How much weight can plasterboard hold?

Updated: 22 October 2026

The kilogram on the packet is useless until you know the direction, the board thickness, and whether the listing excludes your bracket. This page uses British Gypsum’s safe working loads and the maker tables behind two cards in the [plasterboard wall plug comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/plasterboard-wall-plug). These fixings were not load-tested in a laboratory. Prices are amazon.co.uk extracts from 19 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Choosing the type first is the [plasterboard fixings buying guide](/hub/screws-and-accessories/plasterboard-wall-plug/sub/plasterboard-wall-plug-buying-guide).

Three ways a load pulls on a fixing

Shear hangs flat on a vertical wall. Tension pulls straight out, as a ceiling fitting does. A cantilever adds turning. Gripit’s sheet for the blue fixing on 15 mm board prints 113 kg in shear, 20 kg in tension, then 40 kg at 50 mm, 31 kg at 75 mm and 25 kg at 150 mm. The minimum board is 9.5 mm. The listing’s 113 kg line is that shear case, object flat to the wall, and it excludes cantilever and full-motion brackets.

British Gypsum’s rows, and the bullets that are not those rows

British Gypsum gives a metal self-drive 6 kg in a single layer and 8 kg in a double layer. A steel expanding example is 12 kg for an M5 × 40 up to 12.5 mm, or 18 kg for an M5 × 65 from 15 mm to 28 mm. Factors are 4 for steel and 7 for plastic, so a failure load is not the hanging figure. Most self-drill boxes here print no kilogram. Weniubit, about £8.99, bullets up to 20 kg, which is the seller’s line, not the 6 kg row and not DuoBlade. DuoBlade is not in this set. PlasPlugs, Wavanta, PEAPIN and NEBURORA print no kilogram.

What Gripit and DuoTec actually publish

Use Gripit’s 113 kg only as shear on 15 mm board, object flat to the wall, not a cantilever or full-motion bracket. The maker sheet adds 20 kg in tension. Six fixings are not six times 113 kg. fischer DuoTec 10 does not print its table on the card. At a 625 mm span that table is about 17 kg in 9.5 mm board and about 20 kg in 12.5 mm, for tension, shear and oblique load. The higher 120 mm-span row is wrong for one toggle in a stud bay. The box is plugs only. Named picks are on the best plasterboard fixings page.

When the stud or the frame should carry it

British Gypsum puts basins, cupboards and serious shelving on the frame or a channel, not on a plug in the field of the board. A kitchen run or a boiler is the point to fix into the structure. DuoTec and Gripit do not bridge adhesive dabs into the block. That gap is on the dot and dab wall fixing page.

Which kilogram to use

Use 113 kg only as Gripit shear on 15 mm board with the object flat to the wall. Use about 20 kg for DuoTec in 12.5 mm board at a 625 mm span. Use 6 kg for a metal self-drive in a single layer when the card prints no kilogram. Put a basin, a cupboard or a serious shelf on the frame.

Common questions

What is the difference between shear, tension and cantilever?
Shear is the downward load with the object flat on a vertical wall. Tension pulls the fixing straight out, which is the ceiling case. A cantilever holds weight away from the wall. On 15 mm board Gripit prints 113 kg shear, 20 kg tension, and a cantilever line from 40 kg at 50 mm to 25 kg at 150 mm.
How much can one self-drill hold?
British Gypsum’s metal self-drive row is 6 kg safe working load in a single layer and 8 kg in a double layer. Use that when the card prints no kilogram. Weniubit’s up to 20 kg bullet is the seller’s figure, not that row and not DuoBlade. DuoBlade is a different product and it is not in this comparison. Pictures sit in the light band.
What does 113 kg on Gripit mean?
On the listing, 113 kg is maximum shear on 15 mm plasterboard with the object flat against a vertical wall. It excludes cantilever brackets and full-motion arms. The maker sheet puts the same blue size at 20 kg in tension. Thinner board reduces the figure, down to a stated minimum of 9.5 mm.
What load does DuoTec 10 quote for 12.5 mm board?
About 0.20 kN, roughly 20 kg, at a 625 mm span, for tension, shear and oblique load, with Fischer’s safety factors in the table. The 9.5 mm row is about 0.17 kN, roughly 17 kg. The 0.36 kN figure is the 120 mm span, the wrong row for one toggle in a stud bay. The box does not print the table and does not include screws.
Can I multiply one fixing’s load by the number of screws?
Not as a simple sum. The board, the stud spacing and the weakest point still limit the assembly. Gripit’s six-pack does not become six times 113 kg. DuoTec’s 625 mm row already assumes a wide spacing. Closer fixings can move you to a different row.
Are kitchen cabinets and basins a plug job?
No. British Gypsum points basins, cupboards and serious shelving at the frame or a channel. Gripit and DuoTec are the wrong place to carry a basin, a grab rail or a kitchen run. A flush light fitting on a sound stud wall can be a plug job if the direction matches. On dot and dab, a television usually needs a bridge into the block.
