Welding gloves for a log burner

Updated: October 2026

You are about to open a log burner that has been running for an hour, and the kitchen mitt is already too short for the door handle and the ash pan. Welding gloves for a log burner turn up in UK stove reviews because a leather gauntlet covers the wrist and forearm a short mitt leaves bare. They still burn you if you hold the heat. The product grid is on the [welding gloves comparison](/hub/soldering-and-welding/welding-gloves). If you also weld, use that page for the process. The stored amazon.co.uk listings were compared with public UK stove manuals on 16 October 2026. We did not run a laboratory heat test. What a stove actually asks of a glove

Stove makers already supply a gauntlet and still expect a short contact. Stovax’s Elise instructions say to wear those gloves when you open the appliance, refuel, or handle internal metalwork, and they warn that ash can stay hot. Arada’s Ecoburn guide uses its gauntlet for the door, the riddle and the ash pan, keeps it off naked flame and sparks, and puts ash only into metal. A welding gauntlet fits that same pattern: a door handle, a tool, a log or the ash-pan rim, then you let go. It is not for the glass, a glowing grate, or coals in your fingers. The usual miss is a long cuff that still burns you, because you lift the pan and pause while you look for the bucket. Set the metal container down before you open the door. Your stove manual still governs if the gloves came from amazon.co.uk.

Why welding gauntlets show up in the basket

A textile oven mitt stops at the wrist, so the forearm at a hot door frame is bare. SATRA treats contact heat as the relevant oven-glove test and cites domestic ovens around 240°C. A mitt and a leather gauntlet are different products. In this set the gauntlet’s advantage is length, 14 inches, 16 inches or 40 cm, and that extra cuff still does not make a long hold safe. EN 407 contact-heat level 1 means 100°C for at least 15 seconds. That level is printed on other welding gauntlets, not on these listings. Gloves.co.uk sells a Portwest A521 at level 1 (100°C), a Polyco line for short contact up to 100°C, and another welding line up to 250°C. Those other products are only a ceiling check against a 500°C advert with no EN code. WZQH states 350°C for a short period and warns that prolonged heat can char the leather. AUAUY prints 200°C. H HZXVOGEN, TOPDC, YESWELDER and RAPICCA print 500°C without an EN 407 code. None of those figures is a time you may hold a stove tool.

Where the stored pairs still burn

H HZXVOGEN reviews report burns in ordinary oven use and a BBQ deflector that still got through, despite 500°C and a stated ANSI/ISEA heat attribute of 4. That attribute is not an EN 407 level or a BS EN 12477 type. RAPICCA, at £19.98 with claimed 1.5 mm cowhide, is praised for coals and a log burner and is still called not heat proof. One buyer found it flimsy on a baking tray. TOPDC reviews mention limited resistance when lifting hot grates. Ultimate Industrial is cited for a wood stove, and the outer layer can burn if you keep hold of hot material. A door handle can be manageable and a tray can still burn you, because heat crosses the leather while you wait. Stiff, cracked or blackened fingertips mean that pair is finished, and washing will not restore it. Drying, replacement and the cold fit check are in the guide on how to use welding gloves. YESWELDER reviews praise a hot ash pan and call the 40 cm pair very large. If the fingers slide, you drop the tool or clamp harder. Try the empty pan while the glove is cold.

Which shape in this set, and what to skip

Skip thin goatskin for the ash pan. Predator By Ron is a 13-inch goatskin pair at £7.75, built for TIG feel, with a shorter cuff than the cowhide gauntlets. If the real job is welding, use the welding gloves buying guide. WZQH is the most carefully worded heat claim: 16 inches, a 7.5-inch sleeve, claimed 1.2 mm split cowhide, £16.99, and 350°C only for a short period, with the char warning. It is a reasonable stove cuff if you accept that limit. YESWELDER, at £18.99 and 40 cm with a 19 cm sleeve, suits the ash-pan reviews only when you can still close your hand. AUAUY, at £8.99 and a stated 33 cm, prints 200°C and runs large. Check the palm, because one review received a hole. RAPICCA is the thickest specified leather for a brief contact, and it is still not a grate glove. H HZXVOGEN at £13.59 gives about 41 cm of reach, while the oven burns show why 500°C is not a holding temperature. Ultimate Industrial’s WGR at £7.07 says gauntlet in the title and short sleeve in the attributes, so measure the cuff. For the stove, buy the long cowhide you can grip, keep it dry and off the flame, and replace it when it chars.

Common questions

Can I use welding gloves on a log burner?
Yes, for a brief touch on the door, a tool, a log or the ash pan. Stovax and Arada already expect a gauntlet for those jobs, and both still say ash stays hot and the leather stays off naked flame. An amazon.co.uk welding glove does not add a longer safe hold than your stove manual. If heat reaches your hand, put the tool down.
Will welding gloves handle the ash pan?
They can, for a short lift into a metal container you have already set down. YESWELDER reviews mention a hot ash pan, and Arada warns that embers hide in the ash. The glove does not make it safe to carry a full pan across the room or to tip ash into plastic. If the cuff is so large that your grip slides, choose a closer long cowhide pair and test it cold.
Why did 500°C gloves burn me on a tray or a deflector?
That figure is a seller line, not a measured hold time on these listings. H HZXVOGEN reviews describe oven burns and a BBQ deflector that still got through. A RAPICCA review found the glove flimsy for a baking tray even where a log burner was praised. Contact-heat level 1, on other products, is 100°C for at least 15 seconds, and it is not printed here.
Are welding gloves better than oven gloves for a log burner?
They are better on cuff length than a short textile mitt, and no better if you need to hold a hot plate. SATRA treats domestic oven gloves as protective equipment and cites ovens around 240°C. A 14-inch, 16-inch or 40 cm leather gauntlet covers the forearm a mitt leaves bare. Use it for the door and the tool, not for an oven tray or the stove glass.
How long can I hold a stove tool?
Only for the short contact your stove manual implies, then let go. WZQH states 350°C for a short period and warns that longer heat chars the leather. These listings have no stored hold-time, and a 500°C line does not create one. Set a heavy tool down once the door is closed. Heat through the palm means stop.
Do I still follow the stove manual if I bought amazon gloves?
Yes. Your manual is the instruction for opening, refuelling, riddling and emptying ash. Stovax and Arada supply a gauntlet and still require a metal ash container and no naked flame on the leather. Amazon gloves are a substitute cuff, not a new procedure. When the manual and a seller degree disagree, follow the manual.
When is a welding glove the wrong stove glove?
It is the wrong glove if it is thin goatskin, if the cuff is short, if you mean to hold a grate or a tray, or if the leather is charred or holed. Predator By Ron, at 13 inches, is the TIG shape here, not the ash-pan glove. It is also wrong when you need a printed EN 407 level, because these listings do not show one. Use long cowhide only for the brief, dry, off-flame jobs the manuals describe.
