Mesh sanding discs: what to match before you buy

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already own a hook-and-loop random orbital sander, or a hand block, and you are about to order mesh sanding discs for the first time. The boxes look alike until the diameter, the grit field and the grain line disagree with the title. Match the pad, then the shape, then a grit sequence the listing actually itemises, then the grain name, then the price. The [sanding mesh comparison](/hub/sanders/sanding-mesh) tables the packs captured on amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. This page does not pick a winner. It keeps a 150 mm disc off a 125 mm pad. Peter F. did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Match the pad before the grit

Measure the pad, then buy that diameter. A 125 mm disc belongs on a 125 mm hook-and-loop pad. A 150 mm disc belongs on a 150 mm pad only. A larger disc overhangs, and a smaller disc leaves a bare ring. The disc will not stick to a PSA pad. On the Ruidawin box the diameter is 125 mm, while a length field says 125 × 125 cm. Use the millimetre figure.

Disc, sheet or roll

Round discs are for an orbital sander. Sheets are for a block. A roll is a cut length, not a round disc. The ProDec Advance roll is 5 m × 115 mm, 120 grit, at about £4.99, and it will not stay on a hook-and-loop pad. The S&R sheets are 280 × 93 mm and the block is listed at 80 × 230 mm. Gerlon’s three meshes are 70 × 125 mm at 180 grit, about £4.82, for that maker’s shim. Open mesh against punched paper sits on mesh sandpaper vs sandpaper.

Read the grit line twice

A useful first box steps from about P80 through P240, unless you need one grade. Read the title and the grit-number field together. Pihemum’s 60-piece 150 mm pack at £24.99 lists 80 to 400 in the title, while the grit field says 80, with no count per grit. SI FANG’s bullets say 50 pieces of 80 grit at £15.99, while one UK review describes a mixed title. KQCXIK’s highlight lists 60 to 240 and the grit field says 240. NuoDunco itemises 10 each of 80, 120, 180 and 240, and 5 each of 320 and 400, at £10.99, with no review line. Where the fields disagree, the single number is the risk.

Grain is a name, not a life test

Aluminium oxide is Norton’s usual grain for wood, paint and high-tensile metal, and it is the name on most cheaper mixed boxes here. The S&R sheets and the 6 m roll at 240 grit, about £13.99, name silicon carbide. Norton’s claim of up to three times the life is Norton’s own ceramic test, not a result for the KQCXIK discs at £21.99. None of these listings print a lab test, UKCA or EN 13743.

What the amazon.co.uk packs cost

The bands are from the 19 October 2026 capture, not a ranking. Entry is about £4.82 to £4.99: Gerlon’s three meshes or the ProDec roll. Mid is about £10.99 to £15.99 for mixed 125 mm packs, roughly £0.22 to £0.32 a disc. NuoDunco is the best value row on shelf price, and it has no review line. Upper runs to Pihemum’s 150 mm mix at £24.99. Protrade’s 3M Xtract Cubitron II 710W 125 mm net discs are about £30.37 excluding VAT for 50, a trade ceiling rather than an amazon.co.uk price. Fitting is in how to use mesh sanding discs. The shortlist is best mesh sanding discs.

Common questions

Do I buy 125 mm or 150 mm mesh sanding discs?
Buy the diameter of the pad you already own. A 125 mm disc matches a 125 mm hook-and-loop pad. A 150 mm disc matches a 150 mm pad only. In the 19 October 2026 capture, mixed 125 mm boxes of 50 to 60 discs were about £10.99 to £15.99, and the 60-piece 150 mm mix was £24.99. A larger disc overhangs a smaller pad.
Is a mixed box better than fifty discs of one grit?
A mix is the better first buy when the listing states how many of each grit are in the box. NuoDunco states 10 each of 80, 120, 180 and 240 and 5 each of 320 and 400. Fifty discs of one grit suit you when you already know the grade. If the grit field says only 80 while the title says 80 to 400, that is not a saving.
Can I use a 5 m sanding mesh roll on a round sander?
A 5 m roll suits a hand block or a sander that takes a cut sheet. It is the wrong shape for a round hook-and-loop pad. The ProDec Advance roll here is 5 m × 115 mm at 120 grit, about £4.99. If the sander is round, order discs in the pad diameter.
Why do the grit number and the title disagree?
The grit-number field is often a single value, while the title lists a range. Pihemum’s title lists 80 to 400 and the field says 80. KQCXIK’s highlight lists 60 to 240 and the field says 240. If the lines disagree, do not invent a split the listing never printed.
Is an £11 pack the same job as a 3M net disc?
An £11 mix and a 3M Xtract net disc are not the same purchase. Protrade’s price for 3M Xtract Cubitron II 710W 125 mm net discs was about £30.37 excluding VAT for 50, a trade ceiling, not an amazon.co.uk shelf price. The £10.99 to £15.99 mixes can be a first box if the grit split is written out. They do not inherit 3M’s grain.
