UK seed packet label: species, grams and certification

A UK seed packet label holds three facts: the species, the grams, and any certification words. See what each line does, and what a title does not prove.
On this page

The parcel is on the kitchen table. The amazon.co.uk title said the bag covers a neat patch of lawn, and the only record you can check before you open the soil is the UK seed packet label you can actually read. Three lines do the work: the species, the grams, and any certification words. A coverage slogan, a lifestyle photo and a star rating sit beside those lines. They do not change them.
The figures below come from captured amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources. We did not germinate the packets in a lab.
In short
Read the species, the weight in grams, and any certification or registration words before you trust an area claim. A small package under the Seed Marketing Regulations 2011 is a weight band. Regulation 20 is the exception, and Schedule 3 covers fodder packages up to 2 kg and 10 kg. That band is a labelling threshold. The listings in this hub do not show a certified-seed label, so this page does not treat those packets as certified.
Species name before the marketing line
Start with the plant. White clover is Trifolium repens. Red clover is Trifolium pratense. Alsike clover is a third species. The Seed Marketing Regulations 2011 name all three on Schedule 1. If the title says clover and the botanical line is missing, you still have a gap. A meadow mix, a ryegrass bag and a cucumber packet can share a checkout and share nothing in the ground.
Words such as micro, wild, premium, fast or shady belong beside a species or a variety. On their own they are a mood. In our clover seeds comparison the captured top listing is Pronto Seed white clover, 2 kg, at £62.98, rated 4.4 from 159 ratings. The title, the unit count and the 2 kg amount broadly agree. The item-weight line says 2.16 kg and the number of items says 2.
Pipolina, printed as Trifolium repens Pipolina on the Garden Lawncare Guy listing, is a named white clover. Wild white clover on the Just Seed listing is still Trifolium repens. Red clover on a Damavand packet is Trifolium pratense. If you wanted a low lawn and the botanical line says Trifolium pratense, the species has already answered you.
Mixes need a contents line. Buckwheat and sainfoin with clover is a cover crop. Ryegrass and fescue is a turf mix. A flower packet that claims no grass should show that in a species list or in the grams. Our flower meadow seeds comparison is where mix pages sit together, including listings whose coverage lines disagree.
Grams and the area claim
Grams are the quantity. Square metres are a rate turned into a promise. The Pronto listing says 1 kg covers up to 100 square metres, which is 10 g per square metre. The bag in the title is 2 kg, so that rate points at about 200 square metres if you accept the "up to" wording. "Up to" is a ceiling. Poor contact, birds and a dry week still leave a patchy result.
At £62.98 for 2 kg, the Pronto bag is cheaper per gram than the small clover packets, and it is a large outlay for a metre or two. Just Seed wild white clover, 1,500 seeds at £3.40, is the other end of the shelf. You can turn 1,500 seeds into a square-metre rate only when the packet also gives seeds per gram or a sowing rate.
Some clover listings print an overseed rate and a bare-ground rate. The lighter rate on a new bed leaves gaps. The heavier rate on dense turf wastes seed that never reaches soil. Our grass seed comparison uses the same caution. "Up to 165 square metres" on a 5 kg ryegrass and fescue mix is the seller's rate for a moist lawn in a sensible season. A dry July on clay is outside that rate.
When two area lines disagree, pause. Damavand meadow pages include a 100 g item weight beside a bullet that also says 10 g. Empathy Mini Meadow states 3 square metres in the title and, in the captured fields, a height line of 3 metres. Weigh the bag if quantity is the dispute. A kitchen scale settles neither variety nor germination. Photograph the label before the seed goes into a bucket.
Certification words you can see
Certified seed, in the sense GOV.UK describes for agricultural crops, is seed that has been through certification for marketing, under a licence. A word in a product title is not that process. The clover pages captured for this hub do not show a CS certified-seed label. This article does not say the packets comply with the Seed Marketing Regulations, and it does not say they breach them. The status is unknown from the page.
Just Seed's wild white clover listing prints Defra 7291 and organic registration AP23164. Defra 7291 identifies a registered business on that page. It is not a certificate that the seed was field-inspected as certified seed. AP23164 is an organic registration. Organic status and certified-seed status answer different buyers.
GMO free, printed with no scheme and no number, is a phrase in the description. Leave it separate from an organic registration and from a CS label that is not on the page. A holding that needs organic seed needs the certificate your certification body asks for.
Regulation 20 of the Seed Marketing Regulations 2011 is the small-package exception, and Schedule 3 sets fodder bands up to 2 kg and up to 10 kg. Those figures describe labelling. A 2 kg bag can sit on a boundary the schedule uses, and that fact awards no grade.
Quality, purity and germination, where the rules require them, belong on the label for that grade. If the page never shows them, you are buying the species, the grams, and the seller's other words. Read the paper packet in daylight and keep it.
The description and your rights
Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says that goods must match the description the seller gives. On a seed listing that includes the weight, the count, the area, the variety, the words white and organic, a phrase such as "covers 25 square metres", and a Defra number if the seller prints it. A star rating is other people's experience. Your bag is described by the words on its listing and on its label.
A misnamed species becomes clear when the plants grow. Weight is faster to check. Germination is the slowest, and a fortnight of bare, unwatered soil is a weak test of the packet. Several reviewers in the captured clover file report seed leaking from the Pronto box. Photograph the split before you sweep it up.
A remedy still depends on the facts, the timing, and whether you bought as a consumer. The £62.98 and £3.40 figures are from the captured amazon.co.uk files, in GBP. Check the live page. A qualifying purchase through our link can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Seed you will market onwards needs the GOV.UK certification route, which a lawn listing is too thin to prove.
Vegetable packets and fodder packets
White, red and Alsike clover are fodder species on Schedule 1. A cucumber packet that refers to GB rules and standards is using a vegetable-schedule note. Pasting that sentence onto a clover title invents a label the clover page does not have. Our cucumber seeds comparison keeps greenhouse types and outdoor ridge types apart so the packet and the sowing date stay paired.
The RHS sowing guidance uses about 2 g per square metre for pure wildflower seed and about 5 g per square metre when grass is in the mix. Those guides stand in for the gram line only if you have lost the packet. They do not certify a species list the seller left off the page. Use the packet rate when you have it, and the RHS figures as a sense-check when the listing's own area lines conflict.
The Weeds Act 1959 lists specified injurious weeds. Clover is outside that list. It can still be the wrong plant if you wanted fine fescue, or if the wear will be a weekly game of football. On sowing day the paper packet is the copy that matters. A listing that withholds the species or the grams is asking you to buy the photograph.
