Orbital sander dust extraction

Updated: October 2026

Every corded sander in this set arrives with a photo of a clip-on tub or a fabric bag that makes indoor sanding look tidy. Orbital sander dust extraction with that attachment leaves fine wood dust in the room, and it is not the control in UK workplace guidance. Ports on the twelve listings are in the [orbital sander comparison](/hub/sanders/orbital-sander). Prices and review notes below are from those listings on 15 October 2026. This is not a lab test or a dust measurement. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the box does and does not do

The box or cloth bag on a corded sander at about £24 to £49 blows dust through the eight holes in a 125 mm pad. When the holes line up, it catches some heavier chips. Reviews for DESOON, both DKOS30XL125 pages, HYCHIKA, BLACK+DECKER and Bosch PEX 220 A report the same two failures: the box vibrates off, or fine dust blows past the filter. That fine fraction is the lung risk. HSE says hardwood and softwood dust can cause occupational asthma, and hardwood dust is a known cause of nasal cancer. Workplace exposure limits are 3 mg/m³ for hardwood and 5 mg/m³ for softwood, as eight-hour averages. Mixed dust, including MDF, uses 3 mg/m³. Those duties bind employers and the self-employed. The dust in a spare room is the same dust.

The extractor HSE names

HSE sheet WD7 says hand-held powered sanders should have on-tool extraction to a Class M or Class H unit, not an integral bag. Those units hold airflow, filter fine dust and warn if the hose blocks. Use a stepped adaptor or the maker’s coupling, not tape. Indoors, HSE construction guidance points to respiratory protection with an assigned protection factor of 20, such as a fitted FFP3, alongside extraction. Do not sweep dry wood dust back into the air. A domestic vacuum, even with a household HEPA filter, is not a Class M or Class H extractor. The holes only work if the disc is straight, which is how to use an orbital sander.

Ports on the sanders in this comparison

DESOON, both DKOS30XL125 pages, the DEKOPRO 3-in-1 and VeftBltrem claim a vacuum adaptor. Reviews on DEKOPRO and Enventor say extraction improves once a hose is attached. On MAXXT R7308, eight stored texts praise a workshop vacuum, and the 110 V line still needs a plate check. HYCHIKA FL117 ships with a fabric bag, and one review found no hose fitting. BLACK+DECKER BEW210-GB reviews say no adaptor is in the box. Bosch PEX 220 A lists the microfilter box, and reviewers criticise it. Plug and port checks are the orbital sander buying guide. Who each band suits is the best orbital sander page.

Old paint

HSE lead FAQs say lead paint was widely used on woodwork in buildings from before the 1980s. Do not dry-sand old paint that may contain lead, and do not use a blow lamp. A dust bag does not make that job safe. If the paint is sound, leave it and overpaint, or key it with wet paper by hand. Flaking suspect paint that must come back to bare timber is a job for a decorator set up for wet methods or chemical stripping. The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 set an action value of 2.5 m/s² A(8) and a limit of 5 m/s² A(8) for employers. These listings omit a declared figure. Tingling is not a dose. Switch off a sander that vibrates harshly.

Common questions

Is the dust box enough?
No. The plastic box or fabric bag traps part of the coarser sawdust and does not control fine breathable dust. UK reviews of budget sanders and of the Bosch PEX 220 A say boxes vibrate loose or fine dust escapes. HSE sheet WD7 says powered sanders need on-tool extraction connected to a Class M or Class H extractor.
Do I need a mask at home?
A properly fitted mask indoors is a sensible precaution. COSHH duties apply to employers and the self-employed, not to unpaid DIY. Wood dust from softwood, hardwood and MDF is the same irritant at home as on site. HSE woodworking guidance cites respiratory protection with an assigned protection factor of 20, such as a fitted disposable FFP3, when you sand indoors.
What is a Class M extractor?
A Class M dust extractor is a certified workshop unit for hazardous dusts with workplace exposure limits down to 0.1 mg/m³, which includes hardwood, softwood and MDF dust. Unlike an ordinary household vacuum, it monitors airflow, alarms if the hose clogs, and is built to capture at least 99.9% of fine dust without blowing it back into the room.
Can I dry-sand old paint?
Do not dry-sand old paint if the building dates from before the 1980s, or if the coating might contain lead. HSE says dry powered sanding turns lead paint into airborne dust, and neither a dust bag nor an ordinary mask makes that safe. Test suspect paint, leave sound old paint in place, or use a wet method or a professional removal.
Which sanders in this set take a hose?
DESOON at about £29.99, DEKOPRO DKOS30XL125 at about £27.99 and £30.99, and the DEKOPRO 3-in-1 at about £36.99 claim a vacuum adaptor in the bullets. Check that the coupling fits your hose. Stored UK reviews for HYCHIKA FL117 at about £26.99 and BLACK+DECKER BEW210-GB at about £30.95 say no vacuum adaptor was in the box.
Should I sweep afterwards?
No. HSE sheet WD7 says not to brush or dry-sweep wood dust after sanding, because sweeping puts the finest dust back into the air. Vacuum the workpiece, the bench and the floor with a suitable extractor, and wipe what remains with a damp cloth you can seal and bin.
