Floor sander hire cost: one day, or buy a handheld

One UK firm lists an 8 inch floor sander at £35 for one day. Handhelds in this set cost £45 to £64, and the drum still needs an edger for the skirting.

You have pulled the carpet, the pine boards still carry varnish and a few paint splashes, and a handheld near £50 on amazon.co.uk looks quieter than a trip to the hire shop. The floor sander hire cost only decides the job if you are comparing the same work. An 8 inch drum and a 76 mm belt are different machines. One crosses a room. The other strips a patch, a deck or a door, and it leaves the skirting and the dust.
Handheld prices and review counts are the amazon.co.uk listings stored on 16 October 2026. The hire figure is the 8 inch day rate on floorsanderhire.com that same day. Dust limits come from Health and Safety Executive guidance. There was no lab test, and these firms are not a national price. In short
A published floor sander hire cost can be £35 for one day on an 8 inch machine at one UK firm, against handhelds here from about £45 to £64. Hire the drum, and an edger, when the job is a whole room you want flat. Buy a corded 76 mm handheld for a patch, a deck or a small run you will sand again. The day rate is not the whole bill.
Two machines, and why the stickers mislead
A hire drum is a floor machine you walk with the grain. An 8 inch drum is a little over 200 mm across. The common DIY handheld runs a belt about 76 mm wide, and the sanding face is smaller than the belt loop. On the GALAX PRO the listing states a grinding surface of 75 × 170 mm on a 76 × 533 mm belt. The drum's path is more than twice that width.
Corded handhelds stored here sit at about £45 to £64. KATSU is £44.99, Einhell TC-BS 8038 is £48.94, GALAX PRO is £50.99, BLACK+DECKER KA88-GB is £59.49, and SHALL is £63.99. The bench belt-and-disc is £159.99. Those are amazon.co.uk prices stored on 16 October 2026. None is an 8 inch drum.
Reviewers do sand floors with the handhelds. GALAX PRO owners describe floorboards, pallet wood and garage doors. Einhell reviewers describe hours on scaffold boards. KA88 owners work boards beside the skirting. The same reviews describe heat, dust, belts that die on old finish, and hollows where the front roller dug in.
The Bucktool belt-and-disc, the 13 mm BLACK+DECKER KA900E power file, a mini bench sharpener and a 10 mm cordless belt are the wrong shape for a floor. The rows are on the belt sander comparison.
What one hire firm publishes
floorsanderhire.com listed an 8 inch belt floor sander with a headline of £40 and a one-day line of £35 on 16 October 2026. The same site also publishes a 10 inch machine, and the two day rates stay separate. floorsanderslondon.co.uk prices packages excluding VAT and pairs a sander with an edger. Those ex-VAT pounds are a different quotation. Averaging the two firms would invent a price nobody charges.
Sheets, a deposit and VAT can sit on top of that £35. A coarse grit on old varnish disappears quickly. A London package marked excluding VAT needs the tax added. Delivery of a heavy drum can exceed the gap between £35 and a £49 handheld.
The drum housing stops short of the skirting, so ask for the edger and the grit on the same ticket. Some hire stock is 110 V, with a yellow site plug, and some is 230 V for a domestic socket. A 110 V plug will not fit a BS 1363 socket, so the transformer is another line. Plenty of 230 V floor sanders go out to houses, so this page will not say every hire drum is 110 V.
When the handheld is enough
Buy the handheld when the area is small enough for an afternoon and you still want the tool next month. A stained patch, a threshold, a short hall, or deck boards you can sand outside all sit in that group. Which listings carry floor comments is on the belt sander for floorboards page.
Three listings that mention floors
The Einhell TC-BS 8038, ASIN B00JLD4M3I, is the top pick: 4.3 from 2,509 reviews at £48.94. It is 800 W, 230 V and 3.5 kg, with one P80 belt. Reviewers strip doors, banisters and scaffold boards. Tracking is the repeated fault: the belt walks and, in several reports, cuts the plastic until a new belt jams. The listing does not state the belt length; one UK reviewer says 75 × 533 mm fits. Keep it for doors and patches.
The GALAX PRO, B07WHGNGRC, has the plainest floor reports: 1010 W, a stated 76 × 533 mm belt and five P80 belts, at £50.99 with 4.1 from 156 reviews. The bag tears or the port clogs. Separate reviews describe units that stopped after about 20 minutes, a few hours or four uses. The listing prints speed as 120–380 rpm.
The BLACK+DECKER KA88-GB, B0007NLIO2, is the edge handheld: 720 W, 230 V, £59.49, 4.2 from 357 reviews, with an angled nose and a front bump stop. Some reviewers still miss a flush line, because a raised strip on the sole holds the belt off. The listing does not state the belt size; one UK review buys 75 × 533 mm. A listed weight of 998 g clashes with reviews that call it heavy, so this page does not treat 998 g as weighed. Hire an edger when the strip runs around a room.
KATSU at £44.99 shows 4.3 from 40 reviews, with serious early faults in the stored texts. SHALL at £63.99 shows 5.0 from seven reviews. Einhell's 2,509 is the stronger file. Sample size by job is on the best belt sander page, and belt length and the UK plug are in the buying guide.
Dust, the skirting and the plug
GALAX PRO reviewers say the bag is not enough for a whole floor. KA88 owners add a vacuum. Einhell's bag misses a share as well.
The Health and Safety Executive names belt sanding among high-dust tasks. At work, hardwood dust is limited to 3 mg/m³, softwood to 5 mg/m³ and mixed dust to 3 mg/m³ as eight-hour averages, and hand-held sanders are expected to run with an M-class or H-class extractor. Your living room sits outside an employer's duty. Close the doors, use a vacuum on any port, and wear a dust mask and eye protection. Empty the bag before you sand metal on the same tool, because sparks and wood dust are a fire risk.
A hire drum still fills a terrace if the sack is neglected. A square nose leaves a strip at the skirting, and the KA88 bump stop only shortens it. Put the edger on the same quote as the drum.
The Einhell and the KA88 listings state 230 V. Check the photos for a BS 1363 plug. The GALAX PRO listing does not state voltage, so read the rating plate. A 110 V hire drum needs a transformer, and that line belongs in the floor sander hire cost.
One room, and how the sum actually falls
For one varnished living room, the hire path is a day on an 8 inch drum at the £35 line from floorsanderhire.com, plus the edger, the sheets, any deposit and any transformer. Keep the machine moving so it does not dish the boards, then return it.
The buy path is a £48.94 or £50.99 handheld and hours with a 76 mm face. GALAX PRO's five P80 belts are a start, and a floor that needs P40 or P60 before P120 will eat past them. Einhell's single P80 suits a door. You keep the tool, and you keep the dips.
Two days at £35 is £70 before sheets and the edger, already above the £45 to £64 band, and the surface is still not the same as two days with a 76 mm belt. Hire once when this floor is the only one. Buy the Einhell or the GALAX PRO when the area is a patch and you want a belt sander afterwards. If you stay with the belt, the how to use a belt sander page covers a flat plate and the moment the belt walks.
