Plasterboard fixings buying guide: wall first, then the load

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are standing in front of a stud wall with a mirror, a curtain pole or a short shelf, and the amazon.co.uk grid is sorted by piece count. This plasterboard fixings buying guide uses a different order. Name the wall, name the way the weight pulls, then match the mechanism and the packet. The eleven cards, priced in GBP on 19 October 2026, are on the [plasterboard wall plug comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/plasterboard-wall-plug). Products Compared read those listings and the public load notes below. This is not a laboratory pull-out test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Name the wall first

A plasterboard plug needs a cavity so the wings, toggle or cam can open. On a stud wall the centres are usually about 600 mm apart. If the drill hits timber, screw into the stud. Dot and dab sticks the board to masonry, and a heavy load often has to reach the block. That decision is on the dot and dab wall fixing page. Fischer’s DDF and Corefix Connect are not in these eleven listings. The PlasPlugs 52-piece assortment at about £4.22 mixes brick and board, so it is not one hole size.

Name the load direction

Shear sits flat on a vertical wall. Tension pulls straight out, as a ceiling fitting does. A cantilever shelf or arm also has to resist turning, and that gets harder as the load moves off the face. British Gypsum’s table gives a metal self-drive 6 kg in a single layer and 8 kg in a double layer. A steel expanding example is 12 kg for an M5 × 40 up to 12.5 mm, or 18 kg for an M5 × 65 from 15 mm to 28 mm. Factors are 4 for steel and 7 for plastic, so a failure kilogram is not a shelf rating. Basins and cupboards go to the frame. Weniubit’s 20 kg bullet is the seller’s line, not the 6 kg row. The split is on how much weight plasterboard can hold.

Match the mechanism to the job

A metal self-drill is the light option for a picture or a very light rail. NEBURORA’s 3.8 from 22 reviews is the weakest line, and UK text would not trust it past a picture. Winged nylon plugs need a drilled hole: Wavanta states 8 mm, while PEAPIN’s bullet and a review disagree between 10 mm and 8 mm. A toggle or a cam is the step up. Who should buy which is the best plasterboard fixings page.

Read the pack before the stars

Gripit states a 25 mm bit and screws. DuoTec is plugs only. PlasPlugs’ 50-pack leaves the drill size on a gauge and does not put screws in the title. Lemiyoo’s 70 pieces counts the screws as well as the anchors. Gripit and DuoTec are both 4.6, so stars do not choose between them. Prices from about £3.99 to £6.99 on 19 October 2026 mostly buy quantity. If the board is damp, or you cannot tell stud from dab from solid, stop.

Which type to open

If the bay is hollow and the object is a picture or a very light rail, use a self-drill or a winged nylon plug. If you need a published figure, open a toggle or a cam and read the direction of the load. If you can hit a stud, or the fitting is a basin, a cupboard or a long shelf, fix into the frame.

Common questions

How do I tell a stud wall from dot and dab?
Tap the board. A stud partition sounds hollow between regular centres, and a pilot will hit timber or metal there. Dot and dab sounds hollow too, but the solid spots are adhesive on masonry, and the gap is often uneven. If you are not sure, do not buy a short board-only plug for a television or a radiator.
Does the direction of the load change the plug?
Yes. A flush object on a vertical wall is mostly shear. A ceiling pull is tension. A shelf or a swing arm is a cantilever, and the same fixing is weaker as the load moves away from the wall. Gripit’s 113 kg line is shear on 15 mm board with the object flat to the wall.
When is a self-drilling metal anchor enough?
It is enough for a light fix on sound plasterboard, around British Gypsum’s 6 kg safe working load for a metal self-drive in a single layer, or 8 kg in a double layer. Pictures and very light rails are that job. A seller line of 20 kg is not that table.
Are ordinary masonry plugs right for plasterboard?
No. A masonry plug needs a solid hole in brick or block so it can expand against the sides. In hollow plasterboard the screw spins or pulls the plug through. Use a hollow plug, toggle or cam for the cavity. The PlasPlugs multi-size assortment claims brick and hollow board, but it is not one stated hole.
Should I buy the biggest pack or the highest stars?
Neither, until the wall and the load direction are settled. A large pack at about £4 to £7 buys piece count. Gripit and DuoTec share a 4.6 star line and still solve different jobs. Stars are satisfaction, not a kilogram for your bracket.
When should the screw go into a stud instead?
When you can hit the stud, and when the fitting is a basin, a wall cupboard, a grab rail or a long shelf that British Gypsum would put on the frame. A plug is for a lighter object in the bay you missed. If the board is damp or the wall type is unknown, stop rather than buy a larger pack.
