Grass seed not germinating: water, depth and birds

DiagnosisOctober 20267 min read
Bare raked soil where lawn seed was sown, with sparse seedlings and seed still on the surface

Grass seed not germinating is often dry soil, depth or birds. A dry fortnight is a weak test of the packet, and a July heatwave is a hard British window.

Two weeks after sowing, the raked square is still brown, the birds have been busy, and the bag is the thing you want to blame. Grass seed not germinating is often the season, the water, or the fact the seed never touched soil. The Royal Horticultural Society puts grass at about 7–10 days when moisture and timing are right. A dry fortnight is a different experiment. It does not grade the packet.

In short

Wait 7–10 days only if the seedbed has stayed moist in a fair season. Drought, seed left on the surface, seed buried too deep, birds, and sowing onto moss or dense turf all look like a bad bag. Clover can need weeks of watering, not a fortnight. A short weight or a wrong species is a description issue under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. This page does not promise a refund.

The window and the water

Grass seed swells and starts only if the soil around it stays damp. The RHS lawn-from-seed page ties germination to that moisture and to sowing in the proper season, with green often showing in 7–10 days. September and early autumn, or March and April, are the usual British windows. July and a heatwave are when the surface crusts between showers. Seed that dried on day three has missed the germination test.

Water with a fine rose, little and often, so the top centimetre does not turn to dust and the seed does not wash into the path. Feel the soil. If it is dry at fingertip depth, water again. If it is shining and puddled, stop, because waterlogged ground excludes air and rots seed. The RHS plant page for white clover says waterlogged or very acid sites suit that plant poorly, and grass dislikes a swamp as well. The aim is damp, not a pond.

Clover is the slower cousin people judge on a grass timetable. The Grass People, writing about micro clover, describe keeping a new sowing watered for about six weeks, in the region of 5–10 mm at a time. A white-clover lawn that is bare at day 12, after you stopped watering at day 4, is still in that establishment period. Captured clover reviews in this hub include heatwave sowings and seed left dry on the surface. Those comments match the weather, not a laboratory result.

Miracle-Gro multi-purpose in our grass seed comparison is the captured top listing: 5 kg of ryegrass and fescue, up to 165 square metres, £28.94, rated 4.3 from 331 ratings. The listing mentions first shoots in 7 days. That is a seller line, close to the RHS timing of often 7–10 days, and it still assumes moisture. It is not a promise we verified.

Depth and contact

Seed needs to touch damp soil and stay near the surface. Rake a crumb, sow, then rake so most seed is just covered, in the region of half a centimetre, and firm gently with the back of a rake or a board. Seed you can still see glittering after a week was never firmed. Seed under a thick layer of compost, or tilled 3 cm down, has contact and no realistic way up.

Birds are not a myth and not the whole story. Pigeons and sparrows will clear surface seed, especially on a small patch next to a fence. Fleece, pegged loosely for the first week or two, or a few criss-crossed canes, reduces that. Remove the cover once a green haze shows, or the seedlings draw and then scorch. If the seed sat proud with no cover, count birds as a real loss and moisture as the other one.

A hard cap after heavy rain is a third contact problem. The seed is under a crust it cannot push. Break the crust with a light rake as soon as you can walk on the soil, and water gently afterwards. Boots on a wet bed make holes that collect seed and leave the ridges bare, so lay a board if you must cross. A photo at sowing and at day 10 shows whether you buried it.

Acid, compacted and very wet soils are site problems, not packet problems. White clover's poor fit with waterlogging and very acid ground is on the RHS plant page, and grass sits yellow and thin in those spots too. A bare boggy corner, reseeded three times, is the drainage. Reseeding the puddle is how the next bag fails as well.

Sowing onto a living lawn

Overseeding only works where seed can reach soil. Moss, a thatch mat, and dense ryegrass all block that. The RHS note on wildflower meadows is that seed onto dense turf usually fails, and the mechanism is the same for a handful of grass thrown onto a healthy lawn. Rake hard, scarify, or open the bare bits until you see soil, then sow.

Moss is the usual carpet on a shady or damp lawn. Seed on top of moss germinates into the moss and dies when the moss dries, or it never germinates. Pull or scarify the moss back first. Deep shade all day is a light problem, not a dead packet. On thin grass with soil showing, a lawn repair seed product is the closer match. A 5 kg new-lawn bag suits a cleared bed. The wrong rate on the wrong job looks like poor germination.

Meadow seed is stricter. A wildflower mix on a mown lawn fails for the same turf reason, and the first year of a real meadow is bare ground plus a cutting plan. If the brown patch was meant to be poppies, open the flower meadow seeds comparison and start on soil, not on grass. Clover overseeded into a mat has the same contact rule, then the longer watering period.

When the packet itself is the complaint

Some bags are short, split, or not the species in the title. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires goods to match the description. Weight, a seed count, white clover, ryegrass and fescue, and a stated area are description if the seller stated them. Weigh what is left and keep the label. Several clover buyers in our captured reviews described leaks and packs that did not seem to match the area. Those are facts for the seller, with photos. They are not a germination trial.

Up to 165 square metres is a ceiling on the Miracle-Gro listing, at the seller's rate. Birds, a thick overseed onto moss, and a dry week all use seed without delivering that ceiling. A thin result on that area does not, by itself, prove the bag was underweight. Weigh an unopened spare, or the remains plus what you can account for. Red clover where you wanted white shows when the plants grow, and that is a species complaint, separate from drought.

This page will not tell you that you will be refunded. Remedies depend on who sold it, how long you have waited, and whether the description was clear. A rating of 4.3 from 331 people is other buyers' experience of their parcels and their lawns, not a certificate for your soil. £28.94 is the captured amazon.co.uk figure, in GBP, and prices move. Reseed or start again

If water, depth or birds explain the bare soil, overseed once you have changed that condition, in September or in spring if you have missed the moist week. You rarely need to dig the whole lawn out. Rake the crust, sow into the gaps, cover lightly, water, and protect from birds for a fortnight. Mow only when the new grass is tall enough for a high cut, and take the clippings.

If the area is a mud bath, stop adding seed until it drains. If it is deep shade, stop adding sun-mix seed. If the packet was the wrong species or clearly short, resolve that before you reorder the same listing. A repair product belongs on patches. The 5 kg multi-purpose bag belongs on a larger new or thin lawn where you wanted ryegrass and fescue and you can water. Clover belongs in the clover seeds comparison, on a timetable of weeks, not days. Give the second sowing the moisture the first one missed.

Common questions

How long should I wait before deciding grass seed has failed?
The Royal Horticultural Society says grass often germinates in 7–10 days when the season and the moisture are right. A cold November sowing can be slower. A dry fortnight is not a germination test at all, because the seed never had the water the method assumes. Clover is slower again. A micro-clover sowing guide from The Grass People talks about keeping a new sowing watered for about six weeks, with roughly 5–10 mm at a time. Judge the green-up against water and season before you blame the bag.
Was the soil too dry?
If the surface turned to dust, or you sowed in a heatwave and did not water, dryness is the first explanation. Review patterns on clover listings in this hub include heatwave sowings and seed left on the surface with no watering. Grass seed on the RHS timetable needs moisture through germination. Water with a fine rose so you do not wash the seed into a corner. A single soak on day one, then nothing, dries the seed just as it starts. Check 1 cm down with a finger. Dust there means the test has not started.
Did I bury the seed too deep?
Seed needs soil contact, and it still needs to be near the light. Grass and clover raked half a centimetre into a crumb usually have that contact. Seed dumped under a thick layer of compost or topsoil is buried. Seed left shining on a hard cap has no contact, dries in a day, and is easy for birds. If you can still see most of the seed from standing height after a week, it never settled. If you cannot find it under 2 cm of new soil, it was covered too deeply. Correct the depth on the reseed.
Did I sow onto moss or an existing lawn?
Seed that lands on moss, thatch or dense turf often never reaches soil. The RHS wildflower guidance says sowing onto dense turf usually fails, and the same contact problem hits grass and clover overseeded onto a closed sward. Scarify or rake bare soil before you call it an overseed. A patch of moss needs the moss pulled back, not a handful of seed on top. Meadow mixes are even less forgiving of a living lawn. Use a repair or overseed product on thin grass, and a new-lawn rate only on ground you have opened.
Is a July sowing a fair test of the packet?
July heat and dry soil are a hard window in much of Britain. The kinder lawn seasons are early autumn and spring, when you can keep the surface moist without fighting a heatwave. A July bag that sits bare is weak evidence of dead seed. It is strong evidence of season and water. Clover listings attract the same complaint after hot sowings. Wait for September, or water seriously if you must sow now, and do not treat the failure as a reason to abandon the species. Shade under a full summer canopy makes July worse, not better.
Could the packet be short or the wrong seed?
Sometimes the bag is the problem. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods must match the description, including weight, seed count, species and a stated area. Weigh a suspect bag if you still have it, and photograph the label. This article cannot promise a refund or a replacement. Those outcomes depend on the seller, the timing and the words you were shown. A coverage claim that was only up to a figure is a ceiling, not a minimum germination percentage. Keep the packet until the dispute is finished.
Should I reseed or start the bed again?
If the seed was dry, on the surface, or sown onto moss, fix that and overseed in a proper window. You do not need to strip a whole lawn for a missed fortnight of water. If the ground is a cap, rake it open first. If weeds have covered the bed, clear them before more seed. If the packet was light, mislabelled, or a different species from the title, sort the description with the seller before you buy a twin of the same listing. A repair box and a 5 kg new-lawn bag are different jobs.
Which comparison should I open?
New lawn mixes are in the grass seed comparison. The captured top listing is Miracle-Gro multi-purpose, 5 kg of ryegrass and fescue, up to 165 square metres, £28.94, rated 4.3 from 331 ratings, with a seller line about shoots in 7 days. Patches and patch products are in the lawn repair comparison. Clover is separate, and meadow mixes are in the flower meadow comparison. We did not germinate these bags. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
