Belt sander belt size: match the loop

Updated: 21 October 2026

The new belts arrived, the lever will not click, and the loop either flaps or will not go on at all. Belt sander belt size is width times length, and a near miss is still the wrong part. The Products Compared editorial team checked the sizes stored on the twelve packs in our [sanding belt comparison](/hub/sanders/sanding-belt). We did not open every UK sander manual, so the manual and the print on your old belt outrank a model name. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

How to read a belt size

The first number is the width. The second is the circumference, not a cut strip that double-counts the joint. Inch labels translate the metric size. Ur-Excellent prints 3x21in for 75 × 533 mm. Kozelo prints 1/2 × 18 inch for 13 × 457 mm. The size is often inked inside, next to the rotation arrow. If the ink has gone, roll the loop along a tape from a mark back to that mark, twice. Ordering Makita belts or Bosch belts without that pair is how 560 mm and 610 mm get swapped. Grit, once you know the pair, is the sanding belt buying guide.

Common handheld sizes

75 × 533 mm is Ur-Excellent, STEBRUAM, GEOGIEEW, Aucenix and Funnytek, the 3 × 21 inch loop when the listing says so. It is not 75 × 457 mm. If the old belt is about 457 mm long and 75 mm wide, none of these 533 mm rows will tension. STEBRUAM’s cloth-backed 10-pack is 100 × 560 mm at £15.99. NUTKIT is 100 × 610 mm, 12 belts of 80 grit, at £12.99. A millimetre of width is usually inside tracking range. Fifty millimetres of length is not.

File and narrow belts

13 × 457 mm is Kozelo, the STEBRUAM pack whose bullet names Black & Decker Powerfile sanders, and the unrated YUANLTDQIN 60-pack. Kozelo also writes 1/2 × 18 inch. A US review says the belts slip off a Powerfile. STEBRUAM’s title says 15 belts and a bullet says 60. That clash does not change the size. 10 × 330 mm is Shineboc and Sruhrak, also written 3/8 × 13 inch for air files. It is not the 9 × 533 mm loop one stored Shineboc review mentions for a Parkside. Sruhrak is the mixed zirconia pack. Shineboc is 30 belts of 240 grit only.

Example machines, and why the manual wins

We are not printing a Bosch or Makita fitment table. Variants do not all share a loop. A 75 mm handheld belongs in the 75 × 533 mm rows only when the manual says 533 mm. Power files are the 13 × 457 mm rows when the manual says that. Air files at 10 × 330 mm are Shineboc and Sruhrak. Bench loops such as 100 × 915 mm or 75 × 762 mm are not in this twelve-pack set. If the plate says one of those, or 75 × 457 mm, no row here will tension.

What a wrong size does

A short belt will not let the tension lever close. A long belt flaps or burns on the guard. A narrow belt walks off. A wide belt rubs the housing. Aucenix buyers with a correct 75 × 533 mm size still report a proud joint that thumps. That looks like a size fault and is not one. Kozelo slip, on a belt whose numbers match the bullet, is fit and joint. It is not a reason to try 10 × 330 mm because it is also narrow. Let the rollers cool, then follow the arrow on how to change a sanding belt.

Common questions

What size belt does a Bosch 75 mm sander take?
Check the plate or the worn belt. We are not stating a Bosch model table here. If that manual says 75 × 533 mm, that is the 3 × 21 inch family, and the Ur-Excellent, STEBRUAM, GEOGIEEW, Aucenix and Funnytek rows are the ones in this comparison. If it says 75 × 457 mm, none of those packs is the right length.
What belt fits a Makita 100 mm sander?
Again, the manual wins, because 100 mm machines in the wild use more than one length. In this set, 100 × 560 mm is the STEBRUAM 10-pack and 100 × 610 mm is the NUTKIT 12-pack of 80 grit. Measure the old loop before you choose. Fifty millimetres will not tension.
Can I use 100 × 560 mm instead of 100 × 610 mm?
No. The width is the same and the circumference is not. The tension range will not accept the shorter or the longer belt as a substitute. Buy the length printed on the old belt. Grit and cloth backing do not make up fifty millimetres.
How do I measure a sanding belt?
Measure the width across the abrasive. Measure the circumference by rolling the loop along a tape from a mark back to the same mark, twice. Read any ink left inside the belt first, because a worn joint can confuse the tape. Then match both numbers, not the width alone.
What size is a file-sander belt?
In this comparison, either 13 × 457 mm (1/2 × 18 inch on the Kozelo bullet) or 10 × 330 mm (3/8 × 13 inch on the Shineboc bullet). They are not interchangeable. A Black & Decker Powerfile is named on the STEBRUAM 13 × 457 mm bullet. Confirm your own manual before you treat that sentence as your model.
Why does a belt slip when it almost fits?
The tension lever never reaches its proper cam, so the belt creeps, or the width is narrow enough to walk off under load. Tracking adjustment cannot invent missing length. A proud joint, which Aucenix reviewers describe on a belt that is the right nominal size, thumps and can walk as well. Check the seam after you have checked the millimetres.
