Fan heater for a small room

Updated: October 2026

A box room, a desk or a caravan berth does not need a workshop heater. A fan heater for a small room means matching the watts to that space, then checking you can still keep about a metre clear. Too little output leaves you cold. Too much is noise, a hot blast, and a higher hourly cost. Products Compared used Ideal Home’s rule of thumb and the amazon.co.uk listings in this comparison. We did not measure your room. The ranked list is the [fan heater comparison](/hub/portable-heaters/fan-heater). The all-round top pick is on the [best fan heater](/hub/portable-heaters/fan-heater/sub/fan-heater-best) page. This page asks which listings belong in a small space.

How small is the room

Ideal Home quotes about 100 W per square metre. About 10 m² lands near 1,000 W, and about 20 m² nearer 2,000 W. A draughty ten square metres can still want 1,500 W. Coverage lines in this batch are not a survey. At Ofgem’s 26.32 pence per kWh for England, Scotland and Wales from 1 October to 31 December 2026, a full-power hour is about 18p at 700 W and about 53p at 2,000 W. That cap does not set Northern Ireland’s rate.

The 700 W plug-in

The Russell Hobbs RHPH7001 is the small end of this batch: 700 W, £19.70, with no cable of its own. It states 15–30°C, a 12-hour timer and overheat protection, at 4.2 from 1,369 reviews. A tip-over switch is not stated. Reviews say the instructions want clearance many low sockets do not give. Skip it behind a sofa, nearer 15–20 m², or where children need a tip-over switch. An extension lead is the wrong repair.

1,500–1,800 W ceramic heaters

Where 700 W will not keep up, the white Dreo Atom 316 at £42.49 is the best fit: tip-over protection, 5–35°C and a 12-hour timer. Buy white unless you want the gold finish at £49.99. The Amazon Basics at £9.90 is the best value at 1,800 W, with tip-over stated, so use the lower setting in a room near 1,000 W. The longer checks are on the fan heater buying guide.

When 2 kW is the wrong small-room heater

A 2 kW wire heater is the wrong default for a box room. The Warmlite WL44002 at £9.00 has the reviews, and UK reviewers say it has no tilt switch. The DAHTEC 2,800 W at £67.15, with a 12.7 A field and five ratings, is a workshop heater, above about 2.7 kW continuous on a BS 1363 plug. The one-metre rule does not shrink with the room. Placement is on the how to use a fan heater safely page.

Common questions

Will 700 W heat a bedroom?
It can, if the room is small and you sit close to the heater. The Russell Hobbs is 700 W with a claimed 10 square metres, which is the listing’s claim, not a test. On the rule of thumb, 700 W is light for a draughty 10 m² room. Reviews mention kitchen corners and campervans. Nearer 15 m², step up to about 1,500 W on the floor.
Is 2 kW too much for a box room?
The rule of thumb puts a box room well under 2,000 W, so high is a short blast you should be able to turn down. Full power is about 53p an hour on the 26.32p rate, and the fan is close to you. Use 2 kW if the room is draughty and the heater has a lower setting and a stated tip-over switch. Skip a model with no tilt switch around children or pets.
What is a sensible heater for a desk?
Use 700–1,500 W, with a thermostat, and keep the outlet off your shins. The Russell Hobbs suits a socket that already has clearance. The white Atom at 1,500 W suits a spot a metre from the chair. A full-power hour is about 18p or about 39p on the rate above. Switch it off when you leave the desk.
Can I use a plug-in heater in a caravan?
Use the Russell Hobbs in a berth only when a sound socket already gives the clearance in the instructions, and 700 W is enough. Reviews mention campervans and sockets that are too low or too close to furnishings. Plug into that socket. An extension lead is the wrong fix. A 12-hour timer does not approve overnight use.
Which of these is quiet enough for a small bedroom?
The white Dreo Atom 316, 1,500 W at £42.49, is the listing whose reviews most often call the fan acceptable in a bedroom, with tip-over protection and a 12-hour timer stated. The Pro Breeze adds 60° oscillation and has only 27 ratings. Wire heaters such as the Warmlite are more often called noisy beside a pillow. Quiet while you read is not an overnight approval.
Do I still need a metre of clearance in a small room?
You still need about a metre. Electrical Safety First does not shrink the gap because the room is small, and a small room makes the gap harder. If the only layout blows onto a duvet, do not put a portable heater there. A 700 W plug-in fails the same way when the socket is low and behind a bedside table.
Should I take the 2.8 kW workshop heater into a small flat?
Leave the DAHTEC 2,800 W for a workshop. It costs £67.15, weighs 4.16 kg and shows 4.7 from five ratings, with a 12.7 A current field above about 2.7 kW continuous on a BS 1363 plug. One review describes a burning smell at the plug and cable. Use 700–1,800 W on a wall socket, with a metre of clearance.
