How to use a floating pond skimmer

Updated: 16.10.2026

The first switch-on can make a floating pond skimmer sit high, suck air, and sound broken. You need the first hour, and the difference between trapped air and a fault. This order is for a mains pond unit, with a short note if yours is the solar robot. Which machine to buy is on the [buying guide](/hub/pool-care/floating-skimmer/sub/floating-skimmer-buying-guide), and the rows are on the [floating skimmer comparison](/hub/pool-care/floating-skimmer). Products Compared followed the SwimSkim manual excerpt and Electrical Safety First. We did not install a unit. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before it goes in the pond

The OASE and the Velda are mains pumps. Electrical Safety First expects an RCD, tested at least every three months on a pond pump. No RCD, a trip as soon as it runs, or a cut cable means you stop and call an electrician. A new outdoor circuit in England or Wales is that same call, as the RHS describes Part P. Swell UK says these pumps often arrive without a moulded plug. The Velda bullet and a verified UK review disagree. Fit a plug only if you are competent. The SwimSkim 25 adapts from 40 cm, so a shallower shelf is the wrong pond.

Flood, flap, then power

Flood the chamber, seat the flap, and tether the unit before you switch on. The SwimSkim manual also says to disconnect the plug before your hand goes into the water. One UK review puts the flood at about 15 seconds, which is that reviewer’s timing. Switching on in air is how it rises and howls. The tether limits the OASE aerator jet. Leave the air intake open.

The first day of emptying

UK reviews on the OASE say the basket fills quickly under trees or duckweed. Empty it when it is loaded, rinse the foam, and refit only after the chamber can flood again. Velda’s page says to empty the reservoir and rinse the foam. That page’s season list is not a measurement that a UK pond stays ice-free. If the bulk is duckweed or fallen leaves, UK reviews describe a hand net for the thick layer and the skimmer for what keeps arriving. That choice is on the floating skimmer or a net page.

When it still rises

Rising on the first switch-on, with an empty chamber, is trapped air. Flood it, tilt it, and try again with the basket empty. A full basket does the same thing later, so empty it and reseat the flap. A Velda review says to set the rim about 1 cm under the surface. That is one reviewer’s setting, and there is no Velda manual here to confirm it. If it still climbs out after a proper flood and a clean basket, stop and talk to the retailer. One UK review says the Velda rises as soon as the black collar is fitted. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, is a 30-day right to reject faulty goods once setup followed the instructions. If small fish are drawn in, pull the plug before your hand goes in the water.

The Betta is a different routine

The Betta SE does not follow this flood, flap, and 230 V order. The listing says assembly is not required. You set it on the pool and empty the basket from the top handle. It is solar at 7.4 V, so the pond-pump RCD chapter does not transfer. Bettabot’s FAQ still limits the robot to the surface, 12.7 cm of water, salt up to 5,000 ppm, and chlorine below 20 ppm. If the water might be a pond, use the pond or pool skimmer page before you copy this routine across.

Common questions

Do I switch it on before it is under the water?
Flood the chamber and seat the flap first, then switch on. The SwimSkim manual excerpt and the Swell UK guide both put water in the body before power. One UK review describes about 15 seconds of flooding. Power in air is how the unit sits high and sounds faulty while it is still only full of air.
Why does it sit high and make a noise?
The usual causes here are an unflooded chamber and a basket that has already filled. Tilt and flood it, empty the cup, and reseat the flap. A Velda review also ties rising to the black collar. If it still climbs out with a clean basket after a proper flood, speak to the retailer. Leave the air intake unblocked.
How often do I empty the basket?
Empty it when it is full. On a dirty pond that can be more than once on the same day. UK OASE reviews describe quick filling under trees or duckweed. Velda’s page says to empty the reservoir and rinse the foam. A light pollen day is a different interval from an autumn leaf fall.
When is rising a fault rather than trapped air?
After you have flooded the chamber, seated the flap, and emptied the basket, and it still climbs out. For the Velda, a UK review describes that climb as soon as the black collar is fitted. Talk to the retailer. If the goods are faulty, the 30-day right to reject in the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the consumer frame, once setup was done properly.
Does any of this apply to the Betta SE?
The flood-and-plug order does not. The listing says no assembly, and you empty the basket from the top. It has no mains lead, so the pond-pump RCD steps belong to the OASE and the Velda. The robot remains surface only, with the FAQ depth, salt, and chlorine limits.
