Fingerprint safe vs keypad

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing a fingerprint safe vs keypad because the sensor looks quicker, and someone does not want another PIN. The sensor does not change the steel, the weight, or the grade. In this amazon.co.uk set it is a convenience layer on three listings, and UK reviews include households who never enrolled a print. The [safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/safe) holds every lock line. Peter F., DIY and tools editor, wrote this on 16 October 2026 from the listings and Secured by Design. No sensor was lab-tested. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the lock does not decide

Secured by Design treats lock type as a preference: key, mechanical, or electronic. Which? notes that a key and a digital lock can be equal when the box is the same grade. MB Direct still says you need a battery and a backup key. A claim that a sensor is hard to copy is not a test of these cabinets. None of the three fingerprint listings prints EN 14450 or EN 1143-1. Adding a sensor to the NALULI does not certify the 21.4 kg shell. Bolts sit on the buying guide. A faster advert is only faster after the print has enrolled.

Keypad, including Yale lockdown

Most of this set is a keypad plus a key. Yale’s value cabinets use a 3–8 digit PIN, two keys, and four AA batteries. There is no fingerprint. After three wrong PINs the keypad locks for 20 seconds, then for five minutes. Reviews of the YSV/200/DB2 say the code is set in minutes. A keypad can fail as electronics, which is why the key exists. The Bonsaii at £15.49 is a password plus two keys and USB-C, and the batteries are not in the carton. AltiKeep’s cabinets are keypad and key, with no sensor. The Yale small is the top pick for a passport job: batteries included, and no enrolment step. The best cabinet safe page puts that job in context. Silent mode is a quieter beep, not a higher grade.

Where the fingerprint listings stumble

The KornerBatl HTA-25F claims up to 30 fingerprints, plus a PIN, a key, and USB-C, at £64.99. It is 4.6 from 253 ratings. A summary says recognition is inconsistent, so the 0.3 seconds in the bullet is a listing claim. The HSGCJS claims up to 28 prints at £109.99. More than one UK household could not enrol a print or set a PIN, and the alarm sounded. The NALULI A6-45ZW claims up to 20 prints at £169.99. One UK review says the key turned halfway and the door would not open. The keypad sibling, A6-45DZ, is the same 21.4 kg shell at £159.99 with 11 ratings and no sensor.

When to skip the sensor

Skip the sensor when you want a code you can read back. That is the Yale line, the Bonsaii, the AltiKeep keypads, and the keypad NALULI. Keep the key outside, and test the backup before the door shuts. Take a sensor only on top of a PIN and a key you have proved. The KornerBatl is the less thin file: 253 ratings against 100 and 19. Do not take the HSGCJS if the only reason is the fingerprint. Do not pay the extra £10 for the NALULI sensor unless you can return a door that will not open. Fixing is on how to bolt a safe down. A print reader does not hold the box to the floor.

Common questions

Is fingerprint safer than a PIN?
Not on these cabinets. Secured by Design treats the lock as a preference, and Which? treats key and digital as equal when the grade matches. None of these fingerprint listings prints a burglary grade the keypad models lack. The UK reviews here are about enrolment and keys.
What if it will not learn my finger?
Stop with the door open and use the PIN or the key. On the HSGCJS, more than one UK household could not enrol a print or set a new PIN, and the alarm sounded. These files do not contain a reset for a different brand of house lock. If neither the PIN nor the key works, you are in a return.
What is the Yale lockdown?
Three wrong PINs and the keypad waits 20 seconds. Three more and it waits five minutes. That applies across the mini, the small, and the large Yale value safes in this set. The small model’s UK reviews still describe a code set in minutes, with two keys if the batteries or the keypad misbehave. The wait is a nuisance when you mistype. It is not a reason to add a sensor the Yale does not have.
Do I still need the key?
Yes. MB Direct says both keypad and biometric safes need a backup, and every fingerprint listing here includes a key as well as the sensor. Store it outside the cabinet. Test it with the door open before you rely on a print. On the NALULI fingerprint, one UK review says the key itself would not open the door, which is why the test happens on day one, not after a lockout.
Which of the two NALULI models is the keypad one?
The keypad cabinet is A6-45DZ, ASIN B0GV3TGBLJ, at £159.99. The fingerprint cabinet is A6-45ZW, ASIN B0GV3RBLL9, at £169.99. Both are 52 litres and 21.4 kg. The keypad model has 11 ratings and no sensor. The fingerprint model has 19 ratings and a review in which the key failed. The £10 gap is the sensor, not a different grade.
