Wall anchor or ground anchor: substrate before brand

Updated: 22 October 2026

A block-paved drive, a timber shed wall or a proud loop in the walkway is not the neat concrete in the product photo. Choosing a wall anchor or a ground anchor is about whether the material stays put under leverage, and whether the loop becomes a trip hazard. This page is surfaces and placement for the nine bolt-down rows on the [floor anchor comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/floor-anchor). It notes which listings allow a wall or a floor. It does not re-score the nine prices.

Floor, wall, or set in concrete

Three ideas get mixed on amazon.co.uk. Bolt-down anchors, every row in this set, use expansion fixings and often one-way bolts in existing masonry. Concrete-in anchors are cast into wet concrete. UK guides treat that pour as the stronger ground type when it is possible, and no concrete-in ASIN is in this nine. A wall fix is still bolt-down. A new garage floor, with the builder still on site, may never need this basket. Floor versus wall changes the chain run and the trip risk. It does not change the Sold Secure grade.

Concrete and brick that are worth drilling

Sound in-situ concrete, solid brick and block are what these bolts assume. Third-party guides sometimes cite roughly 10 cm of concrete as a thinking tool. The manufacturer sheet overrides that when it specifies depth. Paving slabs, block paving on sand and thin screeds fail after the hole succeeds, because the weak layer lifts. Timber shed frames need wood pull-out fixings. The sleeves in this set are not that product. Oxford’s AnchorForce-family wording, used as a limit and not a score, says bolt-down strength depends on the floor or wall. A Gold plate in a slab on the drive is still a weak system.

When a wall is the better place

A sound wall can keep chain slack off the ground and move a proud shackle out of a walk line, if you have permission to drill. A thin single-skin wall is worse than a thick floor pad. Wall or floor in this set: the GA1, ABUS WBA 75, ARTAGO 61, Task Force, Oxford Brute Force, FD-Moto and ViPER. The £37.99 bike kit and the £52.99 motorbike kit are marketed as ground kits. Wall use there is not a spec line. A loop that stands up catches feet and tyres. If you must drive across the spot, choose fold-flat before you buy.

The spot you have to drive over

Task Force is the listing that lets the shackle lie flat so you can drive over it when the bike is not locked there. That is not a trick for a proud loop after fitting. Fold-flat still needs masonry under the plate, and it still needs a rated chain when the bike is stored. The hole sequence is on how to fit a floor anchor. If you have neither sound masonry nor a fold-flat row, fix the surface plan first. The floor anchor buying guide still assumes you eventually drill something solid.

Common questions

Is a wall weaker than a concrete floor?
It depends on the wall. Thick block can be excellent. A thin or loose skin is worse than a good floor pad. Judge the material, not the orientation on the listing.
Can I bolt into paving slabs or block paving?
Not for security. Guides call slabs liftable. A tight bolt does not bond the slab to the ground.
Can I use a timber shed wall?
Not with these masonry bolts as a security fix. Use timber-rated hardware, or change the substrate. A plate on a stud can leave with the panel.
What if the anchor sticks up where I walk or drive?
Choose fold-flat before you buy. In this set that is Task Force, which says you can drive over the flat shackle. Or use a wall away from traffic. Do not flatten a proud shackle after fitting.
Which of these anchors say they can go on a wall?
The GA1, ABUS WBA 75, ARTAGO, Task Force, Brute Force, FD-Moto and ViPER state wall or floor. The two Burg-Wächter kits do not. They are marketed as ground kits.
Is bolt-down as strong as one set in concrete?
Concrete-in is often cited as stronger when it is poured correctly. This comparison is bolt-down only. Existing in-situ concrete can still be suitable if the sheet’s depth is met.
Do I need the landlord’s permission?
Yes, in a rented or shared building. Bearings make the fix hard to reverse. Ask before you drill.
Where do the actual drilling steps live?
On the how-to-fit page, after you accept the surface. That page covers the sheet, the sleeves and the bearings.
