Best home safe UK: what to check before the brand

Updated: October 2026

The title already says safe or anti-theft. What you need is a sequence: the job, the grade or the honest lack of one, then the bolts, then the lock and the litres. The [safe comparison](/hub/safes-and-secure-storage/safe) holds the eleven shelf prices, from the Bonsaii at £15.49 to the fingerprint NALULI at £169.99. This page does not rank those boxes. It says which checks the listings fail. Peter F., DIY and tools editor, compiled it on 16 October 2026 from the amazon.co.uk extracts. No attack test was run. What you are storing

Start with the object, not the keypad. A passport is a different purchase from a ring an insurer will only cover inside a named grade. The Association of British Insurers notes that a contents policy often caps a single item around £1,500 unless you have specified it. Secured by Design asks what you store, where it will be fixed, then what the insurer will accept. If the policy names EN 14450 S2 or an EN 1143-1 Eurograde, this amazon.co.uk set is the wrong shop, because none of the extracts print those labels. If the job is passports out of a drawer, you can stay, and you still bolt the box down. The best cabinet safe page names which ASIN fits that smaller job.

The grade, or the lack of one

EN 14450 and EN 1143-1 are burglary grades, and they are not the same label. Secured by Design quotes a common UK shorthand: S2 around £4,000 cash and £40,000 valuables, Eurograde 0 near £6,000 and £60,000, Grade 1 near £10,000 and £100,000. Those figures are insurance shorthand, not a statute. Sold Secure’s domestic scheme, SS 304, is Silver or Gold. There is no Bronze tier on a value cabinet. The lock does not create the grade. The Yale YSV/200/DB2 bullet says Yale Value safes are accredited under the Police Preferred Specification. That is not an EN 1143-1 grade and it prints no cash sum. Safe.co.uk showed a Burton Home Safe S2 size 1E at £283.45: EN 14450 S2, about 11 litres, about 19 kg. The NALULI shells at 21.4 kg still carry no EN number.

Weight, fixing, lock, then litres

Every cabinet here is under the 1,000 kg line. Chubb and Howden both treat that mass as something that must be anchored, preferably into masonry. Plywood and a thin wardrobe shelf are a known reason a claim fails, because the box leaves with the timber. Weights run from 2.3 kg to 21.4 kg. A 21 kg cabinet still fits in a car if the bolts were never used. The bolt sequence is on how to bolt a safe down. Override keys live outside the safe. Yale’s value line includes four AA batteries. The Bonsaii has USB-C and does not include batteries. Litres come last. KornerBatl prints 14 litres and a highlight says 22. ToruKeep says 50 L in the title and 60 litres in the table. A bag is not EN 15659, which the document safe page takes apart.

When this set is enough

Stay with these listings when the job is passports or everyday papers and you can bolt into something solid. The Yale small at £30.43 is the top pick because the UK review text attaches to it and the batteries and bolts are in the box. The Bonsaii at £15.49 is the best value if you add batteries. Neither claims a fire time. Leave the set when the policy names S2 or a Eurograde, when the item is jewellery above a specified limit, or when originals must survive a named paper standard. The 52 litre NALULI does not become S2 because it is heavy.

Common questions

What should I check before the brand?
Check the object, then whether the insurer has named a grade, then whether this listing prints it. In this set the grade line is blank on every extract. You can still buy a light cabinet for passports if you bolt it and keep the spare key outside.
Is EN 14450 the same as a Eurograde?
No. EN 14450 covers security levels S1 and S2 for lighter cabinets. EN 1143-1 is the Eurograde scale, starting at Grade 0 and Grade 1 in the shorthand most UK guides quote. Secured by Design treats the cash bands as typical insurer language, not as a figure you can assume. A listing that mentions neither standard has not quietly met the other one.
Does a heavier amazon.co.uk safe count as insured for jewellery?
Weight is not a certificate. The NALULI cabinets at 21.4 kg are the heaviest here and still show no EN 14450 or EN 1143-1 label. Ask the insurer which grade, and whether your floor counts. Do not infer a £40,000 valuables line from kilograms.
What is a realistic price for a certified S2, compared with this set?
This set runs from about £15 to about £170. Safe.co.uk showed a Burton Home Safe S2 size 1E at £283.45: about 11 litres, EN 14450 S2. That shop price can move, and it is not an amazon.co.uk price for any ASIN here.
Do I still have to bolt down a 21 kg cabinet?
Yes. Chubb and Howden both use the under-1,000 kg rule, and 21 kg still fits in a car. Bolts into masonry are the preferred fixing. A plywood back is the case to put to the insurer before you call it fixed.
