How to use a concrete grinder

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to lower a spinning diamond cup onto a garage lip or a patch of thinset. The failures that matter are a gouge in the slab and a motor that smokes before the high spot is gone. How to use a concrete grinder, for that small dry job, is light overlapping passes with the cup flat, the extractor already running, and a stop when the motor labours. Limits come from amazon.co.uk reviews captured on 19 October 2026. Peter F. did not film a lab pass. Model choice stays on the [concrete sander comparison](/hub/sanders/concrete-sander). Set the tool up before it touches the floor

Fit a diamond cup whose maximum speed is not below the tool's no-load speed, and leave a cutting disc or a flap disc in the box. Put the shroud on first. A grit-18 cup rips a high spot. It is not a polish. A listed rpm is a no-load figure. Clear the room, put on eye and hearing protection, and use the mask on concrete grinder dust extraction. Start the extractor and check airflow at the shroud. A household vacuum is not that setup. One UK review still reported dust through the house with an attachment fitted. Start the grinder in the air so the disc is at speed before it meets the floor.

How to make a pass

Keep the cup flat. A tilt starts dips, unless the maker specifies another contact. This sequence does not average the flat cup with a 15 to 30 degree tip. Overlap each pass and keep moving. Dwelling turns a skim into a groove. Use light pressure. PWM Sales names blocked vents and too much downward pressure as ordinary reasons these tools fail. If you lean on the handle to make dust, you are stalling the disc. Try a short test patch first. A gouge is a curved bright groove the next flat pass does not erase. Take less. Do not dig it out with the edge.

Heat, thinset, and depth

If the motor note drops, or you smell hot windings, lift off and let it cool with the vents clear. Several UK reviews on the 1,500 W MAXXT describe smoke after short use. A higher watt claim is not permission for the same habit. Thinset can come off in shallow passes. One UK review said about 25 square metres of thinset was still on the first disc. These handhelds skim. One non-UK review failed at about 15 mm of mortar. That is a warning, not a target. Do not wet a corded tool because the vacuum clogged, unless the maker says that model allows it. A UK buyer with the 7 kg LengSuaa called about 30 square metres too much. The dedicated tool versus a general grinder is on concrete grinder vs angle grinder.

When to stop and call it a different machine

Stop when the high spot is flush enough for the next trade. Stop if the lead is damaged, the guard will not stay on, or the motor has smoked. Do not cool a smoked tool with water and carry on. Call a professional for a whole floor with a flatness specification, a coating you cannot identify, or a COSHH duty that is not yours. Weights and plugs sit on the concrete sander buying guide.

Common questions

Do I start the cup on the concrete or in the air?
Start the grinder in the air, let the cup reach speed, then lower it flat. A dead stop with the disc already pressed into the slab loads the motor and tends to dig a crescent. At the end, lift off and wait until the disc has stopped before you set the tool down. A coasting cup will mark the patch you just finished.
How hard do I press?
Press only hard enough to keep the cup flat and moving, so the motor note does not fall away. If you are leaning your body on the handle, you are stalling the disc. UK trade notes name excess downward pressure and blocked cooling vents as ordinary reasons these tools overheat. Lighten the pass and clear the vents.
Why did the motor smoke?
Smoke usually means the motor was stalled or the cooling path was packed with dust. Several UK reviews on the 1,500 W MAXXT describe burn-out or smoke after short use. Lift off as soon as the tool labours. If it has already smoked, or the lead is damaged, stop. A higher watt claim is not a measured promise that the same pressure is safe.
Can I grind thinset with the same disc?
A diamond cup can take thinset in shallow passes. One UK review reported thinset over about 25 square metres still on the first disc. That is not permission to mill centimetres of mortar. A very coarse cup rips high spots and does not leave a polish. If you are chasing depth rather than a film, the job has outgrown a skim.
How do I avoid swirl marks and dips?
Keep the cup flat, overlap each pass, and keep moving so you do not dwell. A tilted disc starts a groove, unless the maker specifies another contact. Check a short test patch first. If you can already see a curved bright groove, lighten the next pass. Digging at it with the edge of the cup makes the dip deeper.
When is the area too big for this method?
A UK review of the 7 kg LengSuaa called about 30 square metres too much for the user's back and for the machine. Thinset over about 25 square metres was already a long session on another listing. Use this method for an edge, a lip, or a patch. For an open slab, hire a walk-behind and keep the handheld for the perimeter.
