Pond skimmer vs pool skimmer

Updated: 16.10.2026

A search for one floating skimmer returns a 230 V pond pump and a 7.4 V solar pool robot. The water in front of you is a garden pond or a swimming pool, and the category name hides that split. By the end you should know which listing matches the water, and which limits stay on their own machine. Short roles are on the [best floating skimmer](/hub/pool-care/floating-skimmer/sub/floating-skimmer-best) page. Prices are on the [floating skimmer comparison](/hub/pool-care/floating-skimmer). Salt and depth figures below are listing claims, not a test we ran. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Same word, different machine

A pond skimmer, in the Swell UK and Cotswold Koi guides, is a pump on a float. In this set that is the OASE SwimSkim 25 at about £121.94 and the Velda Pond Skimmer Pro at about £109.99. Both are mains units with foam, a basket, and a stated area. Neither listing says it drives itself. A pool skimmer here is the Betta SE at about £402.42. The fields say solar, cordless, and 7.4 V. There is no flow in litres per hour and no stated area. The price gap is the product type. The Betta has no mains lead, so the pond RCD chapter does not belong on it. The type fork is the buying guide.

When it is a pond

If the water is a garden pond, stay with the mains floaters. OASE’s table says 25 m², 40 W, 230 V, and 2,500 litres per hour, and the unit adapts from 40 cm. A 50 m² line on the same pages contradicts that table. Velda’s bullets say up to 40 m², 3,000 litres per hour, and 43 W. On stated cover, the Velda is the larger pond. On UK review text, the OASE file is the long one. Either pond unit needs an RCD-protected supply. The Velda bullet says a mains plug is fitted, and a verified UK review says it was not. These units skim the surface and do not replace the filter. A paddling pool is not this case. The Betta does not give you a 230 V pump.

When it is a pool

If the water is a swimming pool and you want no lead across the paving, the Betta SE is the listing that says so. Assembly is listed as not required. The bullets describe a 200 micrometre basket, 30 hours or more, and a recharge of 5 to 6 hours in direct sun. The 4.4 from 7,943 is the listing line, not 7,943 UK reviews in the file. Bettabot’s FAQ says the SE cleans the surface, at a minimum of 12.7 cm, salt up to 5,000 ppm, and chlorine below 20 ppm. It does not clean the floor. A 30 litre field conflicts with the 30-hour bullet. Moving the robot onto a garden pond copies a pool FAQ onto water the listing does not size.

What you must not copy across

Salt, depth, and plugs stay on the listing that states them. The Betta FAQ’s 5,000 ppm and chlorine below 20 ppm are the ceiling for that robot, not a salt rating for the Velda. The Velda file does not answer salt. OASE’s 40 cm line is the pond unit. The Betta’s 12.7 cm is the robot. A shelf at 20 cm can meet one figure and miss the other. The plug clash belongs to the Velda and the OASE. The Betta states neither flow nor area. Within 25 m², buy the OASE. For a stated 40 m², and if you accept three UK reviews and the plug clash, buy the Velda. For a pool surface with no lead, buy the Betta and keep a floor cleaner. Flooding the pond unit is on the how to use page.

Common questions

Can the SwimSkim go in a chlorine pool?
The SwimSkim 25 listing is a 230 V pond skimmer with a 25 m² table, foam, and a 40 cm adaptation line. It does not state chlorine tolerance or a pool surface area. A chlorine pool is the Betta listing’s territory, inside the FAQ limits, rather than a place for a mains pond pump.
Can the Betta go in a koi pond?
The Betta SE is specified as a solar pool surface cleaner, with a 12.7 cm minimum and chemical limits in the brand FAQ. It has no stated pond area and no litres-per-hour flow. A koi pond is the OASE or Velda job. The robot’s star line does not add a pond specification.
What depth does each listing assume?
OASE’s table says the SwimSkim 25 adapts from 40 cm. Bettabot’s FAQ puts the Betta SE minimum at 12.7 cm. Those numbers belong to different machines. The Velda file in this research gives no matching minimum to copy, so leave that depth unstated.
Is a saltwater pool inside the Betta claim?
The Bettabot FAQ says salt up to 5,000 ppm and chlorine below 20 ppm. That is a brand FAQ, not a measurement from this comparison. A pool above those figures falls outside the claim. The Velda file has no answered salt rating, so a salt pool is not a reason to buy the pond pump.
What if I have both a pond and a paddling pool?
Treat them as two waters. The pond can take the OASE or the Velda if the cover figure and the RCD supply match. The paddling pool does not become a home for that 230 V pump because it is shallow. The Betta’s 12.7 cm line is the robot’s minimum, not a depth for the pond pump.
