Sanding belt buying guide for a UK belt sander

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are holding a glazed loop from last weekend’s door, and the amazon.co.uk results all look like the same brown ring. A sanding belt buying guide is useful only if it makes you confirm the size before you compare grit or price. The Products Compared editorial team lined up the twelve packs in our [sanding belt comparison](/hub/sanders/sanding-belt), using the listing fields and the review notes stored with them. We did not run a lab test, and we did not time how long a belt lasts on oak. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with belt size

Width times length is the whole order. A wrong length will not tension, and a belt a few millimetres narrow will wander. Handheld sizes here are 75 × 533 mm, 100 × 560 mm and 100 × 610 mm. Narrow loops are 10 × 330 mm or 13 × 457 mm. Read the print inside the old belt before the brand name. STEBRUAM’s cloth-backed pack is 100 × 560 mm at £15.99. NUTKIT is 100 × 610 mm of 80 grit at £12.99. Fifty millimetres of length stops the lever. The pairs are on the sanding belt size guide.

Grit and mixed packs

About P40 to P80 takes off paint ridges and saw marks. About P80 to P120 knocks the scratches back. About P120 to P180 moves you towards a hand or random-orbit finish. Ur-Excellent states four each of 80, 120 and 150 at £14.99, and leaves out the very coarse and the very fine. A single grit is the better buy when you already know the grade. NUTKIT is twelve belts of 80 only. Shineboc is thirty belts of 240 only, for a 10 × 330 mm file, not a starter kit. Count the grades in the title, then check the spec field. More is on the sanding belt grit guide.

Abrasive grain and backing

Aluminium oxide is the default here for wood and softer metal. Zirconia is on Shineboc and Sruhrak at 10 × 330 mm, and on Funnytek at 75 × 533 mm for £21.99. Ceramic is not named on any kept listing. Backing is mostly unstated. STEBRUAM’s 100 × 560 mm row says cloth-backed, open-coat aluminium oxide. Open coat clogs less on softwood and paint. Closed coat cuts harder and loads faster on resinous timber. Ur-Excellent claims an additive to resist loading, and a reviewer still says the belts clog. Cloth tolerates more pressure than paper.

Reading amazon.co.uk listings

The title, the bullets and the spec block often disagree. STEBRUAM’s 13 × 457 mm page says 15 belts in the title and 60 pieces in a bullet, and the grit field is blank. The 75 × 533 mm STEBRUAM row shares 4.6 from 9,614 and the same stored reviews, including a Ryobi, a DeWalt and a power file. Those lines are a poor description of a 75 mm loop. Funnytek at £21.99 is 5.0 from one review about power files. Aucenix at £8.49 draws complaints about a joint that thumps. Trade-counter singles are often about £3–£7, a benchmark rather than this amazon.co.uk shelf.

Dust and a safe minimum

HSE guidance on hand-held sanders expects on-tool extraction where you can arrange it, and respiratory protection of at least APF 20, such as a face-fit tested FFP3, for much indoor wood sanding. Keep eye protection on. Do not sand lead paint or a coating you cannot identify. Extraction does not fix a belt fitted backwards. One Ur-Excellent reviewer mentions the direction mark inside the loop. A proud joint, the Aucenix complaint, thumps once a revolution and marks a show face. Fit and tracking are on how to change a sanding belt.

Common questions

What size belt does my sander need?
Match the width and the length printed on the worn belt or in the manual. In this comparison, 75 × 533 mm, 100 × 560 mm and 100 × 610 mm are three different handheld loops, and 10 × 330 mm is not 13 × 457 mm. A close length still fails to tension. If the old print has gone, measure the cloth and then open only the matching rows on the main comparison.
Are mixed grit packs good value?
They are good value when you will use most of the grades, and poor value when you only ever fit 80 grit. Ur-Excellent states four each of 80, 120 and 150 at £14.99. Aucenix’s title lists a wider spread at £8.49, with blank spec fields and joint complaints. A single-grit box such as NUTKIT’s 80 grit pack is the clearer buy for one repeated job.
Should I buy aluminium oxide or zirconia?
Aluminium oxide is the grain most of these packs name for wood and general sanding. Zirconia is on the Shineboc and Sruhrak 10 × 330 mm listings, and on Funnytek’s £21.99 75 × 533 mm pack, which has a single review about power files. Zirconia is not automatically better on softwood. If the listing does not name the grain, do not invent one.
Will a 100 × 560 mm belt fit a 100 × 610 mm sander?
No. The width matches and the length does not, so the tension lever will not land in its normal range. STEBRUAM’s mixed pack is the 560 mm row. NUTKIT is the 610 mm row, and it is 80 grit only. Order the length printed on your old belt.
Do I need dust extraction indoors?
For regular wood sanding, yes where you can connect it. HSE guidance on hand-held sanders looks for on-tool extraction where practicable and a mask rated at least APF 20, such as FFP3, for much of this work. A short outdoor test on bare metal is a different exposure. Lead paint and unknown old coatings are not a DIY belt job.
