How to set up a mitre saw stand

Updated: 22 October 2026

The board drops at the far end, or a roller sits proud of the saw table and the offcut kicks. How to set up a mitre saw stand is the sequence that stops both. Lock every leg, fasten the saw, set the rollers level with the table or a fraction below, then cut a scrap. This page assumes you already chose the stand. Prices and who should buy which frame are on the [mitre saw stand comparison](/hub/power-saws/mitre-saw-stand). Peter F. used Evolution's stand manual, Bosch's GTA 3800 manual, and the amazon.co.uk review themes captured on 19 October 2026. There was no cut test. Lock the legs, then mount the saw

Evolution's manual 005-0001 says to deploy the legs until the snap buttons lock. Bosch's GTA 3800 manual wants the locking pins in on all four legs, then the foot set so the bench does not rock. One UK review of the Evolution Plus reports a missing locking pin. One UK review of the MSS 1610 says a leg pin snapped after light shed use. Fit the saw only after the frame is still. If the bolts are too short, as one UK reviewer found with a Worx saw on an EVOMS1, stop. Do not drill the bracket or the base. The checks before you pay are on the mitre saw stand buying guide. The guard and brake stay on the saw, which still needs a BS 1363 plug on 230 V.

Set the rollers, then cut a scrap

Evolution's manual says the roller tops should be level with the rotary table, with the supports locked. Use level, or a fraction below, and re-check after the arms lock. A roller above the table lifts the timber. A roller far below lets the end droop. BuildWiz suggests flush or 1–2 mm below. Those millimetres are that site's guidance, not the Evolution instruction. UK reviews on the MSS 1610 describe arms that miss table height, and reviews on the MSS 1608 describe end supports that will not screw home. Cut a scrap the same thickness as the skirting. If the offcut climbs, the roller is high. Bosch's manual warns that the balance can shift after the cut and the stand can tip. Support the offcut.

Fold it

Evolution's manual says knockdown is easier with the saw off. Take the saw off a quick-release mount, fold the arms in, and keep your hands off the pivot. Draper's bullets are the exception. They say you can transport that stand with the mitre saw still fitted. Follow that sentence only for the Draper 90249. It is not a licence to wheel the Bosch, which UK reviews say has no wheels in the box, or to treat Einhell support rollers as van castors. If a locking pin will not click, do not bend it back into the hole.

When to stop

Stop if you cannot lift the saw safely, if a leg pin will not lock, or if the only fit is to drill a thin bracket or the saw's base. Stop if employees will use the stand and you do not own the duty under regulation 20 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. That is an employer duty to stabilise equipment where safety needs it. Stop if the fault is the saw's guard or brake. The stand does not guard the blade. Health and Safety Executive sheet WIS16 is about circular saw benches, not mitre saws. Long boards are on mitre saw stand for skirting.

Common questions

Do you fit the saw before or after the legs are locked?
After. Evolution's manual says deployment is easier without the saw attached, and the legs should lock on the snap buttons before you load the beam. Bosch wants all four locking pins in, and the bench should not rock, before you rely on it. Fitting the saw first hides a pin that has not clicked. If one leg will not lock, do not use the saw's weight to hold the corner down.
Should the rollers be level with the table or below it?
Evolution's manual says level with the rotary table, with the supports locked. The practical check used with these stands is level, or a fraction below, re-checked after the arms lock. A roller above the table lifts the timber. A roller far below lets the end droop. A UK site's 1–2 mm figure is that site's guidance, not the wording in the Evolution manual.
What is a scrap cut for?
A scrap of the same thickness shows whether the roller height is honest before you cut a finished board. The piece should sit flat, and the offcut should not climb at the end of the cut. If it climbs, the roller is high. If the far end sags, the arm is low or unlocked. Bosch's manual also warns that the balance can shift after the cut and the stand can tip, so support the offcut on the scrap as well.
What if one leg pin will not click?
Stop. A pin that has not clicked is an unlocked leg, and the stand can rock as the cut finishes. One UK review of the Evolution Plus reports a missing locking pin. One UK review of the MSS 1610 says a leg pin snapped after light shed use. Neither report is a rate. Both are a reason to stop rather than bend the pin or cut with three legs locked.
When should you stop and get a professional?
Stop if you cannot lift the saw safely, if a pin will not lock, or if the only fit is to drill a thin bracket or the saw's base. Stop if employees will use the setup and you do not own the employer's duty to stabilise the equipment. Stop if the fault is the saw's guard or brake. The stand does not guard the blade, and this page is not a substitute for that assessment.
