How to use a mini circular saw

Updated: 22 October 2026

The next mistake is trusting the moulded scale or the laser on the first cut. Set the depth on scrap, support the offcut, and let the blade stop before you lift the shoe. This is how to use a mini circular saw in our [mini circular saw comparison](/hub/power-saws/mini-circular-saw), from the 20 October 2026 listings. Peter F. did not run a lab test. If the timber is thicker than the printed depth, read the [85 mm or 115 mm mini circular saw](/hub/power-saws/mini-circular-saw/sub/mini-circular-saw-85mm-or-115mm) page before you force the cut. Set the depth, then check it

Unplug the cord, or remove the battery, before you touch the shoe. Lower the blade until a tooth just clears the underside, then lock it. Prove that on scrap of the same sheet. UK reviews say the moulded scale can be off: a DCA review puts the 0° mark several degrees out, and the GALAX PRO prints both 28.5 mm and 27 mm. A 0–27 mm saw has room for 18 mm sheet and none for a 47 mm stud. Square the shoe if the bevel latch has moved.

Change the blade with the lock held

Leave the saw unplugged, or the pack off. Press the spindle lock fully and hold it while you turn the nut. A half-pressed lock lets the spindle spin. A UK review of the Enventor 705 W says the bolt is a left-hand thread, so check the arrow. The 24-tooth TCT blade is for wood, a finer disc is what the boxes offer for plastic, and the diamond disc is the tile blade. The Enventor 85 mm blades print a 10 mm bore, and these boxes have no reducer. Refit the guard before you reconnect power.

Keep the cut straight and the offcut supported

Clamp the work so both sides of the cut are held. A GALAX PRO review says to support both sides or expect kickback. An offcut that drops can pinch the blade. Stand to the side, use both hands, and keep the lead clear of the line. A rip fence or the scale ruler is the straight-edge you can see. On the Enventor 85 mm, UK reviews put the laser about 3 mm off the kerf. One scrap pass tells you whether to follow it. UKHSA advice is not to stare into a guide laser. If the blade binds, release the trigger and wait until it stops. Do not twist the shoe to free it.

Dust, noise, and the point to stop

On the Enventor 85 mm, reviews say the hose kinks. On the DOVAMAN, reviews prefer a straight hose to the right-angle piece. A domestic vacuum is not Class M extraction. If you are an employee, HSE wood-dust guidance is to capture the dust and not to sweep it: 3 mg/m³ for hardwood and mixtures, and 5 mg/m³ for softwood. Those limits are for work. Stop for structural timber, a live wall chase, a porcelain floor, or untrained use at work, where PUWER 1998 expects guarding and training. Cord or battery is a separate choice on the corded or cordless mini circular saw page.

Common questions

How far should the tooth stick out under the board?
Set the shoe so a tooth just clears the underside, then confirm it on a scrap of the same material. More projection gives the teeth room to grab if the board shifts. The last few millimetres of a stated maximum, such as 27 mm on the Enventor 85 mm, are a rule of thumb. If the board is thicker than the printed 90° depth, change saws. Forcing the shoe will not add diameter to an 85 mm blade.
How do I change the blade without the spindle spinning?
Disconnect the power first. Press the spindle lock fully and keep it down while you turn the nut, which is the Enventor instruction. A half-pressed lock lets the spindle turn. On the Enventor 705 W, a UK review says the blade bolt is left-hand thread, so check the arrow on your saw before you force the wrench. Refit the guard and confirm it closes before you plug the saw back in.
What do I do if the laser misses the pencil line?
Cut a scrap and see where the kerf falls. On the Enventor 85 mm, reviews put the laser about 3 mm off. If it misses, follow a pencil line and a fence you can see, and leave the laser off for that cut. Do not stare into the beam. The Enventor 580 W 115 mm does not claim a laser in the bullets, so a missing line on that model is not a fault you can adjust.
How do I stop kickback on a small saw?
Support both sides of the cut, which is the point of the GALAX PRO review, and keep the blade sharp and the shoe flat. Stand to the side. If the blade binds, release the trigger, hold the saw still, and wait until the blade stops. Then disconnect power before you free the kerf. Twisting a spinning blade, or holding the work on your leg, is how a small saw becomes a large cut.
Can I trust the moulded depth scale?
Treat it as a starting point. A DCA review says the 0° mark was several degrees out and that the depth scale was coarse but usable. The GALAX PRO listing prints 28.5 mm and 27 mm on the same page. Set the tooth just through the board, cut scrap, and measure. If you need a bevel, set 45° with a square rather than the moulding alone, and remember the bevel depth is lower than the 90° figure.
