Topside paint vs bilge paint: which white finish belongs where?

Updated: October 2026

You are standing beside a boat with a white hull outside, a stained locker inside and two highly rated tins that seem to promise the same thing. The practical answer to topside paint vs bilge paint is straightforward: use topside gloss on exposed hull and cabin sides above the waterline, and use bilge enamel in bilges, lockers and engine spaces. Our [white boat paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/white-boat-paint) puts the available coatings in context; this guide explains why swapping their jobs is usually a false economy. Neither type is antifouling, and neither is intended for permanent immersion.

What each paint is for

Topside paint is made for visible exterior surfaces above the waterline. International Toplac Plus is intended to leave a smooth decorative gloss and includes UV filters, so it suits hull and cabin sides that must retain their finish in sunlight. If you are preparing such a surface, the guide to applying white boat paint covers the sequence rather than the choice. Bilge paint is an interior working coating. International Danboline is specified for bilges, lockers and bulkheads, while Hempel Bilge & Locker is intended for bilges and lockers on glass fibre, wood and steel. These spaces collect dirt and may meet oil or fuel, so resistance and easy cleaning matter more than a yacht-like exterior gloss. Hempel describes its product for use above the waterline and explicitly excludes permanent immersion; Toplac Plus is likewise not an underwater coating.

What you gain and lose with each type

A topside gloss earns its place through appearance and weather exposure. Its UV-focused exterior specification matters when the boat spends a season outdoors. That does not make it better under an engine, where repeated contact with oil, fuel and dirty bilge water presents a different problem. Danboline names resistance to oil and fuel, and its practical coverage is about 11 m² per litre with one or two coats according to the manufacturer’s datasheet. Hempel gives a similar figure for Bilge & Locker. Bilge enamel therefore wins when you need a washable white interior finish. Topside gloss can be wiped clean, but its sheet does not give the same oil-and-fuel role as Danboline.

What the listings and datasheets disagree about

Marketplace extracts confirm the tin on sale, but abbreviated attributes can conflict with manufacturer information. The amazon.co.uk extract for Danboline describes “Bianco 750” and calls the finish matte, whereas the 31 July 2023 Danboline datasheet says gloss and includes a white colour code. “Bianco” means white, but the evidence does not prove that the marketplace variant is the sheet’s YMA102 White. Check the tin code and current technical sheet before matching an existing finish. Hempel presents a similar caution. One marketplace field may say steel only, while Hempel’s UK page lists glass fibre, wood and steel. The manufacturer calls the coating semi-gloss and gives a touch-dry time of about three hours at 20°C. That is not a promise that it is ready for recoating, fuel exposure or service after three hours; follow current curing instructions for your conditions. UK comments naming bilges, an anchor locker and an engine bay support Danboline’s intended role, not an exterior claim.

When to choose topside paint or bilge paint

Choose topside paint for an exposed hull or cabin side above the waterline when your priorities are decorative gloss, colour retention and weather exposure. Choose bilge enamel for a bilge, locker, bulkhead or engine space when you need a light, cleanable coating whose specification addresses oil and fuel. In plain terms, Toplac Plus belongs outside where it can be seen; Danboline or Hempel Bilge & Locker belongs in the hard-working interior spaces named on the tin. If the surface remains underwater, pause and select an immersion-rated system instead.

Common questions

Can I paint the topsides with Danboline?
Danboline is specified for bilges, lockers and bulkheads, not as a UV-filtered topside finish. It may be white and glossy according to the datasheet, but that does not establish exterior colour retention. Use a named topside coating above the waterline unless current manufacturer guidance explicitly approves your proposed use.
Can I paint the bilge with Toplac Plus?
Toplac Plus is a topside finish, so using it in a bilge gives up the clearer oil-and-fuel case made for Danboline. A sound coat may look glossy, but location-specific performance matters more than appearance in an engine space. Choose a compatible bilge enamel for a bilge.
Is bilge paint waterproof enough to live underwater?
No. Hempel Bilge & Locker is described for above the waterline and not for permanent immersion, while Danboline is not antifouling. Occasional bilge moisture differs from continuous exterior immersion. Use a system specified for the submerged hull, with suitable primer and antifouling where required.
Why can bilge paint have better marketplace stars?
Ratings reflect the product and job reviewed, not a technical test across coating classes. Owners may rate Danboline highly because it brightened a locker or engine bay. That does not show that it will retain a better exterior finish than topside paint in sunlight.
Is gloss or semi-gloss better in a locker?
Both can work if the product is specified for the locker. Gloss may make grime easier to see and wipe, while semi-gloss can be less unforgiving on rough interior laminates. Compatibility, preparation and oil or fuel resistance should decide the product before sheen.
Does a bilge need primer before painting?
It depends on the substrate, its condition and the existing coating. Bare steel, timber, GRP and sound one-pack paint do not share one preparation route. Follow the current product sheet, remove contamination and use the specified primer or moisture-protection system rather than assuming enamel seals everything.
Is Danboline Bianco the same as datasheet white YMA102?
The marketplace extract says “Bianco 750”, while the datasheet lists a white code, but that does not prove they are identical. Colour names, pack variants and listing attributes can differ. Confirm the manufacturer code on the tin or with the seller if matching matters.
