Concrete grinder dust extraction

Updated: 21 October 2026

The dust shroud in the box is not the control. Concrete grinder dust extraction, in Great Britain, means an on-tool hood on an M-class or H-class extractor, a tight hose, and respiratory protection of at least APF 20. The vacuum does not catch every particle. The workplace exposure limit for respirable crystalline silica is 0.1 mg/m³ as an 8-hour average under EH40, a workplace limit rather than proof a short DIY job is harmless. The six listings are on the [concrete sander comparison](/hub/sanders/concrete-sander). Peter F. used HSE guidance and the 19 October 2026 amazon.co.uk capture. There was no lab dust measurement.

What concrete grinding puts in the air

Concrete, mortar, and many screeds contain crystalline silica. Grinding releases a fine fraction you can inhale. HSE says uncontrolled work can peak at about 1–2 mg/m³, many times the 0.1 mg/m³ 8-hour limit, and that faster discs make more dust. HSE describes silicosis as the long-term lung disease linked with this exposure. You do not need a visible cloud first. The coarse grit on the car is not the respirable part. US figures are not the Great Britain limit. How you move the tool is on how to use a concrete grinder.

On-tool extraction that HSE describes

HSE sheets CN1 and CIS69 describe one system: a hood close to the work, a tight hose, and an M-class or H-class extractor to BS EN 60335-2-69. A HEPA filter in a household vacuum is not that unit, and fine dust can leave through the exhaust. Check airflow at the hood before you start and again as the filter loads. CN1 is for hand-held grinding, not ride-on machines. Employers have a thorough-examination duty at least every 14 months where it applies. A householder still needs to notice when suction collapses. One UK review said an attachment helped. Another said dust spread through the house.

The mask that stays on

Wear protection with an assigned protection factor of at least 20 even while the extractor runs. HSE's examples are FFP3 and a half mask with a P3 filter. Tight-fitting masks need a face-fit test and a clean-shaven seal. For longer than about an hour without a break, HSE points to powered respiratory protection. COSHH duties sit with employers. The dust in a home garage is the same. Keep other people out, and do not sweep the dust back into the air.

What the listings do and do not include

None of the six includes an M-class extractor. A shroud or vacuum port is only the hood. Shelf prices run from £77.99 to £229.89, and the dearest listing still does not include the unit. PWM Sales lists a handheld kit with shroud, cup, and M-class extractor at £977 excluding VAT, which is a system price, not one of these ASINs. Plug and disc sit on the concrete sander buying guide. Which listing fits a small patch is on best concrete grinder.

Common questions

Is the dust shroud enough on its own?
No. A shroud is only the hood. HSE describes hood, hose, and an M-class or H-class unit as one system, and says extraction still misses some silica. None of the six amazon.co.uk listings includes that unit. Fit the shroud, connect a suitable extractor, and wear respiratory protection of at least APF 20. A shroud open to the room collects very little.
What vacuum class do I need in the UK?
HSE specifies an M-class or H-class extractor, citing BS EN 60335-2-69, with the hood close to the surface and a hose that stays tight. A household vacuum is not that machine, even with a HEPA filter dropped in. Check suction before you grind and again as the filter loads. Employers have a thorough-examination duty, at least every 14 months where it applies. A householder still needs a working unit.
Do I still wear a mask if extraction is on?
Yes. Extraction does not catch every particle. Uncontrolled grinding can peak around 1–2 mg/m³ against the 0.1 mg/m³ eight-hour workplace limit. Keep an APF 20 mask on for the whole pass, including just after you lift the tool. Take other people out of the room. The extractor reduces the cloud. It does not finish the control by itself.
Which mask rating applies?
Use protection with an assigned protection factor of at least 20. HSE's examples are FFP3 and a half mask with a P3 filter. Tight-fitting masks need a face-fit test and a clean-shaven seal. For longer than about an hour without a break, HSE points to powered respiratory protection. Replace a mask that is damp or no longer sealing at the nose.
Can I use my household vacuum?
No. A household vacuum is not M class or H class, and a HEPA filter dropped into it does not make it one. Fine dust can pass through and blow back into the room. One UK review found an attachment helpful on a short garage job, and another still had dust through the house. Use a rated unit and a short, tight hose.
Is wet grinding an alternative?
Do not wet a corded grinder unless the maker says that model allows it. Water on a mains tool is an electrical hazard, and a clogged vacuum is not a reason to flood the floor. HSE's control for hand tools remains on-tool extraction and respiratory protection. If the listing is dry-use only, keep it dry.
Does this apply in a home garage?
The 0.1 mg/m³ figure is a workplace exposure limit, and COSHH duties sit with employers where exposure is regular. The dust is the same in a home garage, and a short DIY session is not automatically harmless. Use the same hood, M-class or H-class unit, and APF 20 mask. Keep the rest of the household out of the room while you grind.
