Non-slip deck paint for a boat: choosing the right white coating

Updated: October 2026

A wet cockpit sole or side deck can become slippery long before the rest of your white finish looks tired. If you are searching for non slip deck paint for a boat, the key decision is not simply which white looks brightest: it is whether the dried coating provides deliberate texture underfoot. A marine deck coating is different from smooth hull gloss, bilge enamel and household decking stain. Our [white boat paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/white-boat-paint) keeps those jobs separate; this guide focuses only on walk-on areas above the waterline. By the end, you should know when Hempel's ready-mixed coating makes sense and when a manufacturer-approved non-slip additive gives you more control.

What Hempel's non-slip deck coating is

Hempel Non-Slip Deck Coating 56251 is a white, semi-gloss acrylic coating with fine granules already mixed into the paint. Hempel specifies it for glass fibre, wood and steel above the waterline, so it suits areas such as cockpit soles and side decks rather than the submerged hull. The 750 ml amazon.co.uk listing reviewed for this page was about £34.60 and explicitly described the product as for marine use, not household decking. The manufacturer's stated theoretical coverage is about 9.2 m² per litre, and the product data sheet calls for two or three coats. If you are still separating deck, topside and bilge products, use the white boat paint buying guide before ordering.

What the UK reviews can and cannot tell you

The amazon.co.uk extract showed 4.6 stars from 29 ratings, but that score does not measure slip resistance. Some UK reviewers liked the grip, while another thought the texture was not gritty enough. There is no quoted ramp test or measured slip-resistance result in the available evidence, so it would be wrong to call the coating the safest option. One reviewer expected a colourless product and used it on paving slabs. That is a category error: this is a white marine coating, not a clear patio treatment.

Built-in granules or non-slip pearls in a topcoat

A ready-mixed deck coating gives you a repeatable starting point because the granules are already dispersed in the paint. You still need to stir thoroughly and keep the material mixed while working, but you are not choosing an aggregate dose yourself. The alternative is a non-slip additive approved for the chosen topcoat. Hempel pearls are sold for stirring into compatible products such as Multicoat or Brilliant Gloss; UK retailer guidance commonly gives about 50 g per 750 ml, but you should follow the current instructions for the exact paint and additive rather than treating that as a universal recipe. Do not add random sand or an unspecified powder to the Hempel 56251 tin. It already contains granules, and an improvised addition can alter application, adhesion and cleanability.

Application limits that affect the result

Preparation and weather matter as much as the granules. The substrate should be clean, dry and properly prepared for the material underneath; Hempel's data sheet says wood moisture should not exceed 16%. The surface should also remain at least 3°C above the dew point. Drying figures vary between sources: the UK listing gives about one hour, Hempel's product information says touch dry at about two hours at 20°C, and the listing gives three days for full cure. Treat those as different milestones, not a promise that the deck is ready for hard foot traffic after one hour. Stir from the bottom before and during use so the fine aggregate does not settle, and do not allow petrol, diesel, oil or acetone to pool on the cured film.

Common questions

Can I use this tin on a household deck?
No. The amazon.co.uk title identifies it as a marine-use product and excludes household decking. Timber patios face a different substrate, movement and maintenance regime, and one review describing use on paving does not change the intended application. Choose a product specified for your domestic deck instead.
Can I use it as white hull gloss?
Not as a substitute for a smooth topside finish. Its fine granules are intended to create texture on walk-on surfaces above the waterline. Use the correct hull or topside coating for smooth vertical areas, and keep this product for prepared deck sections where grip is required.
Why might the finish still feel too smooth?
The granules are deliberately fine, so the result may feel less aggressive than a coarse aggregate or peaked acrylic coating. Stirring, coat thickness, wear and the underlying texture also affect the result. Because no measured slip test is available here, judge the cured finish cautiously before relying on it in routinely wet areas.
Should I add pearls to gloss instead?
Use pearls when the paint manufacturer explicitly approves that combination and you want to control the texture. A ready-mixed coating is easier to specify consistently; an additive route can provide flexibility but demands careful dosing and distribution. Do not sprinkle an unknown material into ordinary gloss and assume adhesion will remain unchanged.
How many coats do I need?
Hempel's product data sheet specifies two or three coats. Its theoretical coverage is about 9.2 m²/L per coat, so 750 ml equates to roughly 6.9 m² for one ideal coat. Allow more paint for multiple coats, porous surfaces, textured areas and normal application losses.
Can fuel or solvent sit on the cured coating?
No. Technical guidance says petrol, diesel, oil and acetone should not be allowed to pool on the film. Clean spills promptly using a method compatible with the coating. If the area regularly receives fuel, confirm the complete coating system with Hempel or a marine paint specialist before application.
Which primer should I use?
The correct primer depends on whether the deck is glass fibre, wood or steel and on the existing coating's condition. There is no single primer answer for every deck in the evidence reviewed. Follow Hempel's current system specification for your substrate, or ask a marine paint supplier when the old coating is unknown.
