Floating skimmer vs skimmer net

Updated: 16.10.2026

You already own a skimmer net, and a floating skimmer looks like the way to stop standing at the edge. UK reviews praise the machine and, on the same products, say a net is faster when the basket fills every hour. By the end you should know when an unattended pass is worth about £110 or about £402, and when the net you have is the better tool. The machines, and not the nets, are on the [floating skimmer comparison](/hub/pool-care/floating-skimmer). Products Compared used the amazon.co.uk captures from 15 October 2026. What the machine does that a net does not

A hand net is a visit you make, then stop. A floating skimmer is a continuous pass while you are somewhere else. Cotswold Koi’s other half still holds: debris is caught before it sinks, and the floater does not replace the filter. The price of that pass, on this capture, is about £109.99 for the Velda or about £121.94 for the OASE. Both include a pump. If you only need a visit, the pump price buys a job the net already does. Once you want the pass, each machine’s role is on the best floating skimmer page.

When the reviews went back to the net

On a light fall of pollen or a few leaves, the machine still earns its place. UK OASE reviews say the basket fills quickly under trees or duckweed, and some say a net is quicker when the cup is full. Net the bulk of duckweed first, then let the skimmer hold what remains. There is no clearance percentage here. Velda’s UK texts split the same way. One says the unit takes leaves and duckweed. One says it is unfit because it rises when the black collar is fitted. If the basket would be full before you have walked away, the net is the faster tool. Debris that has already sunk is invisible to both. Emptying the basket is on the how to use a floating pond skimmer page.

Betta Betta SE solar skimmer
7.7/10about £402.42

A pool net against the Betta

The Betta SE is about £402.42, a solar surface robot at 7.4 V with a 200 micrometre basket. A coarse leaf net is not that mesh. The robot can take finer surface dust, and it still misses the floor. One UK review says the owner skipped the net for four days in good weather. That is one review, not a season. That price against a net you own is a large gap for a surface-only pass. It fits several light days without a lead. It is a weak exchange when you would still net a thick fall every afternoon. The 4.4 from 7,943 is not a count of UK owners who discarded their nets.

Use both, or buy neither extra

Buy the machine when you want a pass while you are not standing there, and the load is a light, repeating fall. Keep the net, or net first, when the load would fill a basket in an hour. Using both is what the duckweed reviews already did: the net takes the carpet, the skimmer holds the remainder. Buying nothing extra is the right call when a short daily visit already finishes the surface. If the net is enough, leave this table. Hand nets are in the pool skimmer net comparison. This page does not put those removed nets back as products to click. The buying guide is the fork between the pond units and the robot, including the 25 m² table and the 50 m² line.

Common questions

Should I buy a skimmer if I already own a net?
Buy it when you want the surface skimmed while you are elsewhere, and debris arrives as a light, repeating fall. Keep the net alone when a short daily visit already finishes the job. On this capture the pond units are about £109.99 and about £121.94 with a pump. That price is the unattended pass, and the net can stay for the heavy days.
Is a skimmer worth it in a heavy autumn leaf fall?
UK reviews say a net is quicker when the basket is constantly full. A fall that fills the cup every hour sends you back to the bank and removes the reason for the machine. Net the bulk, and use a skimmer for what keeps arriving. Leaves that have already sunk are outside both tools.
Will it finish a duckweed carpet on its own?
The UK pattern in the OASE reviews is to net the bulk first and let the skimmer hold the remainder. One Velda UK review reports leaves and duckweed taken. Another calls the unit unfit because it rises with the collar fitted. That is a mixed result. This page states no clearance percentage.
Is the £402 robot a replacement for a pool net?
It can stand in for the net on a few easy days. One UK review reports four days without a net in good weather, which is one review, not a season. The Betta SE is surface only, with a 200 micrometre basket, at about £402.42. A coarse leaf net still takes a thick fall faster, and it is a coarser mesh than 200 micrometres. The floor stays separate.
Where do I go if the net is enough?
Use the pool skimmer net comparison, which covers hand nets for pools, hot tubs, and garden ponds. This floating-skimmer table does not list those nets. If you later want the machine, the main comparison holds the OASE, the Velda, and the Betta at the captured prices.
