How to use welding gloves safely

Updated: October 2026

Before you strike an arc, put the gloves on cold and make a fist, hold the torch and release a scrap part. That check shows whether the fingers are too long, the cuff leaves a gap or the lining twists when you grip. This guide explains how to use welding gloves through fit, cuff arrangement, dry storage and replacement. One wearing method does not suit every job. If you have not chosen a pair yet, begin with the [welding gloves comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/welding-gloves). The products there range from a 13-inch goatskin style to 16-inch or 40 cm cowhide gauntlets. Prices below are stored GBP shelf prices.

Check the fit before you strike an arc

A welding glove must let you close your hand and release an object without the lining bunching or the glove sliding off. Too tight can fatigue the hand. Too loose can fold the fingertips and weaken your grip. Put on both gloves, operate the torch trigger and feed a cold filler rod. If you cannot do those tasks without heat, the fit will not improve once the leather is warm. Do not assume L, size 10 and one size mean the same dimensions. Ultimate Industrial states size 10/L and has reports of long fingers. YESWELDER and AUAUY are described as oversized. Cxqunzon has both slipping and tight-fit comments. Measure against the manufacturer’s chart. If the glove slides when you shake your hand, away from people and equipment, it is too loose. Return a poor fit rather than softening it during live work. Which stored shapes suit TIG, MIG or a low budget is on the best welding gloves shortlist. Fit remains personal.

Close the cuff-to-sleeve gap

The cuff and protective sleeve must work together so sparks cannot reach bare skin. A long gauntlet may go over a close-fitting sleeve when the overlap stays closed. In another position, the cuff under a suitable protective sleeve can seal better. There is no universal over or under rule. Test it dressed for the job and check that no wrist appears between glove and sleeve. A 16-inch glove can still gap if the jacket rides up. Do not fold the cuff down. That ledge catches hot particles. HSE guidance warns against wearing gloves where they can catch in machinery such as a bench drill. Finish welding and follow the machine’s safe system of work before you move to rotating equipment.

Keep leather dry and free from oil

Start with dry gloves. Moisture, oil and grease can change how heat moves through the leather and may increase burn risk. If a glove becomes wet, change to a dry spare rather than drying it against hot metal. Store pairs in a clean, ventilated place away from direct heat. Ultimate Industrial and Predator state hand wash. AUAUY states hand wash only. Many other listings give no care method. Do not treat those three notes as permission to machine-wash every gauntlet. Where hand washing is allowed, dry the glove naturally and completely. Do not tumble-dry it or place it on a stove unless the instructions permit that. If no care instructions arrived, ask the seller. Smell and cotton shedding, mentioned in Ultimate Industrial reviews, do not by themselves tell you the remaining heat performance.

Inspect before work and replace without delay

Inspect the palm, fingertips, thumb crotch, seams, cuff and lining before every use. Look for holes, split leather, open stitching, charred areas or a lining that has pulled away. HSE workplace guidance requires obvious PPE defects to be reported. A home user can apply the same stop-and-replace rule. Do not patch a heat-damaged palm with tape. WZQH’s seller text warns that prolonged heat can char the leather. Move away as soon as you feel heat, because residual heat can keep moving inward after you let go. One Predator reviewer reported about two weeks in a busy workshop. That does not predict occasional home TIG. A holed, split, charred or open-seamed glove is finished. Keep a dry spare. Thin goatskin and heavy cowhide solve different problems, as the TIG versus MIG welding gloves guide explains.

Common questions

Should welding gloves go over or under the sleeve?
Use the arrangement that maintains a closed overlap without creating a funnel for sparks. Depending on the clothing and welding position, that may mean a gauntlet over a close sleeve or beneath a suitable protective sleeve. Move your arms through the full working position before starting.
What does size 10 mean?
It is a glove size label, but dimensions and fit still vary by maker. Do not assume every size 10 equals every L. Measure your hand using the specific manufacturer’s chart and reject a pair that slides off, constricts the knuckles or leaves excess fingertips.
Can I machine-wash leather welding gloves?
Not unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. The care instructions stored for Ultimate Industrial, Predator and AUAUY specify hand washing, while several other products give no method. Machine washing and tumble drying can damage leather, linings or seams.
When should I replace welding gloves?
Replace them when you find a hole, split, open seam, charred patch, persistent contamination or damaged lining. Also stop if heat reaches your hand abnormally. There is no reliable universal service life in months because use and exposure differ substantially.
Why do my fingers feel hot after I let go?
Heat stored in the outer material can continue moving towards the hand after contact ends. Move away at the first sensation of heat, place the work safely and allow the glove to cool in a safe area. Do not repeat the contact to test its limit.
Can I use welding gloves for grinding?
Only if the glove is suitable for the assessed grinding hazards and cannot create an entanglement risk. A welding label alone does not establish every mechanical requirement. Keep gloves away from rotating machinery where they could catch, and follow the tool’s safe system of work.
