Home insurance safe rating

Updated: October 2026

You have shortlisted a heavy box on amazon.co.uk because you want the purchase to raise what the insurer will pay. A home insurance safe rating does not work like that. Indicative cash figures belong to named standards on a stated model, installed in a stated way, and the policy can set a different number. None of these titles show EN 1143-1, EN 14450, Sold Secure, or LPS 1183. Cover is the written answer for that model and that fixing. The [wall safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/wall-safe) can help you choose a document box. It cannot insure one. Listings were checked on 16 October 2026. No lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The indicative UK cash figures

ESSA and De Raat publish the pairs UK safe shops repeat. EN 14450 S1 is talked about at about £2,000 cash, S2 at about £4,000, and EN 1143-1 Grade 0 at about £6,000, Grade I at about £10,000, Grade II at about £17,500, and Grade III at about £35,000. Secured by Design points households at the same European grades, and also at Sold Secure and LPS 1183, and it tells you to check the insurer. Those figures are a map of the standards, not a promise on your certificate of insurance. Safe.co.uk says the rating applies only if the safe is installed to the maker's instructions, and it marks some lower rows, including £1,000 and £3,000, as manufacturer figures.

Valuables are not automatically ten times

Cash and jewellery are often discussed as a pair, with valuables at about ten times the cash figure, so an S1 cabinet is sometimes described as £2,000 cash and £20,000 valuables, and S2 as £4,000 and £40,000. Lock & Key says the ten-times line can be changed by the policy, and S1 or S2 is not the usual answer for higher jewellery. Which? says jewellery is always ten times the cash rating. Follow the policy, not one shop cell. De Raat's Grade II valuables cell does not match a clean ten-times multiple of the £17,500 cash figure. A Burton Unica is cited at Grade 0 with £6,000 cash and £60,000 valuables, at about £882 to £1,289, and Simply Safes states it is not fire resistant. That safe is not an ASIN here. The criteria for when you leave this set are on the wall safe buying guide.

Fixing and keys are part of the wording

The standard on a brochure assumes the safe is fixed as the maker specifies. Chubb's installation guide says that, under 1,000 kg, anchoring is what insurers expect, into brick or concrete, and that a timber floor needs a conversation with the insurer. One Pen Underwriting home endorsement, an example rather than every UK policy, requires a locked safe of adequate cash rating, installed to the maker's advice, with keys removed from the home when it is unattended. Ask what your wording requires. Override keys live outside the safe, and in the Pen example they leave the house when you do. A key in the hall drawer fails that kind of clause. The practical steps are on how to fit a wall safe. A bedroom bolt can still fail Police.uk's placement advice, because the bedroom is the first place searched.

What this comparison cannot claim

Every safe in this comparison is unrated on the evidence of its amazon.co.uk title. A 4.5-star line, including the Amazon Basics cabinet's very large review count, is shopper feedback. It is not EN 1143-1, not Sold Secure, and not LPS 1183. The best wall safe page ranks a stud-bay body and a small bolted Yale for a document hide inside this set. That ranking is not an insurance approval. Before you buy for a stated sum, name the model, the fixing, and the cash and jewellery sums, and ask the insurer to confirm in writing that this model, fixed that way, meets the endorsement. If they name Grade 0 or above, you are shopping outside these listings. High-value jewellery still belongs in a deposit facility if Police.uk's advice matches the value.

Common questions

Is ten times cash what my insurer will pay for jewellery?
Ten times is a shorthand shops and some guides use, and Which? states it as always. Lock & Key says the policy can change it, and De Raat's Grade II valuables cell is not a clean ten-times sum. Ask for the jewellery limit in writing for your model. Do not multiply the cash figure and treat the result as cover.
Does a 4.5-star safe count?
A 4.5-star amazon.co.uk rating counts as review volume. It does not count as a cash rating, a burglary test, or an AiS approval. Safe.co.uk's generally on an AiS logo is that retailer's view, not a rule that stars can replace. The insurer names the standard, or confirms that no grade is required for the sum you declared.
Are the Burg-Wächter PointSafe £1,000 figures a certificate?
The £1,000 cash and £10,000 valuables lines are retailer and maker indications. Burg-Wächter UK describes in-house testing, not an EN 1143-1 grade, on that wall-safe page. Simply Safes marks the PW2E not certified. Treat £1,000 as a shop claim unless your insurer has accepted that exact model in writing.
Must the safe be bolted?
Often the wording requires fixing to the maker's instructions, and Chubb says insurers expect anchoring into brick or concrete for safes under 1,000 kg. A timber floor needs its own question. Not every policy demands a professional installer. The Pen example is a locked, adequately rated safe, fitted as the maker advises, which you confirm against your schedule.
What do I ask the insurer before I buy?
Name the model, the wall, and the fixing, and state the cash and jewellery sums. Ask whether this safe, installed that way, meets the safe endorsement, and ask for the answer in writing. If they require EN 1143-1 Grade 0 or a named Sold Secure or LPS grade, none of the boxes in this comparison qualify on their titles.
