi-Fi room thermostat buying guide

Updated: October 2026

A Wi-Fi room thermostat buying guide is a checklist for the order, not a winner's table. You might be swapping a dial or a programmer on a gas combi, a system boiler with a cylinder, or, less often, an oil boiler or a heat pump. The app does not tell you which terminals the boiler expects, and a low shelf price does not put a receiver in the box. Work through heating type, the boiler interface, the packed contents, power and wire count, hot water, then the app and any fee. The [Wi-Fi room thermostat comparison](/hub/thermostats/wifi-room-thermostat) holds the product rows. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf prices in this set on 16 October 2026. Products Compared compared those listings and public UK sources, not a lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Check the heating type first

Name the heat source before you compare screens. A gas combi heats water when a tap opens, so the room stat's job is the space-heating call. A system or regular boiler with a hot-water cylinder is a different job, because something still has to time the stored water. An electric underfloor mat or a plug-in heater is another product, even when search results put a 16 A floor stat beside a boiler stat. The Wi-Fi room thermostat on a combi stays with on-demand hot water. A heat-pump or underfloor line on one listing is not a promise for every row.

Match the boiler interface

The interface is the yes-or-no check. A relay or a dry contact is an on/off call: the stat asks for heat, and the boiler keeps its own flow setting. Switched live is a powered call, often a live feed the old stat switched. OpenTherm is a digital bus that can ask the boiler to reduce output, and it only helps when the boiler manual names those terminals and the stat is wired to them. A touchscreen does not prove any of those three. The KETOTEK at about £44.99 is sold as a dry-contact boiler stat, with 3 A and 220 V in the title. UK mains are nominally 230 V, so treat that 220 V line as listing wording. One review says it will not replace a two-wire live-and-return Honeywell. The BEOK at about £42.99 is pitched as a two-wire on/off combi stat. The OpenTherm or relay page goes into the protocol. If you cannot tell dry contact from switched live, do not order on the hope that the app will sort it out.

See what is actually in the box

A wireless room unit still needs something wired at the boiler, unless you already own that hub. Read the components line, not only the title. The wired tado X add-on, B0CWPG6G5W, at about £79.99 states that Bridge X is not included. You need a Bridge X or another Thread border router, and six AAA cells do not replace that hub. The V3+ internet bridge is not an X bridge. The wireless starter B0D9QBPV51 at about £129.99 puts Bridge X in the title, while the components line names a Wireless Receiver X, a sensor, and a stand. One review says the parcel had no Bridge X. B0H2MF6S5R at about £156.44 says wired with Bridge X in the title, and the components line lists a wireless thermostat, programmer, and stand, not Bridge X. The Vibe at about £49.95 describes a receiver, while the components line lists only a wall-mount bracket. If the first kit omits the hub the listing requires, leave it.

Count the wires, the power, and the hot water

Power and wire count decide whether the new head is a like-for-like swap. A battery room unit can suit a two-wire position. A mains stat needs a permanent supply and often a deeper back box. A combi usually does not need a stored-water channel, and a cylinder system does. The MincoHome is mains, listed at 95–240 V AC. The 3 m probe in that box is only for 16 A electric heating, not the gas-boiler title. One reviewer needed live, neutral, and two boiler wires, plus a deep back box. The BEOK runs on three AA cells that are not in the about £42.99 price. Reviews describe cells lasting weeks, and one report says the heating stayed on when the batteries failed. If the old stat is a two-wire dial and the new one wants four cores, the shelf price is not the bargain it looks.

App, radio, and any fee

The last check is how the phone joins, and whether a feature in the advert is a subscription. Cheaper rows name Smart Life or Tuya. The tado rows use the tado app, and the add-on's radio line is Thread and Matter rather than a plain Wi-Fi label. Several listings mention 2.4 GHz. A router that offers the phone only a 5 GHz name will not finish setup on those stats. That is a network fact, not a boiler fault. AI Assist is printed on the two tado starter listings at £3.99 a month or £29.99 a year. The add-on names AI Assist and does not print a price. Geofencing and open-window detection are not a free extra you can assume from a smart screen. This folder does not support a measured bill saving, and an app timer is not automatic proof of a Boiler Plus package. When the six checks line up, the best Wi-Fi room thermostat page shows who should skip each named listing.

Common questions

What should I check before I buy a Wi-Fi room thermostat?
Check the heat source, then the boiler interface, then the components line, then power and wire count, then whether you need a hot-water channel, then the app, the radio band, and any printed fee. A photo of the old wiring and the boiler's external-controls page is more useful than the star rating. If either the terminals or the box contents are ambiguous, do not order yet.
Does a wireless kit still need wiring at the boiler?
Yes, in the ordinary UK wet system. The room sensor can sit on a wall or a table, and the receiver or bridge beside the boiler is still wired into the control circuit. A kit that ships only the room head leaves you without that link unless you already own a compatible hub.
Is the tado X add-on enough for a first install?
No. B0CWPG6G5W at about £79.99 is an add-on. The listing says Bridge X is not included, and you need a Bridge X or another suitable Thread border router. Six AAA batteries are in the box. They do not connect the boiler to the internet on their own.
How do I tell dry contact from switched live before I order?
Dry contact, or volt-free, is a switch with no mains on that pair. Switched live is a powered conductor the stat interrupts. The boiler manual or the existing terminal labels are the evidence. A review on the KETOTEK says a two-wire live-and-return Honeywell was the wrong swap, which is the sort of mismatch this check is meant to catch.
Do I need a hot-water channel on a combi?
Usually no. A combi heats water when you open a tap, so the room thermostat calls for space heat and the hot-water temperature stays on the boiler. You need a stored-hot-water channel when a cylinder is actually in the system, which is a different control job.
Why do cheap Wi-Fi stats mention 2.4 GHz?
Many of these apps join the 2.4 GHz network only. The BEOK listing states 2.4 GHz. If the phone is on a 5 GHz-only name, pairing fails even when the boiler wiring is right. Check the router before you blame the thermostat.
Does a smart screen mean OpenTherm?
No. OpenTherm is a shared protocol between the stat and the boiler. A colour display, a weekly schedule, or a voice-assistant line does not create that bus. Read the boiler manual, then the listing's interface line.
