How to paint a boat white: a practical topside sequence

Updated: October 2026

You have a dry weekend, a tin of one-pack enamel and a hull that looks ready, but good white gloss depends more on preparation and timing than on loading the roller. This guide explains how to paint a boat white above the waterline, from degreasing and sanding to the final coat and safe disposal. It is for sound GRP or previously painted topsides, not antifouling, bilges or textured decks. If you have not yet confirmed that your tin suits the surface, start with our [white boat paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/white-boat-paint). Otherwise, use the product data sheet as the final authority: application methods, primers and overcoating times differ even between reputable one-pack enamels.

Before the tin is opened

Begin by checking the existing coating rather than painting over an unknown problem. Wash off salt and dirt, then degrease with the cleaner specified by the paint maker; sanding a greasy hull can drive contamination into the surface. Remove loose or flaking material, abrade sound paint evenly and clear the dust with a vacuum and suitable tack rag. Our white boat paint buying guide helps distinguish topside enamel from bilge and deck products if the label in your hand is ambiguous.

Apply thin coats with the specified tools

Stir the paint thoroughly without whipping air into it, decant a working amount into a clean tray and keep the main tin covered. Work in manageable sections and maintain a wet edge. One person can roll a thin, even film while another tips it off where the product permits. A heavy coat is more likely to sag, skin over or remain soft underneath. Toplac Plus and Hempel Brilliant Gloss both specify two or three coats, although Hempel also calls for sanding between coats. Only thin when the data sheet allows it, and measure rather than guess. International’s Toplac Plus sheet specifies Thinner No. 100 at about 10%, with a further 5% in temperatures above 25°C. Hempel limits thinner to about 5% for Brilliant Gloss. These figures are not interchangeable.

Work inside the weather and recoat window

Choose a stable, dry period that covers preparation, painting and curing, not merely the hour when the roller is moving. Toplac Plus should not be applied below 5°C, while experienced UK boat painters often find roughly 15–20°C easier for flow and levelling. Hempel requires the surface to be at least 3°C above the dew point and relative humidity below 85%. A hull can be colder than the surrounding air, so measure the surface and conditions rather than relying only on a phone forecast. At 15°C, the Toplac Plus data sheet gives about three hours to touch dry and a recoat interval from 16 hours to three days; at 25°C it gives about two hours to touch dry and eight hours to two days. Those figures do not support an online listing that claims a one-hour full cure. If you exceed the maximum interval, abrade as directed before recoating.

Clean up safely and know when to stop

Keep solvent-soaked cloths and used thinner in closed, labelled containers away from heat and ignition sources. Do not pour paint, white spirit or washings into a drain, onto the ground or into the marina. Recycle Now advises checking local arrangements, so ask your council’s household waste recycling centre what it accepts. One-pack topside enamel is for above-waterline use and is not a substitute for an immersed coating.

Common questions

Do I tip off Toplac Plus?
International’s Toplac Plus guidance allows application by high-density foam roller without tipping. That does not apply automatically to older Toplac formulations or another maker’s enamel. Read the exact label and current UK data sheet for your tin; if it specifies roll and tip, use a second person and a suitable brush to level each freshly rolled section.
How many coats of white topside paint do I need?
Toplac Plus and Hempel Brilliant Gloss both specify two or three coats in the cited product guidance. The correct number still depends on the prepared substrate, undercoat and colour change. Apply the stated film build through several thin coats rather than trying to achieve full hiding with one heavy layer.
What temperature is too cold for boat paint?
Toplac Plus should not be applied below 5°C, but that is a minimum rather than a promise of easy application. A moderate, stable day around 15–20°C is generally more manageable. You must also keep the surface above the dew point and obey the humidity limit stated for your enamel.
Why did the gloss go flat overnight?
The usual suspect is condensation landing before the enamel had set, especially when painting continued late in the day. A cold hull can reach the dew point even while the air feels mild. Excess thinner, a damp surface or applying outside the specified temperature range can also reduce gloss, so diagnose the conditions before recoating.
What if I miss the maximum recoat window?
Do not simply add another coat after the maximum interval. Let the existing layer cure, then abrade it using the grade and method in the manufacturer’s instructions, remove all dust and recoat in suitable conditions. Sanding restores a mechanical key, but it cannot correct an incompatible or poorly adhered base coat.
Can I spray topside paint in my driveway?
Brush or roller application is normally more controllable for a DIY one-pack job. Spraying creates drifting paint and solvent vapour that are difficult to contain near homes, cars and drains. Two-pack polyurethane can involve particularly serious respiratory hazards, so leave sprayed systems to a properly equipped professional facility.
Where should leftover thinner and paint go?
Keep leftovers in their original or clearly labelled sealed containers and never pour them into drains or onto the ground. Ask your local council or household waste recycling centre whether it accepts solvent-based paint and thinner, as arrangements vary. Keep contaminated cloths contained and away from ignition sources while awaiting disposal.
