Floating pond skimmer: which type to buy

Updated: 16.10.2026

A search for a floating pond skimmer mixes a hand net, a wall basket, a pump-less float, and two machines that do not share a supply. You want a type and a budget before a model. By the end you should know whether the water wants a mains pond unit with its own pump, a solar pool robot, or another category. Prices sit on the [floating skimmer comparison](/hub/pool-care/floating-skimmer). Products Compared used the amazon.co.uk captures from 15 October 2026, the OASE table, the Velda bullets, and the Bettabot FAQ. We did not run a pond. What counts as a floating skimmer

A floating skimmer here sits on the water and pulls the surface into a basket. Swell UK says the floating type has its own pump. That fits the OASE and the Velda: float, pump, flap, basket, and foam. An AquaForte float at about £37.95 still needs a pump you own, so it is not a fourth row. The Betta SE is a solar surface robot for a pool. Hand nets, wall brackets, and chlorine floaters were the wrong object. On this capture the OASE is about £121.94, the Velda about £109.99, and the Betta about £402.42.

Pond pump or solar pool robot

A garden pond points at the mains units: the OASE at 230 V and 40 W, the Velda at 43 W. The Betta is solar, 7.4 V, with no mains lead. OASE’s table adapts from 40 cm. Bettabot’s FAQ puts the robot at 12.7 cm, salt up to 5,000 ppm, and chlorine below 20 ppm. A 20 cm shelf can meet one figure and miss the other. That split is on the pond skimmer or pool skimmer page.

The cover figure, and the 50 m² line

OASE’s table for the SwimSkim 25, model 57384, states 25 m², 40 W, and 2,500 litres per hour. The amazon.co.uk title on this capture is capped at 25 m² as well. A 50 m² line on the same family of pages contradicts that table. A pond near 40 m² sits outside the SwimSkim 25 table. Velda’s bullets state ponds up to 40 m², 3,000 litres per hour, and 43 W. The OASE weight field of 3 g is a data fault. The Betta bullets state 30 hours or more and no pool area. A 30 litre field conflicts with the 30-hour bullet.

What you need on the bank

A mains unit needs an RCD-protected outdoor socket before it needs a basket routine. Electrical Safety First expects that RCD, a test at least every three months on a pond pump, and the plug pulled before you service the unit. A new outdoor circuit in England or Wales is an electrician’s job, as the RHS describes Part P. The plug is a clash. Swell UK says pond pumps often arrive without a moulded plug, and that line is retailer practice, not a sentence from legislation.gov.uk. None of the three listings states an IP rating. Flooding the chamber before switch-on is on the how to use a floating pond skimmer page.

What to leave in the other categories

A hand net is a visit you make yourself, and those nets are not rows here. Pool and pond hand nets are in the pool skimmer net comparison. A hanging basket on an above-ground pool is a different tool. If the pond socket is on an RCD and the cover matches, open the OASE or the Velda. The Velda’s 40 m² is the larger stated cover, and its UK file is thinner. If the water is a pool and you want no lead, open the Betta. A pump-less float near £38 is the wrong saving when you still have to buy the pump.

Common questions

Does a floating skimmer include the pump?
The OASE and the Velda include one, listed at 2,500 and 3,000 litres per hour. A pump-less float such as the AquaForte snippet at about £37.95 still needs a pump and is not a row in the comparison. The Betta SE has motors and a battery. It is a solar pool robot, so it is not a 230 V pond pump in a box.
Does the Velda claim a larger pond than the OASE?
On the stated figures, yes: up to 40 m² at 3,000 litres per hour and 43 W, against the OASE table of 25 m² at 2,500 litres per hour and 40 W. The Velda file has three UK reviews, a thinner record than the OASE’s UK review text.
Do I need an outdoor socket first?
The OASE and the Velda need an RCD-protected mains supply. An existing outdoor socket on an RCD is the supply those listings assume. A new outdoor circuit in England or Wales is electrician’s work, as the RHS describes Part P. The Betta has no mains lead.
Is the Betta SE a pond skimmer in a garden pond?
The listing and the Bettabot FAQ describe a solar surface cleaner for pool water, at 12.7 cm, salt up to 5,000 ppm, and chlorine below 20 ppm. They state no pond area and no litres-per-hour flow. A garden pond stays with the OASE or the Velda.
What arrives regarding a UK plug?
Plan for a check. Swell UK says pond pumps often arrive without a moulded plug. The Velda bullet says a plug is fitted, and a verified UK review says it was not. The OASE listing does not state a UK plug. The Betta arrives without a mains lead.
