Sandpaper roll buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are clamping a fresh sheet onto a half-sheet sander for a panel door, and the rolls on amazon.co.uk split on width before they split on grit. A sandpaper roll buying guide is worth using only when that width check comes first, then one grit or a set, then paper or cloth. This page follows that order for the twelve listings in our [sandpaper roll comparison](/hub/sanders/sandpaper-roll). Peter F. read those listings on 19 October 2026. There was no lab test. Match the width to the pad

The pad sets the width, and the roll will not stretch to suit it. Trade sellers treat 115 mm as the half-sheet size once you cut a length. Rodo states that width for ProDec machine-sander rolls, and Faithfull sells 115 mm aluminium oxide the same way. A line that says the roll fits with no trimming is still a seller’s claim. Measure the face between the clamps, including the paper the jaws bite. Most mixed boxes here are titled at 93 mm. On a full half-sheet pad that leaves a bare stripe. A 115 mm roll on a narrower block means you trim every length. The 70 mm peel-and-stick roll and 25 mm cloth are for a block or a curve, not a door. When the width matches, take the printed number to the sandpaper grit chart.

One grit or a mixed set

When the job is one stage, buy one grit on 115 mm paper. The ProDec rolls here are all 5 m by 115 mm aluminium oxide, captured on 19 October 2026: yellow 80 at £4.60, green 60 at £5.09, green 80 at £6.49, and green 120 at £7.16. ProDec puts 60 on rough timber and old coatings, 80 on varnish and bare wood before paint, and 120 before a first coat, not for stripping. A mixed set suits you when you will use several grades and you have accepted about 93 mm. WORKPRO was £12.07, SHALL £13.89, and KONGMING’s cloth set from 40 grit was £16.99. SHALL is titled at 93 mm, though one bullet says 9.3 mm. KONGMING is cloth, so it is not a straight swap for ProDec paper. Skipping from 60 to 240 leaves coarse scratches.

Backing, water, and listing conflicts

Paper is what you clamp to a sheet sander. ProDec calls its paper crack-resistant, though some UK reviews still report splits when it is folded hard into the clamps. Cloth flexes on a curve, which is why Flintronic, Junchamp, and KONGMING are a different buy from a flat 115 mm roll. The GZKTY roll is a 240 grit peel-and-stick strip. That trade-off sits on the paper or cloth sandpaper roll page. Aluminium oxide suits bare wood, varnish, and ordinary decorating. Silicon carbide wet-and-dry paper is a different sheet. If the title says wet and dry on an aluminium oxide roll, use water only where the listing says the sheet can take it. Do not dry-sand paint that may contain lead, still used in UK homes into the early 1980s. When the title and the bullets disagree, follow the title. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects the goods to match the description.

What you will pay on amazon.co.uk

The entry band, about £4.60 to £8, is one 5 m by 115 mm ProDec roll. The mid band, about £12 to £17, covers the mixed 93 mm sets, Shineboc at £12.99, Flintronic at £12.89, and the GZKTY roll at £14.99. Junchamp is £17.99 and PMIQSA is £19.99. A Wickes ProDec 80 grit ticket around £11 is another shelf, not this amazon.co.uk capture. Compare price per metre only at the same width. Shineboc’s title is one 60 grit roll, 93 mm by 10 m. Bullets that name more grits can describe the seller’s range, not this parcel. WORKPRO’s 4.6 from 1,011 ratings is a larger file than PMIQSA’s 4.9 from 24. Up to 10 times longer is ProDec maker copy, including Rodo’s wording, not a measured result.

Common questions

Is 115 mm or 93 mm the roll for my sander?
Measure the sanding face between the clamps before you trust the title. A 93 mm title does not fill a full half-sheet pad, and it is not a fit for every DeWalt. The 70 mm peel-and-stick roll and the 25 mm cloth rolls are for a block or a curve, not for that door.
Should I buy one grit or a 60-to-240 set?
Buy one grit when the job is a single stage on a 115 mm pad. Buy a mixed box near 93 mm when you will use several grades and you have checked the width. Skipping from 60 to 240 leaves the coarse scratches under the finish. KONGMING is cloth, so it is not a straight swap for a ProDec paper roll.
Is aluminium oxide the right grain for wood and paint?
For bare wood, varnish, and ordinary decorating, aluminium oxide is the grain on almost every roll here, including ProDec. Look for silicon carbide when you need a true wet-and-dry sheet. If the paint may contain lead, do not dry-sand it. Lead pigments were still used in UK homes into the early 1980s.
What does a 5 m roll cost compared with a mixed box?
In the 19 October 2026 capture a single 5 m by 115 mm ProDec roll was about £4.60 to £7.16, and a mixed box near 93 mm was about £12 to £17, or £19.99 for PMIQSA. The single roll is wider and one grit. The box splits its length across grades. Compare a price per metre only when width and backing match.
Can I trust wet and dry on the title?
Trust that phrase when the listing says the sheet is for use with water. Here the grain is aluminium oxide, and wet and dry on that grain is not silicon carbide waterproof paper. Use water only where the product text says so. Paper sold for dry sanding can fall apart once soaked. When the title and the bullets disagree, read the title before you wet the sheet.
Why do some listings show one grit in the title and many in the bullets?
The title is what you add to the basket. Shineboc is titled as one 60 grit roll, 93 mm by 10 m, at £12.99. Bullets that name further grits can be the seller’s range, not several grits in that parcel. SHALL is titled at 93 mm, and one bullet says 9.3 mm. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects the goods to match the description.
Is the 10 times longer line a test?
No. Up to 10 times longer is maker copy on the ProDec range, the claim Rodo repeats for the green rolls. Nothing in this comparison is a wear test, and a star rating is not one either. A 4.6 from several hundred ratings is a broader record than a 4.9 from 24 ratings. Judge the roll by width, grit, and whether the title matches the bullets.
