Ground anchor buying guide: grade, surface, then price

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want a fixed point in a garage or shed that a chain cannot be lifted away from. Amazon.co.uk mixes anchors near £14, an £88 Gold row, and kits that put a chain in the same box. This ground anchor buying guide keeps one order: the Sold Secure family for your machine, the surface you can drill, the chain that must pass the loop, and only then the price. The nine bolt-down listings are on the [floor anchor comparison](/hub/screws-and-accessories/floor-anchor). Figures are GBP shelf prices from 19 October 2026, not a security lab test.

What you are locking

Sold Secure runs two scales that look similar on a bullet and are not interchangeable. Pedal cycle covers ordinary bicycles. Powered cycle covers motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and e-bikes. On the pedal scale, Diamond is the top grade. On the powered scale, Diamond sits above Gold. Pedal Cycle Diamond is equivalent to Powered Cycle Gold. It is not equivalent to Powered Cycle Diamond. If the machine has a motor, or the policy names Powered Cycle, read the powered-cycle row, not a Diamond word on a bicycle kit. The Burg-Wächter 1 m bike kit’s Diamond marketing is not a confirmed Powered Cycle Diamond. The map for these nine rows is on floor anchor for a motorcycle.

What the anchor has to pass through

A ground anchor is only the immovable half of the lock-up. The chain or U-lock still has to fit the opening. Oxford Brute Force names a 12 mm chain, ARTAGO 61 names 15 mm, and Task Force names 16 mm. The GA1, the ABUS Granit WBA 75, ViPER, FD-Moto and several other bare rows do not state a maximum, so you match the lock you own to the loop. Bare anchor versus kit is the next fork. The GA1 at £17.66 is Powered Cycle Gold and arrives without a chain or padlock. The Burg-Wächter kits cost £37.99 for a 1 m chain of 10 mm and £52.99 for a motorbike chain of 12 mm, because the steel and the locks are in the carton. Brute Force at £14.56 is Silver on the powered-cycle scale, so a low price can mean a lower grade, not a hidden bargain.

What it will be bolted to

Every anchor in this comparison is bolt-down. Sleeves, bolts and often one-way ball bearings assume sound concrete, solid brick or block. A paving slab, block paving on sand, a thin screed or a timber shed stud is not that material. The plate can stay put while the bike leaves. If that is the only free surface, read concrete floor or wall before you buy hardware meant for masonry. GA1, ABUS WBA 75, ARTAGO, Task Force, Brute Force, FD-Moto and ViPER state wall or floor. The two kits are sold as ground kits. Orientation does not change the grade. A proud loop on a walkway is a trip hazard unless the shackle folds flat. Task Force is the listing that lets the shackle lie flat so you can drive over it. That is placement, not a substitute for thick concrete.

How the nine prices sit

With family, surface and chain settled, this scrape runs from about £13.45 to £88. Price does not sort the grade. The GA1 at £17.66 carries Powered Cycle Gold. Brute Force at £14.56 is Silver only. FD-Moto has no Sold Secure claim here. ARTAGO 61 at £88 is Powered Cycle Gold with a stated 15 mm opening. That is not automatically better than the ABUS WBA 75 at £49.19, also Gold, with a 14 mm bracket. Concrete-in anchors are not one of these nine ASINs. One conditional name inside the nine is on best floor anchor in this set. This guide does not crown a winner.

Common questions

What should I decide before I look at brands?
Name the Sold Secure family, pedal versus powered, confirm you have masonry worth drilling, and decide whether the chain is already owned. Then open the main table. Skipping straight to the cheapest four-star row is how Silver and unclaimed anchors enter the basket.
Is a higher price a higher Sold Secure grade in this set?
No. The GA1 is Gold at £17.66, Brute Force is Silver at £14.56, and ARTAGO is Gold at £88. Stars on FD-Moto do not replace a certificate line.
Do I need the chain in the same box?
Only if you want one delivery. You need a rated chain either way. The kits at £37.99 and £52.99 bundle a chain and locks. Bare Gold anchors do not.
What chain diameters do these listings actually state?
Brute Force states 12 mm, ARTAGO states 15 mm, and Task Force states 16 mm. The other rows in the nine do not print a maximum. Plan from your lock, not from a guess.
Which rows have no Sold Secure claim?
ViPER and FD-Moto show no approval in the data behind this comparison. Treat them as ungraded unless you verify a certificate yourself. A high star average on those listings does not fill the gap.
Will any ground anchor satisfy my insurer?
Not automatically. Insurers such as ETA publish immovable-object advice for bicycles, but motorcycle policies are contractual. Ask which Powered Cycle grade they require before you drill.
Is a concrete-in anchor in this comparison?
No. This set is bolt-down only. Anchors that are cast into wet concrete are a different shortlist. If the floor is still to be poured, this nine-row table is the wrong basket.
What should I read next if the machine is a motorcycle or e-bike?
Start with the motorcycle page for Gold versus Diamond, then return to the main comparison for prices.
