How to fit plasterboard plugs without spinning the hole

Updated: 22 October 2026

The plug is chosen and you are about to drill a finished wall. The usual failures are hammer mode, a hole a size too big, and a screw driven until the gypsum powders. This is the fitting sequence for the plugs in the [plasterboard wall plug comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/plasterboard-wall-plug), using the hole sizes those listings state. This was not a laboratory fitting. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If you are still choosing, use the [plasterboard fixings buying guide](/hub/screws-and-accessories/plasterboard-wall-plug/sub/plasterboard-wall-plug-buying-guide) first.

Before you drill

A cable detector is a hint, not a guarantee, especially near sockets. If a pilot finds timber, a screw into that stud is stronger than a plug. Hammer action stays off. Wavanta states 8 mm, DuoTec 10 mm, and Gripit a 25 mm bit that is in the box, for 9.5–15 mm board. PlasPlugs’ 50-pack puts the size on a gauge. PEAPIN’s bullet says 10 mm and a review says 8 mm.

Nylon hollow plugs and butterfly plugs

For a winged nylon plug or a butterfly, drill the stated hole, clear the dust, push the plug flush, tighten until the back opens, then stop. Keep turning and the gypsum crushes into a crater. Wavanta is the 8 mm example. UK reviews call the supplied screw thin and say it fails when the fitting is thicker than about 6–7 mm. Take your own screw if the bracket has depth. PlasPlugs’ 50-pack asks you to use the gauge and the depth poker. PEAPIN is the caution: if the screw is too short, the wings never pull up and the collar spins. A try on scrap 12.5 mm board reported about half failed. On a finished wall, a spun plug means a larger repair.

Self-drilling metal anchors

Lemiyoo, Soyoyora, Weniubit and NEBURORA claim no pre-drill. Keep hammer off, and stop if the tip hits a stud. UK reviews say a pilot helps when the tip snaps, and a light tap is not hammer-drilling. If the tip snaps, that hole is finished. Lemiyoo reviewers say the supplied screw spins the anchor, so they fit a smaller screw. British Gypsum’s self-drive row is 6 kg in a single layer. Weniubit’s 20 kg bullet is not that row. Reading those kilograms is on how much weight plasterboard can hold.

Toggles, metal sleeves and the Gripit cam

DuoTec needs room for the toggle to pass a 10 mm hole and open. The box is plugs only. If the cavity is too narrow, the toggle never clears, and a screw that misses the toggle only spins. JASOLYI is an M4 × 38 mm sleeve for about 10–16 mm board. The drill diameter is not in the raw text, so measure the sleeve. One of ten reviews says five sleeves snapped. Gripit uses the 25 mm bit in the pack, and a review says the wings need a large flat screwdriver. The caution excludes full-motion brackets. Which card to buy is on the best plasterboard fixings page.

When to stop and drill a fresh hole

Stop when the plug spins or dust keeps falling. Fill the hole and move to sound board at the stated diameter. Change a thin screw rather than drilling bigger. If the load has to reach the block on dot and dab, none of these sequences is the bridge. A basin or a boiler is where a competent person should take over.

Common questions

What size hole does a plasterboard plug need?
The size on the listing you bought. Wavanta states 8 mm, fischer DuoTec states 10 mm, and Gripit states 25 mm with the flat bit in the box. PlasPlugs’ hollow pack uses a gauge. PEAPIN’s bullet says 10 mm and a review records advice of 8 mm, so that card is not a clean answer.
Can I use hammer action on plasterboard?
No. Hammer action and a masonry bit break the paper face and powder the core. Use a sharp twist bit, or the flat bit in the pack, at a modest speed with hammer mode off. A light tap to start a self-drill point is not drilling the board on hammer.
How do I stop a self-drilling anchor snapping or spinning?
Start square, keep the speed low, and stop if the tip hits a stud. UK reviews say a small pilot helps when the tip is brittle, even where the bullet claims no pre-drill. If the supplied screw spins the anchor, as on Lemiyoo, use a smaller screw. A snapped tip means a new hole.
How does a DuoTec toggle go in?
Drill the 10 mm hole, pass the folded toggle through, and let it open before you pull it back and tighten your own screw. The box does not include screws. If the cavity is too shallow the toggle cannot open. A screw that misses the toggle hole spins without drawing the fixing up.
What is different about fitting a Gripit?
Drill a 25 mm hole with the flat bit in the pack, seat the cam, and twist the wings out. A review says that twist needs a large flat screwdriver. The fixing is for 9.5 mm to 15 mm board. The load caution is shear with the object flat to the wall, and it sets aside full-motion brackets.
What if the plug spins in the hole?
Stop. More torque usually enlarges the hole. On Wavanta and PEAPIN the supplied screw is often too fierce or too short. On a self-drill the anchor often turns with the screw. Fill the hole and move to sound board. If the board is crumbly across the area, repair it before another plug will hold.
