Concrete grinder vs angle grinder

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already own an angle grinder, and a concrete grinder vs angle grinder may be a real difference or only a longer title. For a small edge or patch it is enough with a diamond cup, a guard, a shroud, an M-class or H-class extractor, and respiratory protection of at least APF 20. A cutting disc or a flap disc is not enough. A dedicated listing here is the same skim, with cup and hood more often in one box. Neither replaces a walk-behind. The six handhelds are on the [concrete sander comparison](/hub/sanders/concrete-sander), captured on 19 October 2026. Peter F. did not run a noise or dust lab.

When an angle grinder is enough

An angle grinder can grind concrete with a diamond cup the tool may spin, the guard on, and a shroud close to the slab. HSE's control is the hood, an M-class or H-class unit, and a mask of at least APF 20, whichever name is on the carton. PWM Sales lists a 230 mm grinder, shroud, cup, and M-class extractor at £977 excluding VAT. That is a system price, not one of these amazon listings. A cutting disc cuts a slot. A flap disc blends metal. Tipping a cutting disc onto a slab, which is what crowded the amazon.co.uk results, cuts a groove. A missing cup and shroud are still a purchase.

What a concrete sander listing adds

A concrete sander listing in this set is a corded handheld with a diamond cup or wheel and a dust cover, sometimes with a long handle. Both MAXXT listings are about 125 mm. WUDLEP, LengSuaa, JAOGAUS, and YUCHENGTECH are about 180 mm. Several also sit in Amazon's angle-grinder browse. You are often buying the cup and the hood in one carton, not a different machine. None of the six includes an M-class extractor. A pole or extension rods change posture only. Bosch's cordless GBR 18V-15 S is outside this set and is not priced here. If you already have a guarded grinder, the cup and shroud can be the smaller step.

The shared limit

Dust control is the same for both bodies: hood on the concrete, M class or H class, mask left on, as set out on concrete grinder dust extraction. These handhelds suit edges and patches. A UK review of a 7 kg tool called about 30 square metres too much. PWM keeps handhelds for edges and walk-behinds for open floor. The Concrete Society lists diamond grinding alongside scarifying and shot blasting. Disc and plug checks are on the concrete sander buying guide. The pass is on how to use a concrete grinder. They skim. They do not drop a floor by a centimetre.

Which to choose

Use the angle grinder you own for a small edge or patch when you can fit a rated diamond cup and a shroud, and you will run M-class or H-class extraction with APF 20 protection. Buy a dedicated listing when you want the cup and the hood in one corded box. Hire a floor grinder for the open slab and keep the handheld for the perimeter. Do not choose either tool for a cutting disc, a flap disc, or a specified flatness. A higher watt claim does not make the dedicated tool safer.

Common questions

Can my angle grinder grind concrete if I change the disc?
Yes, for a small edge or patch, if you fit a diamond cup the tool may spin, keep the guard on, add a shroud, and use an M-class or H-class extractor with at least APF 20 respiratory protection. A cutting disc or a flap disc is the wrong part. On an open floor, both an angle grinder and a dedicated handheld are the wrong machine for the middle of the slab.
Should I use a cup or a cutting disc?
Use a diamond cup whose maximum speed is not below the tool's no-load speed. A cutting disc is for a slot, and tipping one onto a floor cuts a groove. A flap disc is for metal, not for skimming a slab. Read the shape. A disc that appears in a concrete search is often a cutter.
Do I still need a shroud on a concrete sander?
Yes. The shroud has to sit on the surface and connect to an extractor. The title does not put an M-class unit in the box, and none of the six listings includes one. HSE's control is the hood, the class of unit, and the mask, whether the motor is sold as a concrete sander or as an angle grinder.
Is a dedicated concrete grinder safer?
This page did not measure noise, and the product title is not a safety margin. A dedicated listing often includes the cup and a dust cover, which saves matching those parts yourself. Silica control is still the extractor and the mask. The area limit is the same class of handheld either way.
When do I need a floor machine instead?
Use a walk-behind when the work is the open slab, or when flatness is specified. About 30 square metres was already too much in one UK review of a 7 kg handheld. Scarifying or shot blasting may be the specified method instead of a cup. Keep the handheld for the perimeter the large machine cannot finish.
Is a cordless concrete grinder a third option?
Bosch lists the GBR 18V-15 S in the UK as a 125 mm cordless concrete grinder. It is not one of these six corded listings, and this page does not price it. Cordless does not remove the cup, the shroud, the extractor, or the mask. Check that model on its own if you already run a suitable battery system.
